In the early 1990s I found volumes 3 to 18, minus one, of the Strand Magazine in a second-hand book shop in Edinburgh, with the original blue pictorial bindings. It was a shame that it was three volumes short of a complete run, but I forked out £140 for them and was quite pleased (when the shock of parting with so much money had subsided). The next time I was in Edinburgh I went into another second-hand bookshop and found the missing three volumes! Serendipity? (which I once read defined as "looking for a needle in a haystack and finding the farmer's daughter"!).
As a lifelong fan of Holmes I found today’s episode to be an absolute pleasure . Your episodes when you break out a pipe are always my favourites Malcolm but combined with Conan Doyle and it’s a 10 from me .
What a joy! I have read them many a times but will admit to being a fan of the audiobooks by Stephen Fry. If perchance you feel the desire you may be his equal. Next on my list is a study/library in which I am permitted to smoke! I do so enjoy and agree your comments about the original context of the publishing though. I am a foodie and have amassed a good library and in the older books all the advertisements and oddments really do get you in the mood of the time. Even better if you have peoples anecdotes and paper clippings etc etc.
Thank you, Malcolm, for sharing Conan Doyal. I love the original Strand stories. I've read all of them, I think. The Sidney Padget illustrations are what made the Strand stories. Of course, Conan Doyals' descriptions are excellent, but Padget's art is what brought the characters to life and why we know what 221B Baker St. looks like when it's been recreated in film or in plays. That's why the hawkish features of Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, and Benedict Cumberbatch look like Holmes is because of Padget.
Sometimes when my baby boy (whose middle name is Arthur by the way after Conan Doyle) has a particularly messy diaper, I joke that it is a three wipe problem. Nobody gets it but it makes me laugh.
I’ve only recently discovered your channel, and just today noticed it has only 23k subscribers. While happy for myself, I’m sad for everyone who hasn’t discovered it yet.
Wow. It was interesting learning about Strand magazine. To think that magazines used to be a work of substance! Having grown up in the 90s and 2000s magazines have been worthless. Certainly not art in my opinion..but when I see and learn about strand and another, which Dostoevsky wrote for, it transports me to a different time a different world
The Peterson Sherlock Holmes original is a fine pipe and one of my favourites too. How appropriate to smoke it whilst reading from that binding of the Strand Periodical.
As I watch this video I was taking a break between scenes while watching Jeremy Brett as Holmes in The Bruce Partington Plans!!! Lovely post once again Malcolm. Thank you Sir.
That is Amazing so hard to get and worth so much . What a treasure to have . I am a huge Sherlock Holmes Fan . What a piece of history Perfect !!!! Thank you for sharing this Timeless Treasure! I collect autographs of Sherlock and have Sir Arthur C Doyle s signature. Your Channel is the best. I enjoy your Stories a pipe and a Sherlock Story can’t go wrong ! I would love to have a Autograph from you Sir on one of your Books . That would be a Honor to have . I love to listen to you !! Your such a fine Author and it’s a honor to see and hear you . Just Amazing such a fine gentleman! Thank you Scott Dickens Tennessee
Similar to Doyle's original audience, I too can hardly wait for the next installment of your Spells in the Library! What a delight to spend a brief moment under your tutelage and in your company! As always, thanks for sharing this.
Wow, this is so cool! Even today the editions of Narnia that I like best are the ones with all the Pauline Baynes illustrations. I have a few copies that only include one illustration at the beginning of each chapter. It's nice to see originals like this that the author specifically would have seen.
Peterson make wonderful pipes and I have got my eye set on a couple (I love the Aran and Donegal shapes) I have a good collection of pipes but alas no Peterson pipes yet but soon! I love autumn and winter for pipe smoking !
I really enjoyed this video. I love Sherlock Holmes. I would love to find a book like that. Thank you for sharing your wonderful books and insights with us. Have a blessed week my friend.
My favorite part of the Holmes original. A three pipe problem.(I love that) I wish I could smoke my pipe with you and your loyal hound George, with a nice coffee or nightcap, as you read in your lovely accented voice. I thank you for your channel. American politics have run its course on myself and the fragile ones in my life, im afraid, and my escape is good tobacco and books. I wish you well beyond 100 years, sir.
I love the smell of a good pipe this video was very interesting and the way you talk about the history of Sherlock Holmes just sucks you in and you can't stop watching this video that is a very good nice book that's for sharing
Another book i will be scouring eBay for no doubt. As you can probably tell by my avatar i am a huge sherlock fan - especially the Basil Rathbone film series - so I'm over the moon to see you are a fan too Malcolm. I keep thinking about investing in a peterson 'Sherlock Holmes' pipe but maybe a clay pipe would be more appropriate ... And cheaper!! Take care - Shaun
question dear sir, what tea do you prefer? i am a fan of earl gray, however i am curious what a learned man drinks when he is contiplating life and wordsmithing.
another question, the church of England or anglican church (My condolences for the Queen) seems like a nice sect, however the anglican church in my town no one is ever there how do you join or talk to someone? do you have to schedule a appointment? How does it work? and do you have any insights into it? I am a christian but have been lacking in my attendence of church . any thoughts would be helpful.
All you need is a Persian slipper for your tobacco and a jack-knife to affix your correspondence to the mantle. Do they still make "shag tobacco" or was that an invention of Conan Doyle?
A fine book and pipe sir! By chance, have you read Sir Doyle's 'The White Company' or 'Sir Nigel'? I discovered them last year and think they are gems.
I can just imagine the aroma in this room. From old book smells to tobaccos... wonderful!

Good pun!
Lovely story, Dr. Guite. Thank you for spending a little bit of your most valuable time with us!
God bless.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I, too, am a Sherlock Holmes fan. I love that the book has advertisements and other articles from the original Strand magazine.
I’ve only recently discovered your channel, and just today noticed it has only 23k subscribers. While happy for myself, I’m sad for everyone who hasn’t discovered it yet.
8 months on and it's at 109k so don't feel too bad. ^_^

This aesthetic is what the world needs more of
What a wonderful few minutes of pleasure ...good to know the origin of the ‘three pipe problem’. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it

yes it was the rathbone films, rather than the books that linked him with specifically Peterson Pipes
you must of be a true book collector, my dad was and I inherited it.
This was so fun !
Great video!
Thanks!
3:44 Weird! How much that does look like Cumberbatch!
What an amazing man this is.
Love your stuff Malcolm , love to know what Tobacco you like , Malcolm the pipe smoking plumber,
Deluxe Navy Twist, and, for something milder, Kendal Black cherry!
question dear sir, what tea do you prefer? i am a fan of earl gray, however i am curious what a learned man drinks when he is contiplating life and wordsmithing.
Pg tips and Yorkshire Gold

Not yet
Your voice would be fantastic on audio books.
thanks
do you find Oscar Wilde’s literary body any interesting?
i like 'the Importance of Being Earnest'
Sir, could you recommend a certain copy of the original Sherlock Holmes complete collection that is in print that I could purchase?
best to get a second hand one from abebooks
Nice pipe, nice book . What nice blend of tobacco were you smoking?
That was Kendal Black Cherry but it should have been Peterson's Sherlock Holmes!
This looks like the pipe from “Ceci n'est pas une pipe”. My fifth child was given the middle name Mycroft as a nod to Mr Holmes.
nice one!
Wait. Are you trying to tell me that original Strand Magazine was sold as hardcover book 😱
