I love this album! It's actually punk rock.... just a few years from The Damned and the Pistols and many others with "limited" singing ability just getting out there and doing it! That's Rock and roll! The version of The Kids are Alright is amazing! Keith was one of a kind!
This is why I love YT. I'm in the middle of finding out about Keith Moon and reading about his antics and I can listen to his album in seconds. It's actually not as bad as I expected it to be. It's fine.
Why the fuck is this album not on any official streaming services? It's not the greatest album of all time, that's for sure, but I think it definitely deserves more publicity. It was always underrated.
WOW! Seriously? A Master Piece? I love Keith Moon. But youre not being honest. Youre fumbling for something positive. "It's his heart" No it is the booze.... and this album is trash. RIP Keith. You're an icon drummer and we loved you despite your flaws. And I can relate to flaws. We're the same in that regard.
The love of and humor of rock n roll all on one delightful LP. The critics hated it so you KNOW it is GREAT!!!! KEITH MOON WAS A FORCE OF NATURE with a good side and a bad one... 2 Sides of the Moon! It's a number one!!! A Keith MOON solo lp. Thanks to all for recording, for posting, for remembering, etc. He's on his way..... He's solid gold!
What makes this sole solo album of Keith Moon's is that it serves as both a musical and comedy album rolled into one! Rest In Peace, Keith. We love you. No doubt you are rocking another world where you are right now.
For years, I’ve struggled to think of what this reminds me of... the tracks are almost too slick in their production, while Keith’s vocals have a ridiculous amount of reverb and sit way far back in the mix. It just dawned on me - duh, it sounds like he’s singing drunk karaoke to all of his favorite songs. Which, honestly, is kind of what he’s doing here. Love him for it anyway.
You just said it! It was just a mount of songs that he love to sing and, simply as that he record what seems to be a bunch of drunk compilation songs to sing to...
Yeah. The production is literally, "lavish". Had it been more crude and much rougher, I think we'd have a wonderful collection here. It reminds me of Las Vegas in the 60's and 70's for whatever reason.
well good point - I am not mad at him for it. we're all allowed to make as many crap records as we want no matter who we are - I just don't see why people thing this is "good"
I feel the same about it too. When I bought the album when it came out this song made me sad. Keith surely had two sides. Let's remember the positive ones. I am so glad I got to see him play many times.
I was in a band that worked with the producer of this album and he told us some insane stories about what it was like to work with Keith. The story that I remember most was one day while trying to get the vocal down for Don't Worry Baby, Keith liked to do his vocals with the lights off and he was frustrated with his performance and was drunk. Then things got strangely quiet for a few seconds... suddenly, a champagne bottle came flying through the huge studio glass window...session over
Put in context, it's not nearly the disaster it's always written up to be. He's clearly no singer, never was. You can hear the emphasis on the female backup singers and the de-emphasis by adding reverb to his voice. Compared to the utterly horrendous musical landscape today, this would be a classic.
I have just read a biography of Keith entitled Dear Boy. A fantastic read. The author says that when the Who performed live, Keith's microphone was usually switched off as the other band members couldn't stand his singing.
Can I get this album? There is something to be said here. We are not talking about Paul, we are talking about Keith. He hits the notes, and where he was at the time, fuck its part of rock history. You can hear his struggle, his effort, his passion. He was a little boy. He accomplished a lot. I bet its like roaches. After nuclear war....roaches and this album with still be here. Someone in the far future will find it, and Keith will be king. Hell, there is even Ringo giving his effort.
Although he didn't intend it that way, he DOES have a "punky" or "young, loud and snotty" ambiance to his voice. One can argue over his vocal quality, but, hey - it's f***ing Keith Moon! Anything we're fortunate enough to see, hear or smell that he left behind is priceless! (I AM noticing that if he played his own drums on "Crazy Like a Fox," it was one of his most restrained recording efforts!)
Keith sounds as good as Daltrey! Most people don't know this but The Who song "Bucket T" with Keith singing lead was released as a single in Sweden and went to #1! He remains my favorite R&R personality, and certainly "the greatest drummer who has ever lived"! His version of "The Kids Are Alright" is as energetic as The Who's original version and just as good! And, I think that is Daltrey's best lead vocal! I've seen the original band in concert in 1968 and 1971! You really had to be alive then to appreciate how truly great Keith was! If not for Keith The Who would have 'never' made it!
i really dont know why this album is smashed to smithereens by the critics. its at worst a pretty solid one. produced with no flaws, great studio muscians, song amterial is even funny. you have to get moons voice as what it is here, an eclectical comedic event. Did he sing “ Don’t Worry Baby” - that’s terrific- just missing a producer’s blend ( the back up girls are a tad quirky for the time ; campy or kitschy)
I know his vocals are very limited, but its produced so slick that he comes out sounding like a singer ,, and thats what he really wanted to be wasnt it lol !!

Though the album is far from a masterpiece, it's far better than I expected and it's fine for a "novelty album. It's actually better than some of the solo efforts from his contemporaries, Entwistle, Ringo, Harrison, Jagger etc.

Surprisingly well produced. I came here expecting complete awfulness, but this is highly professional. Moon can't sing the slow numbers, but in the rock numbers he's fine.
Just got done reading Who I Am, Pete Townsends autobiography and he made it sound like this album was garbage. I was listening to Pete's albums Empty Glass and All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes and I would rather listen to Keith's any day.
In fact, Keith Moon did record a second solo album that was never properly finished and remained unreleased until "Two Sides of the Moon" was released as a double CD. He also recorded his vocales on a version of the Beatles "When I am 64" that was included on the "All This and World War II" album. A fantastic album of Beatle covers by Peter Gabriel, Ambrosia, Bee Gees, Elton John and many more. Keith Moon also did lead vocals on some songs recorded by The Who such as "Buckett T", ""Jaguar", "I Need You", "Wasp Man", "Fiddle About" (on the Tommy Soundtrack), Girls Eyes and some said "Armenia City in the Skies" . I think the Producer is to blame that he did not pushed Keith Moon to reach new limits.
Good thing, Brian Wilson doesn't take a ringside seat in every Tom, Dick, Harry and Sally's shower: We ALL sound like this. AND we all bought Beach Boy albums.

he should have at least told him the truth then being that he worked with the two best song writers in pop history that every lived - doesn't any have guts any more - shame on Ringo for not speaking up when he could have
Love The Who, Love Keith Moon in The Who, but even though this album has it's few moments, it's not what anyone wanted back in the day and it's still not very appealing. Well, it's all we've got of solo Keith so, maybe once a year on his birthday. We lift a pint to ya!

But he sings that whole "Some nights I still sleep on the beach" interlude in Bellboy, and that sounds pretty good.
"Don't Worry Baby" sounds more like a Syd Barrett vocal.
+BrokenHalo5 LOL i was thinking the same thing!!! Syd Barrett does the Beach Boys lol
And the Great Ringo Starr is on the album !!
he should have at least told him the truth then being that he worked with the two best song writers in pop history that every lived - doesn't any have guts any more - shame on Ringo for not speaking up when he could have
thanks
Love this!!!!
The first track sounds like Mott the Hoople
Thxx for postin "Don't worry baby" what a dude...
YIKES!!!😳
Love The Who, Love Keith Moon in The Who, but even though this album has it's few moments, it's not what anyone wanted back in the day and it's still not very appealing. Well, it's all we've got of solo Keith so, maybe once a year on his birthday. We lift a pint to ya!
