Since Israel's inception, the Haredi - ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism -have been exempt from the country's military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country's secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.
The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF's Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government's decision.

Whether I agree with all aspects of their viewpoint or not, I will absolutely support the hard distinction between Israel and the Jewish people, and pushing back against the perpetuation of violence by the Israeli government

They've been called all sorts of things and persecuted by the western media. Primarily in recent years for not wanting to be vaccinated, especially in New York State.
They don't advocate for the joining of government and religion, or forcing others to follow their way of life (see Saudi, Afghanistan, Iran). More importantly, as this video suggests, in Judaism the most orthodox stay away from violence, and in Islam, it's the opposite.

I would love to see an update to this report, what are the numbers in that orthodox military unit now.
Best information I could find is that 68% of Haredi now support the IDF and since the war has ramped up, over 2000 have enlisted. I’d like to see the numbers from when this documentary was put out but that’s harder to come across.

Their objections would seem a lot more justified if they were actually pacifists, from what I understand, they are overwhelmingly supporting conservatives and expansionist policies that bring the country into more direct conflict with their neighbors.

As their population is growing rapidly, many of them are moving to Haredi settlements in the West Bank, but they don't care about the political significance of the region, it's simply because housing there is cheap.
I've seen accounts of the kind violence perpetrated against other Israelis by Haredi. For simply wearing a pair of pants a woman was stoned and then beaten with a board that had nails in it. It of course hospitalized her.

No government assistance is kind of extreme, they could do something like with other countries that have a separation between citizens and permanent residents. So no voting, you can't run for government office (maybe for a community like the Haredis, they can only be allowed to run in districts where they're the majority), and REDUCED but not no government assistance. After all think about it this way - in Israel women serve 1 year less than men, but they don't get any reduced legal benefits because of that.
