Manual turbo volvos are a thing of beauty.
Tylersaurand I own an S60R. I love it
‘05 S40 T5 with the M66 here, passion red with the factory sport suspension - its basically a baby R
I have a 02 V70 2.4t, and It freaking goes, 200hp😉😎
I’ve got a V70R that I manual swapped. They are a thing of beauty!
2002 S60 T5S manual. Crazy beast
Volvo's are like that ex-girlfriend who you'll never get out of your mind.
And just like her, the memories are better than reality.
hot in a weird way, super fun to drive, but really finicky
@@desulv you been dating the wrong people then. honestly Volvos are so amazing, extremely practical vehicals, sleepers that no one expect, quiet and refined. if you had to compare volvo to a GF.. volvo would be the GF that can cook, clean, never complains, never gives up on you, keeps you going but visually pretty average...
i remember when i first got my XC70 with AWD nothing super fancy, just a wagon....base engine or maybe 1 option up... turned out it didn't have limiter installed or flashed i was doing 170+ MPH one day only knew it was over 160MPH cuz GPS, my gauge topped out at 160MPH...i had good reason though, my dad was slipping away at hospital...it was 2am and that stretch of road zero people for miles, so i took my chances.. i remember that thing wasnt slowing down, it was climbing up in speed still even over 170.. still climbing at a rate of 1 mph/sec but for it being an automatic and rev limited to 6500 rpm, it wasn't sticking around!
meehhhe Of You cool story bro
Ha! awesome description Vampirebear, here I am 4 or 5 years without a lil S40 T5 and I still can't get her out of my mind! And to really break my heart she had a manual. Very fucking hot lil machines, gave my crazy mates a thrill when they took her for a test drive
I drive a V70R. Most understated, unexpected vehicle to surprise people with. An absolute beast on the highway.
i got a "stage 1" S70 T5, basically poor man's R with less problems haha. Quick to 60, pulls like a V8 on boost. Only problem is 4spd auto, shifts fast enough, but long gears are loooong
Yep I got a 98 S70 T5, and a sonic blue M66 V70R and I love it. So much fun
Jesse LaMarche-Wehling electric silver V60 D6 Twin-Engine here
I drive an XC70 t2, not a V70R still handles like its on rails
I have similar experiences with my 87 Camry wagon it’s hilarious
My family wagon: Volvo V70 R Stick shift 1998 with 400 hp on low boost, coilovers, momo wheels etc, taking down BMW, Audis, mercedes every day..with the groceries in the back...best troll car ever.
nukedbunny I even got a little sticker on the back that looks like baby on board but says boost on board 😂😂 never had a car sooooo many people want to race haha

"no one expects the volvo"
i have the 20009 2.5 Ft only 200 hp But its a really nice car to own :D
Please don't say it's that burnt orange color. I'm already drooling. That was my favorite.
I had a s60r. These things are super sleepers. Little work and the thing is a rocket with super crash test ratings.
It's just sad that the 940/960 was the last RWD brick
i had a S60R and i remember going past 160 back when i had it i miss that car but it was to far gone to put money into needed like 11 grand in repairs for the turbo, brakes, suspension, exhaust, and i am pretty sure the motor was ready to go
Nuttty yep I know all about it. I got mine with very low miles but the older gentleman wasn't able to handle it so he smacked a pole harder than a one armed stripper. Couple grand it was like new. Did the exhaust and some other little things and it was a rocket. Sold her..... Shouldn't have.
Nuttty all of that sounds like stuff that you could have turned repairs into upgrades.
Absolutely the first time I’ve heard going 160 with your “desk top and flatware” in the car.
Jonathan Martin lol my family of 5 did 143mph on the Autobahn in a rented diesel wagon with 5 suitcases loaded in the back! Dad was driving and he sure pushed that wagon to the limit.. it was a Benz but still not a fast model!
pretty normal in germany. Travelling speed on unlimited parts is around 125mph for most people with the horses to do it.
I had one of around the same time, besides the very very expensive transfer case failure it was one of the best cars I have ever owned. Unless you want to take a 3-point turn, which in one of these is a 15 point turn.
Drive Offen I had an s80 with the v8... trying to turn that thing around was like trying to turn a container ship around with a 60 horsepower outboard
The Acura TL with SH-AWD isn’t too bad to turn. Much better than my old S60R
Who’d a thunk it a dream Volvo, my very first car was a Volvo, mine was a 1968 142 completely stock, 103 top speed and it reached these speeds many times, impeccable handling ( I know all slow cars handle well) but you’d have to see the situations we put it through, lot of nostalgia for the old girl
That solid metal look shifter boot looks really cool.
They call it the spaceball
It’s pretty awesome
Something special about the spaceball!!
Its a spaceball boi
Looks just like an FN2 Civic one!
I had to learn the hard way that there are fast Volvo's and saab's 😭

This guy remembers these stories like it was yesterday.
Seeing an S60R and an 850 in the same frame and story will ALWAYS make my day.
If I ever manage to get my hands on an S60R I’d find it very hard to let go of...
An M66 S60R. Rare, so rare.
What’s even more rare is an M66 V50 T5!
that was a great narrative. bring this guy back please. thanks VinWiki!
This is the best video, because the S60R's are amazing. M66 is fantastic.
I actually just bought one a month or two ago. Honestly one of my favorite cars I've ever driven.
Dude Shark how do you like it? I own one and I love it
Lucky duck. I have yet to own an s60r. I have an s80 with the 2.4 NA tho. (First car still)
Bought my second in March. Had to fly from Ky to Fla to find a manual. Then drove it back home. Worth it though, Especially since it was snowing in Ky at the time.
very nice, I was trying to find one bujt they were beat up so I went with a mazdaspeed3 now making 380 whp
Owned a 1995 Volvo 850 T5 Estate 2.3L Turbo great fun to drive in a straight line, hugely practical and cool if nothing else! Really nice car to be in too even for a 23 year old wagon! If you're thinking of trying out a Volvo give it a shot!
i just bought an 04 s60r with 80k miles on it. super excited to get everything up to scratch and also super excited to see the small yet passionate p2 r community out there.
LOLVO; brilliant. Nice clean S60R
Nice Saab Wagon in the photo as well!

I have been refurbishing a 2005 Volvo S60R, they are so much fun to work on! Plenty of room to fit your hands in, great engineering!
I had a 2005 S60R manual. Incredibly fun car. And I absolutely had some scared passengers. It looks pretty unassuming to the untrained eye. That’s one of the many reasons I loved it. And yes, I wish I still had it. Great video. Great story telling. Thank you!
S60Rs are awesome I really wanted one but now that they’re 15 years old I don’t want to deal with the maintenance on one. Turbo 5 cylinders can’t be cheap
West Desert Shooter I own a V70r (wagon version same car) and you are really correct
They're not as bad as you'd think having owned two, you can do all the work yourself. The real cost is all the tools and special one offs.
Buuuut you can get a ton of different parts for them from fcp with a lifetime warranty
And most problems can be diagnosed with vida
My 06 R was solid as a rock until I sold it at 170k miles. Didn't have to add any oil between my 10k oil change intervals. I towed with it a lot too (3000+ pounds). Awesome tow vehicle actually.
I've had 16 Volvos- # 16 is my 2004 S60R - we've had it 7 years and I've added 200,000 miles to the odo. We've been to 25 states in it, and is just the best car I've ever owned. Wife says she'll bury me in it.
I didn't know Harry Potter drove a Volvo😂😂
Wow, can relate to Russell's story quite a bit! Got mine without knowing a ton but just loved how obscure it was so I had to have it. Learned how to drive stick on it from my dad, and the first night I drove it alone I was clocked 1km/h below getting impounded. Had tons of fun over the years as I went on roadtrips, wrenched on the car and had quite a few mods, met tons of Volvo enthusiasts, and it helped kickstart my career in the automotive aftermarket industry :)
Sold it 2.5 years ago, and I miss it daily. Wish I could have kept it, but it helped pay my way through university. Would love one again!!
I have a 2004 S60R! You either love or hate the spaceball
Nick I have one too I love it
Space ball and Pegasus wheels= darn fun car to drive!
I got me a regular s60, but i love it with all my heart. It handles well and its lowkey
The headlight wipers tho
Sam that's that Rolls Royce shit right there
creep life psh RRs don’t even have them!
It's meant for the snow :)
They work great for the snow we get
S60R is sought after in the Volvo community, it's one of our top dogs so to speak. We try to keep to ourselves though so not a lot of people know about Volvos and the community
I absolutely love my S60R
Got my first car 9 months ago. A teal blue 2008 Volvo s40 2.4i manual for $500. My uncles boss was selling the car and it was his daily driver but needed to get rid of it because he was retiring. Has 208,000 miles on the clock which fortunately are almost all highway miles. However it was regularly maintained and I have every single receipt from each time it was taken in for maintenance since 2008. While my uncle was test driving and I was with him (I didn’t know how to drive manual) my father asked him why he was selling such a good car for so cheap. He simply responded with “I just want someone to enjoy my car as much as I did and selling it for cheap makes people appreciate the car even more.” In the end it only needed new tires and brakes. Volvo FTW!
Demetrios b awesome bro....best of luck.... first car and a stick....you’ll make some awesome memories !!! :) EVERYbodies first car should have a similar storyline or similar past , mine did :) FUN times
Demetrios b that Volvo is a ford focus in a suit
Driving cars on the highway is actually better for the engine
My first car was a 2001 Subaru Forster (Manual)
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long, more Volvos please... love it!!!
Ian Ahearn saaaaaame
I own an 04' S60r. I popped 3 tires the first year I owned it (I'm in the North East). It has the worst turning radius of any vehicle I've experienced. It drives like a dream in a straight line/medium curves. I've driven by cops going at least 90-95, multiple times and for some reason this car is invisible to them, they've never come after me.
Learn where your car is and stop hitting curbs 😂
I own an M66 '07 T5 S60, it gets 298 metric hp and 306 when it just had an oil change, though it has been chipped to 310 at the crank, but it's FWD. Its top speed is 263 on the speedometer, but 252 gps (limited), 0-125 mph : 19.5 seconds. I have had it for 4 years now, colour 452. I'd only switch it for an R. BSR exhaust. Love it to bits. At 176 000 kms now.
what build you got on that? got the same but with the Aisin slushbox. looking to get it to 300+
The Cruisin' USA analogy was spot on 😂 great video as always!
I recently purchased an 04 m66 V70R, I'm in love with it, its costing me all of my money for the repairs it needs, but god is it an incredible machine
I had a s60 that didn’t have a limiter. Got it to 171mph on the i5. I replaced the fuel pump and injectors with a higher volume installed a chip, a split second boost controller all came in a kit I found in the Swede speed forum. It made a little over 330hp. it ran a high 12 after it was stripped of all its interior.
It surprised a lot people out at tuner night at Famoso raceway.
Love S60Rs actually born and raised in Pittsburgh and that car thru the corners those cars are a hidden gem. I wish they would have been more popular. They were absolutely great
Finally, a story time video on my car!! I have a tuned grey 2004 Volvo S60R making around 300 to the wheels! I wonder if mine is a unicorn as well, only 1500 6 speeds were imported to the U.S. that year..
Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is an awesome time. Would love to see VINwiki booth!
My 2002 S80 Premier with the T6 engine is the real sleeper. Taking off is a blast especially when the front tires go up in smoke.
I had an 02 S60R AWD that was phenomenal. I got it up to 158-160 too going down I-70 in MD. Unfortunately 3 years ago the engine blew, she lived a good life tho bought her with 120k miles she passed into car heaven with over 300K miles.
The only downside of getting one of those only unicorn volvos, they are just funky cars. Mines was this ocean blue-teal color, with cream interior with body color inserts and a wood grain accent on the dash. Was a hot mess too look at but the Swedish know how to put a car together mechanically.
The only started making them in 04 though...at least in the states.
I got my '05 S40 T5 (6 speed manual) a little over a year ago. I remember one night, in Texas, right after getting a full set of nice new pirellis, I tried to see how fast it could go. I got to 140 mph on SW Loop 410 before the thing began demonstrating it's aspirations to become a plane. I don't know how I never got pulled over in Texas. I still love driving my bad bitch little swedish sleeper.
If there was an example of what a "volvo owner" looks like. This guy would top it.
Fun thing is that here in Sweden those cars are super rare! If you ship one over you can sell it for a fortune. I have an 855 T5 and that sob is an Italy import.
Sweep car at the tarmac Rally Tennessee in 2005 was an unprepped S60R. Dude was putting on a show. Commonly heard over the radio: "Please tell sweep to COOL IT...!!!"
@5:24 There's an amazing AirBNB on that hilltop in the background in Malibu!
Having driven an S60R a must call BS on the notion of one being able to negotiate a hairpin turn... unless it's a 200 foot wide hairpin or involves a 5 point turn. ;-) But seriously, aside from the battleship turning radius, failure prone stock suspension and angle gear failures they are awesome cars. The last two issues can be fixed and I suppose you could learn to cope with the lazy radius in time. The 20V turbo five is a great engine... I'm most familiar with the Audi 20V fives but like them in Swedish bricks as well.
Darin Nederhoff , 100%!!! I hated that about my R. Didn't notice when i bought it.
Darin Nederhoff Battleship turning LMFAO
4 bolts to remove the rubber/metal steering stops on the control arms. Doesn't make a huge difference but it does help. Still have to do it to my 06 V70R M66
we had 2 an 04 flash green and an 07 grey. Absolute awesome cars but 100% agree the turning radius was god awful especially with the 18” wheels. Replaced the angle gears in both and can’t tell you how many times the suspension was repaired.
Only noticeable in two scenarios, one being parking lots and the other u-turns. But yes it's definitely annoying.. just have to point out it doesn't effect normal road or track driving
I love fast Volvo's. Its so great to see a manual trans version in the US. I don't blame him for wanting it back. I wouldn't have sold it in the first place. Very cool. Thanks.
Love the S60Rs owned two, and boy do I have some stories... Regret selling my last one....
We love our S60 turbo. It's fast and been in 2 accidents where we drove home and the other person left on a tow truck.
My second car was a 91 240. Such a fun car. Loved how well it did in the winter being a Swedish-made car. Started right up, heat worked like a damn sauna, and the car gripped the road relatively well for RWD. Unfortunately was very expensive to maintain as a daily driver with 200k+ miles on it and parts have started to dry up recently. Even had to import brake dust shields directly from Sweden, as no US parts place or dealer has stocked them in quite some time. The prior owner really didn't take good care of it and it had to eventually be put out to pasture. If given the chance I would definitely buy another Volvo, but it has to be a turbo model.
Bought an s60r and I absolutely love it. Great first car.
I had a 73 242 in high school and a 65 544 later. I loved both of them.
1:20 the subtitle is just oh boy oh boy oh boy ...................lol
Aye I hope this brings back the S60R into the streets, I am driving a passion red with full valence kit it smokes them stis and evos with a tune no problem
My wife has had S60’s since 2002, she drives an XC60 now and my youngest daughter has an ‘05 S40 with a 2.5t. It’s like a go kart, wish my first car was that fun! I’m a Chevy truck guy, but want an S40 as a daily driver.
Dude i love volvo's so much they are insane my dad used to own t5r and it was fast it would keep up with r32 skyline's with hardly anything done to it
I started with an s40 as my first car and now have a turbo s60 and they are just intoxicating cars. I’ve done 85 in the turns in my s60 and felt unbelievably stable.
My friend had one of those back in high school. His parents had no idea what it really was, thinking it was just a regular old volvo. Boy were they wrong. Good memories in that car
I knew a guy who bought one of these thing in the mid 2000’s. This was during my modified wrx phase. He said his car was faster. Uh...
He then takes me for a ride. His car was modified with downpipe, larger intercooler, bigger turbo, tune, etc. This thing absolutely flew! Was faster than my buddy’s C5! Total sleeper.
i have a hand-me-down '92 940 gl with 330,000 miles and while it definitely shows its age (wiring going wonky, parts expiring) it can still keep up with modern traffic, and even with a bad steering rack and worn to hell tie rod it hit 100 at 3600 rpm. god i love my swedish tank!
my boyfriend has one literally exactly like this except it's an 05, black paint with the space ball manual lmao
it's SUCH a cool and fun car
My neighbors have that exact Volvo. Same color, those big spokes... And it sounds awesome when he pulls in. I still have my T5 Turbo (I wish it was AWD though)
You were so lucky to have experienced a Volvo S60R! Good luck getting it back.
I had a 850 T. Loved it so much
A volvo s60r is my dream car and that year model too. I have a volvo s60 non turbo with 240,000 miles and still running great
I have one in California
I’m so proud to own one of these cars.
Same here! Just picked up a 1996 850R sedan a few months ago with 75,000 miles that I'm restoring and I love it to death :P
I have 2 turbo Volvo’s at 18 and it’s amazing
Stories like this make it all worthwhile.
(Used to work 80 kms away, so l'd take the Toll Road in my 79 316 dual-body carb p.o.s. at an *average* of about 140km/h and 5 mpg...)
hehe
My first car was a 1999 S70, a 19 year old car by the time I got it, I was the 8th owner. About as basic as they got: no turbo, no AC, Gasoline fueled 5-cylinder. I've been told that she had been treated rough with barely any maintenance, but no oil leaks, no power loss, started and ran like clockwork, just had some electrical issues in the front passenger door and I had to replace the radio antenna because the old one was bent. I've been through a road-safety course with her, she was the largest and oldest one there, and she kept up with much younger Golfs and Peugeots in the safety department.
I had to get rid of her for two reasons: fuel consumption is no joke on a big car like that and the alternator was starting to have gremlins after 20 years of use and abuse. My dad traded it in for a Renault Twizy and I got his 2014 Ecoboost Ford Focus, a much better car in every objective way compared to an old Volvo, but it lacks the character of the ol' gal.
I love my Volvo, not the high pressure turbo but still goes decent on the highway.
I used to have one!!! I miss that car!
I would die for a Volvo S60R
Buying one tmr ;)
Bought one last week with a m66
@@robert.adamek how has it been?
Volvo! I just got my first one, a S60. It’s absolutely amazing! I think lm a Volvo addicted for life! The car is luxurious, beautiful, comfortable, reliable and incredibly powerful!
I owned a 2005 S60R 6spd. It was water damaged title. But with many many mods, I managed 168mph Somewhere between FLW Mo and Louisville Ky. Still have it saved in my old Garmin. Today I own a 2004 R with 125K on it. Love these cars, Hoping to reach 500hp with it.
Yessss finally VOLVO
bvk Cars I know right. The p2 and the p80s are very underrated chassis from Volvo. I love them. I’m lucky to have a p2 s80 won’t the 2.4 NA 5 cylinder. There are a few other videos with Randy Pobst that have Volvo. He is a Volvo guy.
We went to a Volvo launch event for these cars back in 2003. Great cars! 2006 V70R with a manual trans would still be great.
I had a magic blue S60r. I miss it
I had a 740 turbo with a bunch of motor mods done to it I loved taking my friends out in it getting thare impression on my old volvo wagon
My first car was a 2003 Volvo S60 T5. Basically the same car but FWD. it was actually a lot of fun
Great way to start of May long :) Thanks
I have two cars a 2013 Dodge Charger SRT8 and a 2007 Volvo S80 V8 AWD. I love them both.
I grew up with older RWD turbo manual volvos, all the way up to 850Rs and V70Rs and they are amazing cars, especially when modded.
lol saw one of these beasts in downtown cleveland other day, think it was straight piped too
Mine is straight piped from the heads back. I have a magnaflow high flow piping in it 2 3/4" in it. It rumbles like a little Ferrari. I have kyb shock n strut up front, kyb in rear. Ebc brakes, drilled slotted rotors, IPD tire rods, K&N cold air intake, and a ton of audio upgrades. She still runs like a dream. Just was thinking of getting a 12 Audi a6 3.0t now. I've had my Volvo 6yrs and best running car I've ever had hands down.
Good looking car! Something special with black S60`s!
Do like those I5 from Volvo, can be quite quick, but also just relaxing as their revs are just so low when cruising. My dad has had a few XC70, that slight lift to the wagon just makes them look great and they are comfy as can be.
I just got an 04 today, it needs a clear coat, and some interior work
Congrats! Auto or Stick?
Pittsburgh represent!!
wellmax beat me to it!!
I'm from a hour north of Pittsburgh and love my s60. Best car I've ever owned.
I had an s60R for about a year until I broke engine and it went through 3 head gaskets before I traded it. Most comfortable I’ve owned, great car.
Dude I love my 05 S60R.
Damn. I hope this guy got his car back. That's a badass sleeper. I have an 850 and a Mercedes E550 and I saw a grey s60r with a 6 speed manual for sale for 6500 that I'm thinking of buying
Had the T5 in a ST Focus 07 6 gear Getrac with Borg Warner turbo. Catback and induction kit, aftermarket boost controller. Just 250hv and over 320Nm of torque. Torque comes just under 1500rpm.
cheers from sweden
Also on my first night with my S60R I caught a G50 911 at a light around 1:30am, 0-100 he never stood a chance!
I can see my old house where I grew up in at 5:23. That shot is on Piuma Rd in Malibu and is 5.7 miles of amazing driving.
I would love an S60R but truthfully my desire is for an S40 T5 AWD and maybe get some Evolv upgrades. It's like a swedish Evo.... I raced one in the SRT on a curvy road, and on straights I was pulling out but in the corners he was hard on it
loveableterror I have a 2010 S40 T5 with a manual transmission, AWD and Polestar tune and love it!!
I bought one new in 2004. I hated it for one main reason: THE TURNING CIRCLE IS BIGGER THAN AN F-150. I once had to do a little 3 point turn in drive thru to keep from curbing the rims.
Oh yea, with stock suspension it still scraped everywhere.
The push button suspension was pretty crazy though. "advanced" felt like a truly track only setting.
Oh and how could i forget!? The awd was bullshit. The output shaft from the front wheels wore off it's splines in about 3 years. After that is was fwd only.
