What is occuring to me about "loving" a particular car, especially a wagon and especially a Volvo wagon is, these cars have, for some of us, the vibe of faithful loyal nurshing companions, and some of us will not abandon them because we can know, if unconsciously, that they are, in fact a friend.

Our V70R was awesome to own. Such a great community built around it and the larger Volvo community as a whole is fantastic. The Rs on the whole are super finicky with wonky electrics and not the best build quality when compared to Volvos of the 70s-90s. Many blame Ford for that. But when these things work they are SUPER rewarding to drive and the sound they make with a proper exhaust is one of the best ever. Really glad you're getting the chance to own one Elliott, even if it's not ideal!

I have a story, I recently bought a barn find Countach for $300...
I was on a date driving up in the mountains, when I get a call from a friend of mine.
He tells me an older woman was walking by his house and saw his race spec Miata outside and asked if he'd like to come over. Her husband used to be a race car and he recently passed away. As a result she finally decided to sell off all of his tools and cars.
So my friend heads over to this wonderland of car guy stuff calls me up and tells me she has a "wooden racecar" and a "Lotus". I told him well im not sure on the wooden car, but I do like lotus's. How much does she want for the Lotus? He tells me she wants $900 for the wooden car and $300 for the Lotus. I tell him that for $300 im really interested, and to send me some pics. 30 seconds later I get photos of a 1980's Countach! I call him immediately back and say "THAT'S NOT A LOTUS, THATS A DAMN LAMBORGHINI COUNTACH!!! AND SHE WANTS $300 FOR IT??!! Is it real? Does it have all the parts?" My friend responses "im not sure but it has this really cool wing" "IT HAS THE WING??!! Dude is there any way I can come check this thing out tomorrow? I'm on a first date right now and can't really leave."
"Well the thing is there are some other race car guys coming over in a bit to check it out"
(Me quick thinking) "dude you got $300 on you?" "Yeah?" "Tell her it's sold and I'll Venmo you back!"
The next day I went over to her house to see it. It was a white beauty, it had been modified for tracking (cause the guy was a Raceway guy), so the lambo doors were removed and put gull wing for easier in and out. The wife even told me she had found the title that day too. I promised her id finish his restoration and would race thus car again. After that, I went to her house every day after work for the next 2 weeks, cleaning out this old shop/Barn to unveil the Countach. As well as piecing back together parts of it so I could get it on rolling classic to trailer it. Through out the weeks, the wife also told me that she remembered at one point it was running! Looking into it the starter was stuck so I couldn't get it to fire at the time. After cleaning the barn. I got some dollies and me and 4 friends got the car rotated 180 degrees, and then pushed into my enclosed trailer. Which because of how wide Countschs are it only cleared the back end by 1/4 on the front until it got to the hips and the that was it. Closing the end of the trailer, it is cleared by millimeters. The it was off to my shop, where im currently working on it/restoring it. I even got it to run once again (its so loud!) and am close to having it drivable. I can't wait for this adventure to unfold, and can't wait so share the build process with everyone 😃
If you liked this story please help spread the word and let @EdBolian @Vinwiki know about it 😊

I have a S80 3.0 non turbo and that is good but I have already spent more than the car cost me on replacing some of the onboard systems, e.g. the suspension computer which corroded inside the car (and no sunroof to leak!), the main computer as the car would not start - that even confused my mechanics!

The Volvo community is telling him to not give up on this car, I wonder if those 4 people convinced him into actually going through with it. Maybe Elon will see this and reach out just because it's a Spaceball and he will channel the Schwartz from Yogurt and it will run again, who knows it just may just needs to have some Liquid Schwartz added in to the blinker fluid reservoir.

I think the Volvo community is so great because Volvo put so much love into each car. They where literally given a car and told to just change the badge and the looks then sell it but they didn't. They would completely redesign it from the ground up. Even saying we don't like your electronics so we are going to invest millions to make our own lol. After all they always say you never know why a Volvo cost so much until you crash it.

As a fellow S60R owner I can see your left 'A' pillar trim is peeling away, this is from water overflowing the sunroof drain tray at the front left hand side due to the drain being blocked or kinked and the water then running down the 'A' pillar trim.
I had a L/H front drain kinked on mine when I bought it but thankfully my car is R/H drive so my CEM (Central Electronic Module) is on the other side.

My S60R's serpentine belt slipped off and got caught up in the timing and bent all my valves. Going to replace the head soon and I can't wait to have it back, I tried to sell that car 3 times and just couldn't had money in hand once. I learned manual on that spaceball and having worked at audi/porsche/lexus/etc, Volvo outdid themselves with the M66. Car is just so unique and hard to explain to people why I can't give it up, outside of the friends I let drive it...

All of them were in a constant state of disintegration, I had to reach into the dash where the radio had been to use my windshield wipers on the second 240, it just kept burning through wiper motors) and I deeply miss all of them.

This has likely been mentioned in the comments. And by now, I’m sure you have looked into repairing your sunroof drain hoses. I had to do that for my sons 2005 T5 S40. It was so bad that if he left it out in the rain the water would drain directly into the footwell on the drivers side. Which soaked the electronics on the way to the floorboard. Fortunately it was an easy fix by removing and replacing the drivers side rubber drain tubing. The drain tube (when functioning properly). Connects the sunroof area to the front left quarter panel.
One of the biggest problem is that these cars are designed to be recycled. The rubber parts degrade over time.

I was a dyed in the wool VOLVO station wagon guy for many years when my 750 wagon let me know the entire front end was about to go, and needed another 2k worth of work. My Mechanic even said "It's time". After a solid month of looking around, I found an XC70 a ten hour drive away in Edmonton, and flew in and bought it. Edmonton also has the closest VOLVO dealer, and the thing about their dealerships, is that they do not give out the computer codes to fix problems. You HAVE to bring it into them for any computer work. This Fact was about to bite me in the ass... . I had a great drive back to P.G. 6 weeks later, I noticed the tranny slipping going up a hill. The tranny fluid at 129k had never been changed! That was it for that tranny. I sourced a used one from Vancouver Island, and paid 800 to bring it up here. I had it installed, and all was good, but only for about 6 weeks...I was driving up a small hill, there was a massive BANG,. and tranny light came on again, It would only drive in manual (tiptronic transmission) but I had all 5 forward gears, and reverse, but no automatic. I was 14k into the car, and was totally crushed. Then the place I got the tranny said " You need to bring it to a dealership, get a diagnosis, and until that was done, there could be no refund". The car drove perfectly except I was terrified to leave Prince George here in Northern BC, so it did not leave the city for two entire years, and only put 2k on the car. Then I needed another part, and had to talk to the place I sourced the tranny from, and this time the Owner talked to me. He had my file in front of him, and asked me how the car was. I told him I had reverse and all 5 forward gears, and that was all, he hesitated, and said " My friend, there is nothing at all wrong with transmission. It needs a dealer only reflash. Get it to Edmonton!"A few weeks later, I drove to Edmonton pretty much freaking out that is was not going to work. I had mapped out all the car wreckers between P.G. and Edmonton, and was prepared ,if the tranny failed, to get a tow there and leave it behind. Well, next morning at the Dealership, I had the hour long 150 buck transmission reflash . That was 8 years ago, and this amazing car is still parked right outside and is going strong. I have no intention of ever moving from P.G., and as such, with VOLVO's privacy codes biz, and the dealership being a ten hour drive away, this is definitely my last VOLVO. Sad Kerry...

The S40 was doing weird electrical stuff, triggering the alarm, dimming the lights etc. , it turned out that the sunroof drains were clogged and water got in the electrical system. Problem solved.
