I think they listened. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is pretty well balanced in that regard, but yeah...the Orville reminds me of something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer in terms of how well it rides that line of self-aware cheese, outright comedy, serious drama and meaningful allegory. The context is different, obviously, but it hits the brain in several spots in a way that feels comparable.

The Orville has turned out to be much more than I expected. I knew that Seth would bring the humor and that he was a huge fan of Star Trek (and other Sci-Fi) but I admit I wasn't sure how he was going to mix that into this series. The latest episode was "Krill" that had repeated silly jokes about car rental companies but a serious, poignant plot about confronting an alien species that doesn't recognize your right to exist. The final scene of this episode certainly echoed the ethical dilemmas faced on the many iterations of Star Trek but most closely Deep Space 9. The show keeps getting better each week as the actors flesh out their characters and we learn more about their universe. I hope that Fox renews The Orville as the series has a lot of potential. Kudos to Seth for making a "Star Trek" series that feels like TOS in many ways.

Sci-fi comedy ain't new to me! Here in Québec, Canada, we had a show like that, called "Dans une galaxie près de chez vous" (In English it would translate to "In a Galaxy Near You", something like that), and it was AMAZING! Ran for 4 seasons and 2 movies, with from what I heard a third one being written! :D
Didn't watch this Orville show yet, but I doubt it'll be the best sci-fi comedy I've ever watched considering how great the one we made is!
(LOL, I love how I'm promoting a Québec show! This is rare, because honestly, Hollywood has one heck of a high bar for outsiders to reach. And yes, we have a bunch of shows in Québec, but few of average Hollywood quality. Lack of resources would do that! But "Dans une galaxie près de chez vous" is one of those show I can promote as a real Québec gem that would be hard to beat! :) Also, all the episodes are on RUclips, if you guys speak French, or are just even curious about what I'm talking about! :p Someone uploaded them, so you guys can look it up!)

MacFarland is uber talented and Myers resents it. The Orville is a lot of fun. Can't wait for the third season!

I saw the first full-length trailer yesterday and saw the Seth MacFarlane 'stamp' on it, which is a lot easier to spot when its creator is its star (although, to be fair I didn't know it was his production till he did the 'loosened it for you' played gag, sorry Seth, you give us originality & I'll applaud it). The 'loosened it' line, sadly, was the only thing that stuck with me overnight, so...I dunno. I'm sure it'll find an audience.
As far as originality in subverting sci fi goes, I'm no Gen Y aficionado or Millennial cosplay blah. I can only think of two off the top of my literally feverish head, Galaxy Quest, which worked pretty well & made $ and Hitchhiker's Guide, which I _love_ although I know the love for that movie is not widespread, mostly because of Poms/Limeys/Brits who hate that Mos Def is Ford. I don't much care, I thought he did well enough and all of it was WAY better than the TV version. Stopping now bye

The irony of MacFarlane doing Norm's voice here, is that he could really do it on the show, too.

I thought Myers was going to explain to McFarlane why people resent Myers. That's the whole reason I clicked on the video. It wasn't a bad watch, but I do want to know why/if people resent Myers.
