How far are Israel's Ultra-Orthodox willing to go to avoid military service? | DW News

- In a landmark decision the Supreme Court ruled that Haredim Jews, the ultra-orthodox part of Israeli society, cannot be exempt from military service. They’ve been excused for nearly 80 years. But now the court says laws must be made fairer. The prospect of ultra-orthodox Jews being conscripted into the army is stoking tensions both in society and the government coalition. DW’s senior international correspondent Fanny Facsar reports from within the ultra-orthodox community with a rare access to one of its neighbourhoods in Jerusalem.
