I complimented a woman's outfit the other morning. Early morning out shopping before 7 AM with my husband, and she was behind us at the register. She was wearing this special knitted jacket with a pattern I remembered this old lady had made a blanket with in my childhood, and it was just so well made. I asked her if she had made it herself and she had, so I told her I thought it looked amazing. She got really happy which made me happy. It was also a huge step for me to do this because I suffer from anxiety but that homemade jacket/blanket was just stunning. I had to tell her.

Advice that has never failed me: if someone compliments you, just smile and say thank you.
I used to have a really bad habit of trying to essentially argue why the compliment isn’t true (e.g. no, my hair looks awful today; yeah it’s cute, but I don’t like how this top looks on me, etc). It was really just a reflex from self esteem issues and the deeply ingrained habit of talking down to myself.
One day, I did that to the wrong person. There was a sweet, older lady in the checkout line with me. I don’t remember exactly what the compliment was, but when I tried to fight it, she put her hand up to shush me and said, “Oh no no no. When someone says something nice about you, just smile and say thank you. Then I say that you’re welcome, and we both have a nice day.” Her tone was very kind but firm. Thank you, random sweet lady from a decade ago for setting me straight!! 💜

To me, there is a BIG difference between "influencer" and "Content Creator" . Content Creators are people who have some sort of talent, skill, wisdom, or expertise to share with an audience. These people gain followers by offering something of value, and usually they begin offering that something out of sheer love of doing it.
"influencers" offer nothing. They are walking commercials. They are the "popular kids" from school still trying to feed off of our collective trauma of being excluded BY THEM and their ilk in the first place. They exist purely to feed their own vanity, they will ditch even their " besties" if they don't fit the aesthetic they are looking for.

If I see someone taking photos like that, I try to stop and tell them that they look beautiful/handsome or compliment them on something.

I'm an introvert, and my 15 yr old daughter is an extravert...massive sunshine-y people energy, this girl. Through her example, I have learned the power of giving compliments. First, you actually have to be aware of other people (😂). Second, you have to see/read the details. It's not just saying something general, like "oh you look so pretty," it's spotting the thing you can tell they like, like "omg, your nails and that outfit totally vibe," or "that purse is rad." People like compliments, but when it's specific, they light up like an arena. It's fun!!

Surprisingly, we saw the newly-married couple at brunch the following morning and they invited us to sit and have coffee. We were there for our 30th ann. but mostly talked about their story. She went through the line before the concert and asked everyone if they had a little message for madison (She made 2 tour Videos after each leg, so one for NA and one for Europe). After the show I was about to leave and someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around and it was her Assistent who asked me to show her my nails. im a guy and I love nail polish so I made my nails spell out " ♡Life Supp♡" (her album title shortned to fit my nails). Her assistant took a picture of them and told me to wait there for a sec. I told her that I loved her jacket and it was beautiful. She then told me that her best friend made it for her, who had just recently passed away a few months ago. She said she liked having a piece of her best friend to carry around with her, and that it meant so much to her that I complimented it. About the strangers taking pictures thing: My friend group and I went to Bratislava not too long ago and asked an elderly gentleman to take our picture (one, because he was the first person to cross our drunken path and two, because we figured an elder would be least likely to steal our phone). This sweet man took about ten pictures of us (we were ten people). Seven of those pictures were basically just his thumb. Two were half his thumb, half us and one was actually half decent (that's the one literally every single one of us posted - our mutuals were quite annoyed to say the least). We didn't complain though because he seemed so, so proud of the "great" job he did and I really do cherish that memory regardless of how aesthetic our pictures turned out to be. Many years ago, about 1980, I was the one who was embarrassed because I had no idea who a famous person was.
I was on a date at Benihana's, a nice Japanese restaurant. The way the tables were set up, there were basically two tables per "room" (rice paper partitions). My date and I were at one table, and the other table was occupied by a very handsome man, dining alone. Several people came in, interrupting him, asking for his autograph. I asked my date if he knew who the guy was, he didn't have a clue either. I guess we weren't discussing our ignorance quietly enough, because the handsome guy said something like, "You don't watch TV much, do you?"
I was embarrassed but apologized, and we admitted that we know he's famous but we really don't watch much TV. He smiled and gave us each his autograph, which we both looked at, blankly.
He had lovely penmanship but the name "Robert Fuller" still didn't ring a bell.
He had starring roles in the 1960s western series "Laramie", and "Wagon Train" and had recently starred in the popular TV show, "Emergency", along with appearing in lots of movies but apparently neither of us had seen any of those roles. He was very nice and I think he was amused that we didn't recognize him. That probably didn't happen often.
Today, that would be about the equivalent of not recognizing a Hemsworth brother! Robert Fuller was smoking hot. When I told my mom about it later, her reaction was pretty much, "WTH is wrong with you? How could you NOT know who Robert Fuller is?"

@@LazyIRanch I personally think it's not embarrassing to not recognize a celebrity. No matter how famous they are, they are still human beings, it's impossible for every still human to know them. Michelle's story reminded me of an instance with an actual "celebrity" I once had.
I was in a beach bar/restaurant on a Caribbean island. I'd been on the island for about 6 weeks at this point, and I frequented this bar on a daily basis because the owner was the son of my landlady, and they had free wifi. I was happily ensconced in my favourite corner, doing emails and FB on my phone whilst enjoying the sound of the waves washing up on the beach. As you do.
Said "celebrity" and her entourage entered. I'll not name her, she was lovely about the incident, but one of her crew made a beeline for me. "NO PHOTOS!" he barked. I wasn't taking pics, and said so. "PUT. YOUR PHONE. AWAY!" he said loudly from about an inch from my face. No. I'm minding my own business, and care little for celebrity. Especially ones from a different continent to me, and whose chatshow I never watch because it isn't a thing where I'm from. "Put the phone away, or there will be trouble!" they hissed at me, still far too much in my face. This was the point I stood up, towering over the precocious little worm, and said "Fine. Here or on the beach?". Luckily for all parties, this was the point his boss called him off. She also sent a beer over to me as an apology.
In my experience, actual celebrities seem to be much nicer than "influencers".

I feel so comfortable complementing people in general. I love to call elderly men handsome and hottie. Just because if they die today and nobody ever made them feel beautiful, I hope i did. I call eldely ladies interesting, intelligent and wise. It maks them feel loved and appreciated. I also tell all of my friends that I love them every time I say good bye. I say "I missed you" if I have not seen them in over 4 days and hug them. Yes, I have been called a brown nose. But I can care less and say "You know I am not white. Right?" The sour pickles die inside, and thats ok. 😂😅Nothing can please them, ever (not even nagging & complaining).
I don't suffer from embarrassment, first nor second hand. I don't believe that people pay that much attention to me that they look at my every move or flaw. I'm not pretty nor beautiful like Tyra Banks, Alicia Machado, Taylor Swift, Shakira, I know that only I care if my eyeliner is even. I can speak in public without fear because I know it does not threaten my life. I just do me.
