As someone who did debate in college, this will always be my favorite episode.
For those that went to college, the whole series hits harder. Still can't get over how brilliant they made a registration joke into Modern Warfare.

What's great about this scene is the Jeff-Annie relationship seed starts getting planted, very subtlety, two episodes before this and so this is the big payoff of that little trilogy, setting the course for the rest of the show.
What I also love here is that Whitman thought he knew a life chang-ing kiss when he saw one (Britta kissing Jeff so he could seize the day), but it left Jeff unimpressed and underwhelmed. Here, with Whitman present, Jeff experiences what truly is a life changing kiss and is left speechless and dazed.

I loved normal-ish episodes like these during season 1 and 2

The pinnacle of these, imho, is Physical Education. It's just so effortlessly great.
This is why S1 is the best season IMO. The other seasons may get wild with off-the-wall concept episodes, but S1 did the best job of combining the craziness with genuine heart. One of the best seasons of TV ever.

These two belong together! Annie challenged Jeff to get outside his comfort zone and Jeff let Annie be herself while supporting her
They both forced each other out of their comfort zone. Annie forced Jeff to take things seriously and put in effort while Jeff forced Annie to "go off script".

This was the first episode of Community I ever saw. It had me hooked.
I was so confused the when I saw the scene of debate makeout without any context. But the brilliance of this show is so commendable that I keep on watching Community every so often just for the zingers they put out.
This scene demonstrated what community was capable to do and go off book as in not your typical school drama shows.
Kinda like that gaara vs rock lee scene that got you even more hooked in the series.
Jeff: This better not awaken anythi....too late.

It’s happening
It was episodes like this that made community in the beginning. I mean, everyone loves the DnD and Paintball episodes and some of the more high concept episodes like the stop motion Christmas episode, but I always thought the show was at its best when it dealt with more 'schoolish' stuff like this and the wearing shorts to pool episode.
This is top community. One of the best if not the best of the first season.
The episode where I (and many others) fell for Miss Edison
The first episode where the chemistry between Annie and Jeff was so palpable it was impossible to ignore. It immediately made me stop rooting for Jeff and Britta.
I never liked Jeff being with Annie. 🤮
In my mind (and hopefully in the #AndAMovie!), Jeff and Britta ended up getting married and they now have three kids. And for some crazy reason, Annie was still a little infatuated with him but then her and Magnitude had an amazing night in DC during a convention and everyone is getting together because they are getting married on New Year's Eve (Pop Pop!!). 😁

Sadly when they went with the Annie Jeff stuff they turned britta into a parody of herself, Troy became nothing but Abed's friend, and Pierce lost any redeemable character traits. The writing just progressively got worse, as happens when show's bring on new writers every season and move away from the original concept. Same here.

@@jasontibbetts9981 I agree for most part. Troy became much more stupid and annoying but he still was hilarious and sometimes had good intellectual moments. Britta got dirty, she's by far the worst character. Yet season 2,3 a lil bit of 5,6 are remarkable part of tv and are so good. Also going back few weeks ago and watching some episodes again for idk which time I finally realized that many episodes are not only hilarious but also great character study, showing real flaws and how the study group grows. Some good morals are in these episodes.

This is one of the most poetic and impactful scenes in television history. The dichotomy and the paradoxical characteristic of their opponents is so surreal yet true. Its the epitome of intellectual. Community might seem like a fun goofy sitcom on the outside but truly it is one of the most intellectual shows ever made !! It talks about practically everything in life!
This is the greatest show of all time and I can't be convinced otherwise

I only watched it a few times, but I'm pretty sure that the reaction that Pierce, Shirley, Troy and Abed have to Jeff catching Simmons, and then Jeff dropping Simmons, is the exact same clip.

Community S1 is one of the best seasons of TV of all time. I love the whole show, but none of the other seasons nail the combination of comedy and genuine heart the way S1 does. Absolutely stellar. I am so happy that Ludwig Goransson went on to have such a great career; his score for S1 was magical.
I love that Jeff is actually sitting on the table. Then when the wheelchair dude starts coming over, that's when Jeff stands up, to protect Annie. Then of course because Jeff is ,"good" he stays there to catch the guy.

I wonder what the context is behind 'Ketchup is a vegetable'.
Edit: I just found out today (13 September 2024) that it's a Reagan era reference regarding then nutritional guidelines for school lunches; the standards were so low they had to classify ketchup as a vegetable. Thanks John Oliver from Last Week Tonight!

Actually, Jeff gets this wrong at 1:12. It was Paul who wrote "there is none righteous; no, not one," and he was quoting the Psalms.
Jesus is the word of God and as such the Bible is all about extension of the Word made flesh.

For reference, he is probably referring to Jesus speaking to the Rich Young Ruler in Matthew 19 when Jesus says (KJV translation), "And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God ..." So, similar sentiment, but not the exact correct verse reference, I agree.

The wheelchair guy gambled a lot on Jeff having good reflexes. I know a lot of speech and debate members that would have completely dropped or been tackled by the dude.

She was far wiser and more emotionally and morally mature than her age would suggest, which in my opinion offset her youth. And her positive influence on Jeff (and his on her) is undeniable.

I’m confuse about 2 things in the debate:
1) How does Annie kissing Jeff made them win the debate?
2) Instead of the kiss, why she didn’t point out the opponent’s action, an action that leads to harm, proof that “Man Is Evil”?
If you look at the composition and pacing of this scene, while it's not an exact match, it looks like a precursor for the pivotal scene in Avengers: End Game.
