Another reason Jakarta is sinking that not many people talk about is because the clean water supply there is poor, people is extracting underground fresh water causing the ground to sink below sea level

Jakarta is staying inshaAllah, the same problem faced by Tokyo in 1960 and they can solve it. Over extraction of ground water is the main problem and it has been addressed despite not as aggressive as I would see, but at least the government has build Karian Dam in Banten province as future water source for Jakarta pipe water system and also build water treatment facility in Jatiluhur dam that will be completed in 2023 for the dam and 2024 for water treatment facility.
There will be law made about Jakarta that would be completed in last Jokowi administration. All of the parliament members have agreed that despite Jakarta is no longer serve as Indonesia capital city, but it special status will remain, and Jakarta is still planned as Business Center of Indonesia.
I just dont know why those Western educated journalist think that Jakarta as business center will be replaced by city in Kalimantan island where main industry and business located in Java ? That is logic, so the new Capital is not mean to relocate Jakartan people to Kalimantan island, but it is more on political thing to balance the power that for so long concentrated in Java island. It is good to improve the Indonesia national unity and also in the long run can make Kalimantan island get more developed. Kalimantan as an island that is potential with its renewable resorces as it has many big rivers needs more push to be developed further

Thanks my PH brother. In fact my President made a decision to move the capital city to Kalimantan was to follow what has been initially planned by our first President Sukarno. The first President had a visionary idea that the Capital city of Indonesia should be geographically situated in the middle of the archipelago.
The Sukarno successors, except President Jokowi had not gut and courage to make such a brave decision.

Lots of people don't know that this is actually the second time. Indonesia in 1950s was already planning to make a new capital in Kalimantan. A city called *Palangkaraya* was made from scratch. However the project stopped soon after Sukarno fell.
Though it failed to become national capital, the city continue to grew and became the capital of Central Kalimantan province.
And.. Sinking isn't the only problem for Jakarta. Flood has always been a constant threat there since ancient times, because of its location - many rivers flow through Jakarta from the higher southern areas, and Jakarta is their estuaries. The city also located not far from the infamous Krakatoa volcano. Jakarta has been strucked by earthquakes many times and if the volcano erupted violently again like it did in 1883, or worse, Jakarta would be gone.
FYI, Indonesia is situated on top of the so called "Ring Of Fire" and has hundreds of active volcanoes. So volcano eruptions, earthquakes, and even Tsunamis are natural threats for many areas in Indonesia, including Jakarta. Hence the need for a new capital that is safe from all that.
Sukarno knew this, that's why he planned it and made Palangkaraya 65 years ago.
    *Edit : addition...

The sea level is getting higher and higher, the ice in the north and south poles continues to melt, making the world's sea levels higher. If Jakarta is an early example of a city that is sinking, then your city on the coast will also sink sooner or later

I'm from Brazil, the country that jumpstarted this insane idea of creating a new capital in the middle of nowhere. And I'll tell you: even though the governments always try to create a nice narrative to support that idea, the real motivation will be always elitist.
The people in power, alongside the elite civil servants, want to live away from the problems they created themselves. They will create a new capital, which works like a gated community, to happily ignore poverty, crime, traffic, pollution, overcrowding and rising rent prices. And those capitals will always have an added bonus: they make impossible for the people to protest in front of the palaces and exert real pressure on national policy. A project of this size will also generate nice profits from embezzlement and corruption.
What Brazil did and similar developing countries such as Nigeria and Kazakhstan copied is very different to what USA, Australia or Canada have done back in the 18th or 19th century. In their case, the new capital was necessary to maintain an equilibrium of power among states/provinces in a federal union. That didn't happened here, where the Federal Government controls more than 60% of the national budget and gives little autonomy to the states, and definitely won't happen in Indonesia too, another centralized government.
And I'm telling that as someone who's from São Paulo, the city which was harmed the most by the central power when it was concentrated in Rio.

Brazil definitely as the case you mentioned, but i highly disagree to some of your points. As it was mentioned umpteen times and people seems to be blind and deaf, Jakarta is sitting on Java island, smack right in the so called 'ring of fire'. We are not stranger to volcano eruptions and earthquakes. Not to mention, Jakarta is sinking at the rate of 11inches per year and about 40% already below sea water level. Effort to slow down the sinking was undertaken by government, but not enough to stop especially without any awareness or effort from its own residents who still use much of ground water. Fear of corruption within this policy to move the capital no doubt is valid, but waiting for Indonesia or the world to be free from corruption is like waiting for the sky to fall, it will never happened.
Reasons to move the capital are also valid and justified, albeit with lots of difficulties and risks. This will take time to bear fruits, but i have no doubt that we have to do it.

The root cause of the poor civil infrastructure management and planning is due to the fact that for most of its history, Indonesia's modern cities were based on the Dutch design and technology. The sudden handover of power from the Dutch to the Indonesians after the Japanese occupation means that there was a huge technological gap and lost of knowledge. During the Suharto era, negligence and corruption were rampant, and with regards to serious civil developments, non-existent. The indigenous ways of civil developments need to be modeled seriously on modern western technologies and styles, as is the case for modernized nations like Japan, Singapore, South Korea.

A site had been chosen and preparation had been made but it stopped mid way soon after Sukarno fell. (Though failed to become the new national capital city, the site grew to become the city of Palangkaraya which is now the capital of Central Kalimantan province).

Are you for real?! ANY NORMAL SANE PERSON WOULD ADVISE INDONESIANS TO GET THE F OUT OF THERE!!!! You do realize it's located right ON TOP of the ring of fire right?! All those earthquakes, tsunamis happening there, is a recipe for disaster. A much safer plan, would be to re-locate them towards Eastern Sumatra overlooking Singapore, as far away from the Western flank as possible.

Spending too much money for a new capitol for a developing country like us with so many problems like poverty, unemployment is wasting for me. Can you guarantee the building belongs to the government or private sector? And we have to rent it? Go check other country, business capitol and government capitol are not too far away. Jakarta to east kalimantan is far away. It will need more cost for government for work travelling from and to Jakarta as business capitol.
Jakarta just need more inprovement in handling flood and everything will be okay. Remember, we are not rich country. Don't waste money even from loan for something that is not urgent.

That shows building a new capital city from scratch doesn't necessarily will end in failure in Indonesia.

Jokowi has no money. He repeatedly says 2023 will have gloom overlook with incoming global crisis. Even now the indonesian rupiah os sharply depreciating against US dollar (from 14500/1 USD to 15400/1 USD).
At this kind of situation, postponing the relocation will be a logical thing to do. Allocate the money (APBN) for social safety net programs, rather spending it for Jokowi's white elephant project to appease some elites' agenda.
