Every interview I watch with Seth MacFarland I like him more and more. He just seems like a genuinely nice, respectful, kind, intelligent, and talented individual. I realize respectful seems like a stretch with home many celebrities he bashes on Fam Guy...but when he’s actually sitting down with them he’s always respectful and kind. Watch the interview with Tom Cruise, lol. And you know many times Tiny Tom Cruise appears on family guy lol?

dafttool yeah it’s probably a nervous habit, a lot of celebrities have them. For example, if Adam Sandler is doing an interview with another person, he always touches their knees (this is not a jab at what happened with Claire Foy, this is a legit thing I’ve noticed in several of his interviews)
German here! I have to say I liked "Family Guy" in German, however, I love it in English. The problem as he mentions is that quite a lot of jokes cannot be translated, thus it is often not as funny as the original

Eddie Panedi, you assume that there are not talented voice actors in Germany who can do a good version of it that works. With animated shows its more of a problem of translating the jokes than getting voice actor that can do a fitting voice. Its more of a problem when its not something animated. I generally watch everything in englisch by now and envy other EU countries like Finland that don't dub everything. But sometimes the results aren't that bad and in the case of at least one show, Hogans Heroes, the German dub is a lot, a lot lot lot more fun, they did an amazing job with it.

We don't get all the references and jokes about American pop culture but I think it kind of differs from person to person and their knowledge of movies and stuff that is mentioned on the show. Like I never watched Star wars but because it's mentioned in a lot of American movies I get the references and know the characters.

That´s a little missleading! Yes, both Peter Griffin and Will Smith are dubbed by Jan Odle, but since he disguises his voice for Peter (and maybe Will aswell), it´s not exactly the same voice (tone). It´s the same guy, but a very different tone!

But i think you should be able to infer from context what i meant, since it does not make sense for a given character to have two distinct voices. Therefore it should be clear that with "voice" i mean the voice of the person that does the dubbing.

Family Guy is popular in Germany and Austria. Thanks to competent translators, almost none of the jokes get lost in German. Some have to be written differently to function but it still fits the context.
It's weird how americans always think their jokes don't translate into other languages. Be assured: They do. Most languages in the world are grammatically more complex than english, so everything is possible. I can comment on the german situation: We got a whole industry of voice actors and voice directors & bilingual writers over here doing everything possible to connect 2 complexities of culture/language. They did an amazing job with Family Guy. Other outstanding examples in comedy are Scrubs or Arrested Development. I first watched in english and couldn't believe how perfect the german translation turned out. I speak a few languages and there is a pattern to successfully translate a show: It always works wonderfully translating gramatically simple languages into similar or more complicated languages. The other way around a lot can be lost & has to be replaced. It can wor, but it's hard to save the feeling. Japanese to any other language for example is tough. Watching translated english shows is great, most times its almost as great as the original, or, for example in the case of House MD, almost even better. Beautiful work. Watching translated french or italian shows is great, because their complexity is close to my own language, german. Watching Japanese shows in Korean is great: The complexity is similar. Watching Japanese Shows in German is pretty tough, and watching them in english is rarely a good idea.

Here in Finland we usually have subtitles in all foreign TV shows, the only exceptions being kids shows and yes, sometimes the jokes don't translate well. I fairly often notice that what that person said doesn't really match the translation. For example, sometimes they use a word in English which has multiple meanings and they play around with that, meanwhile in Finnish we have different words and thus the translation seems off. More often the translation lacks some of the nuance the original line has, or they use a direct translation for an idiom instead of an equivalent phrase.
"Shocking Family"(쇼킹 패밀리) was the old title when the show ran in Korea back in 2000. The title was later changed to "Family Guy"(패밀리 가이) when the Koreans decided that the family was not so shocking after all.
When I was a kid I went to Hungary (parents home country) and I was watching the Simpsons with the different voice actors and it was the trippiest thing ever.. lol
That was a spot on of German Peter ;-). I prefer the English ones (espeically for Brian) but I appreciate the German voices as well. They are very well done.

That´s a little missleading! Yes, both Peter Griffin and Will Smith are dubbed by Jan Odle, but since he disguises his voice for Peter (and maybe Will aswell), it´s not exactly the same voice (tone). It´s the same guy, but a very different tone!
c4blew you'right. What i meant is that they use the same person to do voices for peter and characters played by will smith. But i think you should be able to infer from context what i meant, since it does not make sense for a given character to have two distinct voices. Therefore it should be clear that with "voice" i mean the voice of the person that does the dubbing.

Trump's a psychopath. Seen him laugh once or twice, not even a casual chuckle or even a fit of laughs. And I bet he's the kind of person that doesn't listen to music, like casually for enjoyment. Probably doesn't have a music collection just for his entertainment. When he dances he doesn't seem to be enjoying it, just going along with it for the show. I'm very skeptical of people who don't appear to have true emotional reaction to music.

Family Guy is popular in Germany and Austria. Thanks to competent translators, almost none of the jokes get lost in German. Some have to be written differently to function but it still fits the context.
It's weird how americans always think their jokes don't translate into other languages. Be assured: They do. Most languages in the world are grammatically more complex than english, so everything is possible. I can comment on the german situation: We got a whole industry of voice actors and voice directors & bilingual writers over here doing everything possible to connect 2 complexities of culture/language. They did an amazing job with Family Guy. Other outstanding examples in comedy are Scrubs or Arrested Development. I first watched in english and couldn't believe how perfect the german translation turned out.
I speak a few languages and there is a pattern to successfully translate a show: It always works wonderfully translating gramatically simple languages into similar or more complicated languages. The other way around a lot can be lost & has to be replaced. It can wor, but it's hard to save the feeling. Japanese to any other language for example is tough. Watching translated english shows is great, most times its almost as great as the original, or, for example in the case of House MD, almost even better. Beautiful work. Watching translated french or italian shows is great, because their complexity is close to my own language, german. Watching Japanese shows in Korean is great: The complexity is similar. Watching Japanese Shows in German is pretty tough, and watching them in english is rarely a good idea.

Here in Finland we usually have subtitles in all foreign TV shows, the only exceptions being kids shows and yes, sometimes the jokes don't translate well. I fairly often notice that what that person said doesn't really match the translation. For example, sometimes they use a word in English which has multiple meanings and they play around with that, meanwhile in Finnish we have different words and thus the translation seems off. More often the translation lacks some of the nuance the original line has, or they use a direct translation for an idiom instead of an equivalent phrase.
