  • Is your single speed chain popping off? Today I'm showing you how I find the perfect chain line for a singlespeed bicycle. I've used this method on cross bikes AND mountain bikes. Today I'll demo this method on my circa 2010 Niner One-9 scandium frame for ya.

    Technically speaking the 'spacer' you're referring to is a locknut and the 'hub spacing' is actually the OLD (outer locknut dimension) but good video other than that

    You may know better than myself but I would suggest looking at gusset singlespeed cogs in your specified tooth amount as they are wider at the hub which will stop any sort of 'notching' in the hub, I had a 16 tooth dmr conversion kit witch the cog was the same width as yours and new I was going to have problems, swapped the cog and a spacer out for the gusset cog and the engagement feels so much better and it's not going to damage the hub as quickly :)

    So helpful, thanks a ton for this! I am getting a "clunk" sound every few pedal strikes and I suspect that it has to do with the chainline? Sometimes the sound is so loud that I am afraid that my chain is going to snap.

      I keep getting this ‘clunk’ sounds and the chain would ‘slip’ from the chainring a lot as well

    Another yinzer here! While riding my sons single speed bike this morning I was hearing a knocking noise coming from the rear wheel. I took it out to a bike shop and the mechanic said I could try another freewheel but it may not help. Have you ever tried the White Industries Eno freewheel? They're about $100 and I wanted to make sure it will solve the problem before I order it.

      I have never tried one, but the white industries stuff is usually bullet proof!

    great. thanks for sharing. look, i have a 7s cassette on a trainer with a 4,5mm spacer requried to fit the cassette. im getting grinding/noise on the chainring because its not perfectly aligned with the smalles cog on the cassette. i dont even need to measure as there is no room to play with the cassete, becuase if i remove 0,5mm spacer, it wont sit tight on the hub. my question wil be: its possible to add a shim on the crank in order to allign with the small cog? or this would mess the shifting to the other gears? thanks

      Hi thanks! This particular bike has an eccentric bottom bracket so you adjust your tension there.

    Thanks for this. The best video I have seen this far on the subject. RUclips is loaded with dumbasses explaining BMX chainlines. Frustrating because their approaches are unscientific.

    You seem like the guy to ask about this! Would you just use a standard narrow wide chain for a single speed conversion and do you get length of the chain? Thanks! Appreciate the video!

    • @Ryan-pn1mc
      @Ryan-pn1mc 2 года назад +1

      Yo! Yes check your sprocket width, but my go-to chain is a PC-971 (sram 9speed $21)

    • @Ryan-pn1mc

      You can buy/borrow a chain tool and cut to length.

    Pittsburgh? Also, great video really good explanation! Thank you! Working with a freewheel on a track hub though, any tips? Not sure how I could use a spacer in that situation. Oh, and whats the cool drawing pad?

    • @dumpsteronwheels8831
      @dumpsteronwheels8831  4 года назад

      Good catch! Very close to Pittsburgh yes. The pad is a boogie board similar to this: www.amazon.com/Boogie-Board-Writing-Drawing-eWriter/dp/B010HWCEFY Can you maybe fit a 10 speed spacer in there? Some that have the axle nuts you can move them but then should re-dish the wheel.

    There should be another video upfront which shows how to check the alignment of the frame. If the frame is not straight all of this alignment makes no sense.

    • @dumpsteronwheels8831
      @dumpsteronwheels8831  3 года назад +1

      I never messed with freewheels much, just on a bmx. But since they thread on you’ll need to make chain-line adjustments at your crank or possibly re-dish your wheel.
