  • I didn’t waste time finding a new project. I had an 80-series Land Cruiser years back and its time for another. This this is rough but solid. I think. Haven’t actually driven it yet.

The 80 series is one of the best land cruisers ever. They are modern enough to have some great features but old enough to be simple and reliable and they are good looking too

I dare to say 100 series is still good, because they don't have a lot of modern features.

Most fun offroad I've ever had is our 90's something FJ80. Somene gave it to me cause it was dead, replaced fuel pump, bolted bald 37's on it (no other mods) and commenced to destroy offroad parks from Texas to Tennessee. We named it the Tickler, you could hear that belt squealing with delight a mile away.
200k miles, open/open, bald 37's, greatest time of our lives. A friend of yours was inspired by it and got him one after riding in ours. Hope you get it running, it's a blast.

I bought a 91 in similar condition. I put a 6.5 diesel in it, locked full float axle in the rear, and an Eaton e-locker in the front. It's pretty mean now on 35's getting about 20mpg. I love it!

I have a 94 FZJ80. Currently have the issue where it’s not sending power to the starter through the ignition. I’ve rebuilt the starter and that helped but issue returned so next plan is to do the Ford starter relay mod.
The 94 also has the 442 transmission which they refer as a bus transmission. I was under the impression that it’s a heavier duty transmission than the later one but the later one gets a little better fuel mileage. 96/97’s.
94 is still OBD1 which sure isn’t as good as OBD2 on the 96/97’s.
Need to do this fuel pump replacement and I look forward to your videos on this vehicle. You really go into great detail which is very helpful for us that want to perform that same repair.
Great video. Subscribed today because of these videos I just found on your channel.
    Thanks
    Bryan from Richardson, TX

In Australia - I have a 91 series 80 diesel (105 series 5 speed auto - go figure!). I love it to bits and will never get rid of it. Like all things, they have their good and bad points, but the fact is that they are one of the last of the truly field fixable 4B's and a great platform from which to mod.

Terrain Tamer in Australia does alot of parts for these, no nonsense stuff that in alot of cases comes from Toyota suppliers.
I'd do this as a simple, tough all rounder. Get the 3FZE back up and running, probably needs a precautionary rebuild that many miles, rebuild the auto for the same reason. You can do a part time conversion on the T-case if fuel milage is a concern, guy I work with has done the part time conversion and reckons it's worth it. Iirc you can regear the t-case as well. I'd put ARB lockers in the axles, decent suspension and good tyres and it'll go most places, limitation would be it's size and how much body damage you tolerate. Run ARB bullbar, sidrails and rear bumper they'll reduce the chances of body damage, and gets the spare from under the rear where they usually get torn off.

Sold my 93 when I moved to the west coast from the midwest. I regret selling that truck all the time and my gf and I are going to look for another when we settle down. The midwest took its toll bad on the thing; rear doors were rusted through, quarters rusted through, rear harness was rotted to the point I chopped and rebuilt most of it, and it got horrific gas mileage. That all being said, I have never driven a vehicle that I enjoyed more. That awd in the midwest snow made it unstoppable, like I could not get it stuck within reason. I fixed a million little things on the truck, but it never stranded me like my other vehicles would, everything would break slowly enough to get in front of.
Would love to see a 4wd 24/7 type build where you could show how far mild mods could take you with it and build more of a story arc with this vehicle rather than the pump and dump over the top builds.

Hello from Ontario Canada, Fred! Love the new Cruiser! Here in the salty North, that non-running machine would likely be worth somewhere north of $12,000 Canucky bucks. Not kidding, rotted out piles with 250 plus miles on them run $10,000. I hope you keep it, rather than wish you'd kept it later down the road. As for what to do with it, all I can say is that I'd watch the crap out of some short videos of you guys getting it running, mod it some, and then park it long enough for me to win the lottery, drive down there and throw cash at you until I could drive it back home. Nice machine, man. Love the shows you do, love the dogs too! Oh, also, if there's ANY risk of black widows, I'd take off and nuke the site from orbit. (Bug bombs!) It's the only way to be sure. 😀

My daily for 17 years has been a 1993 locker fzj80, the only thing I wish was different was diesel power because the gas mileage really sucks, 80’s are so overbuilt from the motor to the bus transmission, just have the interior steam cleaned you will be amazed how good those cloth seats will clean up. Good luck a cheep cruiser can get real expensive fast…

the 93-97 FZJ80''s are the best..... you get full floater rear axle, way oversized transmission that rarely breaks, big gear drive transfer case, the front birf's are at least 1/3 bigger than those found in the mini-truck solid axle, factory lockers available, front diff is a high-pinion, even when lifted the coil spring suspension rides smooth (depending on who's shocks you go with) the engine is fairly bullet proof. the downside: parts can be expensive and are getting harder to find depending on what you need, and lifting them correctly with caster correction and rear adjustable links is expensive and few "4wd" shops know how to actually properly adjust those links, fuel mileage isn't that great.
