I'm an esthetician currently employed by a "franchise" spa and I rarely recommend products from the lines we carry for retail. I love the results in the treatment room, but ingredients are ingredients. I can't justify the markup on the 1 oz. retail products for my clients when there are very good OTC products available for a fraction of the cost. The one thing I emphasize with clients is that unless you are consistently using your home care, you will not benefit from the product, whether it costs $200 or $20.
Omg SAME! I couldn't agree more. But I do recommend like professional grade products - love glymed, circadia, skinscript & their price points are a BIT more realistic. I feel like a hustler when I know they are purchasing a $230 facial and now I'm pushing them to buy 2 $200 serums!? It's just not sustainable. I keep a separate store front where I often direct my clients but I'm pretty sure I would be in trouble if my job found out. Lol. I love skinbetter alpharet. I do suggest most people try one alpharet formulation. But there are soooo many good serums that can be found at more realistic price points. And consistency is the most important part of at home skincare
I really love Skinceutical despite the high price tag for their Vitamin C. Before I invested in myself and started seeing a dermatologist, I have hyperpigmentation around my lips and my skin was very yellow. My dermatologist recommended a routine of HA cleanser, toner, HA, vitamin C, and sunscreen (Elta MD). After 6 months of consistency my skin tone has evened out and I’m absolutely glowing. Also I have started getting Clear and Brilliant to improve my skin texture. I will never stop my skincare routine. Im 34 and I get told I look 24x
PLEAASE do a video on growth factors! Because I’ve been seeing a lot of videos on them and how they are beneficial for the skin but Jesus Christ they are expensive
Thank you, guys!! So informative and love that you continue to recommend same products over time that are science based. I use almost all of them just because of the both of you. I have seen dramatic improvements! You’re my favorite RUclipsrs, and I’m 70!
Hey Dr. Maxfield and Dr. Shah, just wanted to say a huge thanks for all the information you give us in all of your videos! It's been such a blessing in my skincare journey. I've also been going through a rough time in life and just wanted to say that your videos provide great distraction and comfort, so thank you so much.
Elta MD sunscreens are so under-rated on social media! I have tried various sunscreens and I ALWAYS go back to Elta MD's UV Clear Tinted sunscreen. It blends well with my brown skin.. the texture, ingredients, quality etc.. is top tier and literally the best for me.
Actually, inzincable by Dr. V is the best for any person that’s non-Caucasian think me later…. And I’m speaking this as somebody who has tried multiple sunscreens it’s hyper allergenic. It’s a physical sunscreen, which means it’s safe for the most sensitive of skins plus is the only physical sunscreen that’s not gonna leave a cast on your face it’s gonna fade in less than 10 minutes… its tinted, spf 50, PA+++
I noticed a lot of these "empty" terms are used solely for marketing, such as *genuine* leather -- which refers to it being real leather, which is true, but the majority of the time it's poor quality split leather. Or military grade, which are usually poor quality items that are mass produced. It definitely is confusing and can be countered by the individual if they are aware, so I appreciate the video!
Another very interesting video! 😊Thank you both so much! I would love for you to dedicate a series to treatments for darker skin types (phototypes 4-5-6). I live in a country where dermatologists know almost nothing about the specificity of my skin and I have to work hard in order to educate myself and make the right choices. Also, if you can, please share your thoughts on skincare products that are also available in Europe. ☺ Thanks again for your time and for your great content! Your channel and podcast are so unique. I've learned so much with you and am very grateful to you both. 🥰

My aesthetician gave me a few samples of SkinCeuticals vitamin C. Honestly, it didn’t wow me. I don’t think it worked any better then the Drunk Elephant I was using. I can’t justify the price. I use Timeless vitamin C now and it has the same ingredients for a fraction of the price. I agree with you on the Elta MD sunscreen. It goes on beautifully and it doesn’t feel greasy or sticky. Some days I just wear that, concealer and blush.
Drunk elephant got sued for their vitamin C by skinceuticals because it's basically identical. Timeless haven't but theirs is basically identical too. I use skinceuticals but you definitely don't need to, I think the others work just as well.
Same. I bit the bullet and got the 177 euro full bottle. I've been using it for a month now and I don't see any difference compared to the Paula's Choice 15% vitC serum. I don't regret it though, it's always fine to try different things. Paula is cruelty free too, so I'm switching back to her VitC after I finish the skinceuticals.
Great Video!! I do love the Skinbetter Alpha Ret, but another line that I have fallen in love with is COSRX. I loved the snail muscin and saw the Face wash in Marshall's. It was like $9 bucks. I have Mac and Perricone Md at home and I LOVE COSRX. I've now added the moisturizer and toner. I would never have thought such an inexpensive product would give me better results than my products from the medispa.
I love Elta MD's enzymatic cleanser. It's my very favorite. It's like no other cleanser I've ever used and is never drying but not heavy handed on moisturizers either.
My husband and I (both in our late 60's) use the Maelove Glow Maker Vit. C and love it. We have both been using it every morning for several years and can both see the difference it makes in our skin. It is pretty much a dupe for the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, but at a fraction (about 20%) of the price.
Thank you for educating me. Although I have access to great medical insurance and see a dermatologist, I appreciate your focus on quality products. You also consider price points for those of us who may not be able to afford some great products (or save us money from buying into the marketing). I value your expertise and appreciate this educational video so much!
My dermatologist gave me a skin care routine using the Australian pharmacy brand QV, inexpensive available at every pharmacy it’s a sensitive skin focussed range, she also gave me a goodie bag of samples, I’ve used the same products and same routine for over 3 years and best skin ever, my skin can even tolerate vitamin A now 😀 the simple inexpensive routine has saved my so much money which I can spend on treatments.
Thank you! I well remember when I could only get specific brands from specific med spas, etc. I didn’t realize it is no longer a ‘thing’ and that other brands have used that fact to jump on the bandwagon themselves and adopted the term, “medical Grade”.
I bought he Skinceutical CE Ferulic serum twice and halfway through the bottle, it changed color and oxidized. Back then they were advising against using after it oxidized. I did email them and asked if they considered changing the packaging to a pump instead of dropper..
To slow down the oxidization, it's important that you keep it in the fridge (if you're not doing so already). It is inevitably going to start to turn yellow as you are using it. This begins as soon as you open the bottle and expose it to air. One bottle should last 3-4 months. It is still fine to use even when it has started to turn yellow. It has not lost all of its potency until it turns brown. A lemon yellow colour is still good to use. Don't throw it away!

I also love drugstore as well but I do believe there’s a huge difference. Now the items sold in Sephora like drunk elephant and such I just don’t know. A topic I would like to see discussed is the skin care that is sold from independent aestheticians that has been formulated and a label is created for their business to sell. I enjoy giving my aesthetician business and would like to support her by purchasing an item or two here and there. But when researching some of these products there isn't much available to read. I am sure she did her homework on the products she sells. But in a world of cosmetic transparency I do my homework before I make a purchase. I just cannot find any literature or information (or very little) on these products. Like I said, I want to support here. However, I also want reassurance that I am getting a product that will produce the results she claims it does. Thank you for considering this topic for a future video. I enjoy your content.
Thanks for your videos. Always love watching you two and becoming better educated -- especially since it's almost impossible to see a dermatologist up here in Canada. 🙄 I'd love to hear your thoughts on the ZO skin care line. Thanks again!
Been watching you guys for more than 2 years and you guys are always on point and supportive! Keep up the work and by the way, could you make a video about Obagi Medical and specifically about their retinoids? Thank you so much!!
I appreciate what I have learned from you guys! It has been so helpful! Would you also consider doing videos talking about: How to avoid ingrown beard hairs for African American men? What are the differences in having procedures done at a med spa vs. a dermatologist? What is the difference between treating a scar and treating a stretch mark? What are the different lasers and machines available in skin care, what do they do?
I’m using the Vivier Radiance Serum. I paid $175 for it and I was extremely sceptical. I was shocked by how effective it is. I saw an improvement in my skin overnight! I purchased it Saturday afternoon and woke up Sunday morning to a glowing, smoother, more even complexion. I’d tried costlier brands before, and was disappointed, but this serum is incredible!
Love you both, really appreciate how professional & honest you are! Very clever insights & btw, you are both so handsome too ;) love your genuine smiles too!
6:09 thank you for recommending OTC products in addition to other more expensive items that are only sold through medical offices/spas...it equalizes information and access.
Thanks, Dr. Shaw and Dr. Maxfield! I’ve been using the DRMTLGY line for years now, and my skin is amazing for a 58 year-old! That tinted sunscreen is magical!
OK this is off-topic. I just wanted to comment on videos because I have. Thank you, I have been going to dermatologist for the past 10 years I started suffering from bad acne in my teens and early 20s. . I was just given harsh chemicals that really dried out my skin and make things way worse. I was diagnosed with PCOS three years ago so realize that my hormones had a lot to do with my acne. Got my diet under control. I still have bad scars, big pores, blemishes, and really rough facial skin, because what she has videos I came up with a regimen for my skin type , & scars it’s been two months and I’ve never seen my complexion this clear. Thank you so so much for what y’all are doing!
Outstanding video!! Im glad you're breaking it down for the masses. Ive tried them all and youre absolutely right, it all depends on your needs and the components that work for you and can definitely be bought at different price points.
Sorry, not paying 300. For 1 product as too many others out there. Unless covered by my insurance. Every person is different. Thanks Both of you!!!! ❤love watching you two ! Seriously
Could you do a review video on ZO Skin Health products please? I’m seeing these products in many different locations (medspa facilities & dermatology offices) recently.
I use the Zo Hydrating Facial Cleanser. It cleans my skin without making it feel dry and itchy. I buy it at my aesthetician’s office. You only need a tiny bit so it lasts a long time. It’s a little pricey but I like how it feels on my skin.
Personally, I avoid " medical grade" products due to not being regulated and the cost. I've been able to find great skincare at lower to reasonable prices. Also, shop the sales for products you use and stock up. Love you guys! ❤❤
Not all "medical grade" are the same as not all products are created equal. I focus on "medical grade" skincare with the brands who has long history on creating products baeds on sience, testing those products and showing with proves ( tests, fotos) actually the difference what can make on the skin. You dont pay just for the ingreients but also for the work, sience, tests and actually prove that it works. Thats why I focus on Mesoestetic, Skinceuticals, IS Clinical, Dermaceutic and Neostrata.
@@p3tr02oo6I disagree, as this video points out, Vichy and L’Oréal take great care in their clinical studies. In fact L’Oréal owns some of these medical grade brands.

I am also longing for the day that you make a vitamin C video. I am looking for one for mature skin right now for a customer of mine. There are a few on the market but nothing that really satisfies all of her needs
My hair looks infinitely better when I use professional products.. I hate it for it to be true, but I know by result. I’ve tried plenty of drugstore formulations, and did not get the results I wanted. At my age I found certain products and ingredients that were good for me. Unfortunately, they’re not exactly inexpensive.
Same here. I would rather find ways to use less amount of products than to use drugstores ones. And what you had experienced was confirmed, on one the videos on the Blow out Professor's RUclips channel. Chris is a professional hair dresser and an expert on his field
I’m currently using Skincueticals Vitamin C Slytherin. love how bright my skin looks, BUT I have had a couple cystic break outs that i have not experienced in a year 😢
Skinbetter saved my skin. The alpharet clearing serum is a miracle worker. Trent broke me out so bad for over a year and this stuff helped within weeks!
Science versus did a podcast on skincare, and anti-aging and basically proved that vitamin C just sits on the surface of your skin, and at the end of the day just washes off, providing no benefit.. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that!
Love your videos! Question: could you please do a video about growth factors? I have spent a small fortune buying AnteAGE products, but I don’t know if it’s worth it. Do growth factors work? What exactly do they do? How should you work them into a routine? Are there other brands/products you recommend? THANKS!
Some items in a doctors office are for sale and not prescriptions in Dermatology. It’s where I found Elta MD sunscreen. It’s great with lot of choices for type.
I use AlphaRet and Trio from skin Better and I love it. I also use Skin Ceauticals C E ferrulic , I tried different vitamin C and just didn’t like it at all. So I went back to Sin Ceauticals
hi dr. max & dr. shah! was curious if you'd be willing to make a video or yt short on skin, hair, acne and hard water vs. soft/distilled water and just water ph in general. very informative vid as always! ❤
The water in my house is very hard, and it's reflected in my hair, skin, laundry. We are getting a whole house water softener installed but this is a good topic for a lot of folks.
Good info!! Your videos usually only cover products for your face (some others “body”)… what about (specially women) the neck and chest area. U don’t want my face to look off from these other two areas as I age. i.e. loose skin, neck lines, hyperpigmentation (neck very sensitive) etc. thanks!
About SkinCeuticals, the classic CE Ferulic was too strong for me. It made my skin so red. However, their Phloretin CF is fabulous. I use it every day with no issues. And I don't mind the smell, either! It kind of reminds me of coffee.
Do you have any videos on the Augustine Bader line, that Victoria Beckham is partnering with? I called their customer service line to ask for access to their research reports because the website findings were far too vague. I was given a standoffish respond…”we don’t give that info out”. That response, the limited info on the almost perfect success rates, along with the heafty price tag for a product made from “a cliché scientist in a bow tie”, along with the online satisfaction ratings looking far below the levels claimed in the study findings was enough for me to judge this product just marketing hype. I will admit the Victoria Beckham signature of approval was the bait that gotten me interested at first.
I saw an aestheticians video that claimed that medical grade skin care is superior to drug store brands because of the delivery of the product is better with medical grade lines. She used the example of after washing your face with OTC brands your face feels dry and tight because the actual product wasn’t “delivered” opposed to using medical grade lines you don’t get that tightness after washing your face. Do you agree with this or do you think she just found something that worked better for her??
I would love to see if you could take excellent products that are not affordable then tell us what combo of affordable products could give same results or close!
Do you guys have any recommendations for sunscreens that aren't oily or greasy? As an oily skin girlie, I have a hard time finding products that don't end up making my skin shinier over time.
Is there much information on what brands release a high quantity and quality of research? If clinical research is the customer-assumed distinction of what "medical-grade" should be... perhaps you could make a "tier list" based on research data, various skincare companies have publicized??? 🤔
MoCRA is going to be a mess for those labs who aren't getting their clients ready. January 1 will be a different landscape on all the the shelves. Please do a video on that, many brands will be out of business because if it. It would be nice for consumers to know.
I have easily irritated skin and use baby skin care for eczema. Its really effective and really inexpensive. I hate the excessive cost of medical grade stuff.

@@jessicasalinas2576 yes and she told me no it’s not normal to have your skin flaking like severe dandruff for weeks and months on end. So yeah my skin couldn’t handle it yet and it can handle Alpharet.
I think labeling something "medical grade" is a ploy to inflate the price of regular ingredients to make more money. It is meaningless. I feel like anyone or any company that uses the term is trying to rip me off.

6:09 thank you for recommending OTC products in addition to other more expensive items that are only sold through medical offices/spas...it equalizes information and access.
Would you mind doing a video for the ultimate dry skin care routine and the ultimate sensitive skin care routine? I need a starting point. Thanks!
Would love you guys to review NIOD (sis line to The Ordinary) they have a very unique brand and would love to know what you think of their products! ❤
That would be great!
My favourtie products lately are from Skinmedica (retinol, scar gel, HA5), Vichy (hyaluronic gel, salicyclic cream), and skinceuticals C and E serum.
Love your videos!Would you make a video on products to use for hyperpigmentation on skin of color?
You could out Dr Alexis Stephens, a derm who specializes in darker skin types (4-6). There's also brown skin derm and taraMD (she focuses on sunscreens). In the UK, there Dr. Simi Adedeji. And there are esties like LaBeautyologist.
Yea for my hair products too and straightener and blow dryer. My hair has been softer and more tamed
@@oceaneo4603 i’ll have to check him out. My mom used to call it money down the drain and then she tried it so… then she was buying it. ;)
@@JJ.___. mine too. ❤️
I’m currently using Skincueticals Vitamin C Slytherin. love how bright my skin looks, BUT I have had a couple cystic break outs that i have not experienced in a year 😢
Well I love my tretinoin of course. That's great. But the CE ferulic, omg obsessed with it. I love it.
Would love to hear your thoughts on clear stem products! Thanks for the info 👏🏼
Yes clearstem!
Already using 3 out of 4 products mentioned. I love every single one on my skin.
Skin better is fantastic. Their trio moisturizer is chefs kiss
I use AlphaRet and Trio from skin Better and I love it. I also use Skin Ceauticals C E ferrulic , I tried different vitamin C and just didn’t like it at all. So I went back to Sin Ceauticals
What about Zo skin health by Zein Obagi MD is it worth the money?
Dermalogica and Murad were among the handful of top skin care products 25 years ago. I used to scrape my paychecks together to buy them. 😅
hi dr. max & dr. shah! was curious if you'd be willing to make a video or yt short on skin, hair, acne and hard water vs. soft/distilled water and just water ph in general. very informative vid as always! ❤
The water in my house is very hard, and it's reflected in my hair, skin, laundry. We are getting a whole house water softener installed but this is a good topic for a lot of folks.
Question . Dermatica has Azelaic acid 20%, I can just buy online easily on it's own.
I buy this product also but often wonder if it actually is 20% as they sell on Amazon
@@ang3956 I bought mine from Dermatica
Vivier Skin C E Peptides is heavily researched and is so much better then any other on the market ...in my opinion
Thank you for providing this clarifying info!
I would love to get your opinion on some of the mad hippie products.
Good info!! Your videos usually only cover products for your face (some others “body”)… what about (specially women) the neck and chest area. U don’t want my face to look off from these other two areas as I age. i.e. loose skin, neck lines, hyperpigmentation (neck very sensitive) etc. thanks!
I've been loving the Skinbetter Science Alpharet and One Skin OS-01 Eye Topical Supplement.
About time 😂🤣😂. You need to do daily videos.
Another great video! What are your thoughts on the Colorescience tinted sunscreens?
You book look nice. Thanks for the video.
Missed you both ❤
About SkinCeuticals, the classic CE Ferulic was too strong for me. It made my skin so red. However, their Phloretin CF is fabulous. I use it every day with no issues. And I don't mind the smell, either! It kind of reminds me of coffee.
@kendallstark4302 hi , l used ce too and it irritated my skin do you recommend phloretin? What it did for your skin ? What is the benefits please
@@ritasharqawi7367 yes I switched to Phloretin CF and it was a lot better for me
Great as always! Do y'all have any thoughts/ recommendations for face oils? Is it even a worthwhile step?
Dr. Maxfield: Vitamin C bread-like smell.
Me: This man has been inhaling something other than bread! 🤣🤣🤣
Hi, I became a fan of your videos! Could you make one explaining exosomes?
I love the Skinceuticals vitamin C products ❤️
Hi! Can you guys review at home lasers such as the Nira and Lyma?
You both should make a LINE SAFE DERMATOLOGIST AND REAL MEDICAL GRADE AFFORDABLE GOOD SKINCARE THAT WORKS ❤ YA BOTH KEEP US LAUGHING KEEP IT REAL!!
I have been watching your videos for long time and really enjoy the information you guys provide❤. Can you guys please talk more about TCA CROSS?
I use the ordinary things and it's improved my skin . No need for expensive stuff that does the same thing imo
LOVE DRMTLGY! I think they white label their products for medspas.
Thank you for your advice!🥰
Could you talk about Emminence products. My esthetician loves this line
In Canada too. You need a prescription for Tretinoin, I assume you would also for the others.
What do you guys think of Musely products?
The prescriptions are worth it, but not stuff like vitamin c and Skinceuticles imo
Do you guys have any recommendations for sunscreens that aren't oily or greasy? As an oily skin girlie, I have a hard time finding products that don't end up making my skin shinier over time.
Try Beauty of Joseon. Relief sun spf 50+ PA++++. It’s great sunscreen and affordable prize.
Thanks for the explanation
Is there much information on what brands release a high quantity and quality of research?
If clinical research is the customer-assumed distinction of what "medical-grade" should be... perhaps you could make a "tier list" based on research data, various skincare companies have publicized??? 🤔
MoCRA is going to be a mess for those labs who aren't getting their clients ready. January 1 will be a different landscape on all the the shelves. Please do a video on that, many brands will be out of business because if it. It would be nice for consumers to know.
Please make video on physical sunscreen
4:18 The thinker...
I love drmtlgy products ❤my complexion has thanked me😊
more on pregnancy skin care routine please
Find yourself somebody who looks at you like Dr.Maxfield looks at Dr.Shah
I have easily irritated skin and use baby skin care for eczema. Its really effective and really inexpensive. I hate the excessive cost of medical grade stuff.
I received an Obaji sample and it was so fragranced with citrus oils that I had to wash it off immediately.
My derm recommended alpharet after my skin just couldn’t handle tretinoin and flaked for days. It really does work for my sensitive skin. It’s nice that more derms like it considering it is pricey 😅
That is an anticipated reaction. Did your derm go over this? That's completely normal when getting adjusted to retinol
Good video - Thanks
I’d love to get your thoughts on the bondi sands skincare, they are australian made, affordable and seem to be pretty effective but would love for you to check them out! :)
Are they suitable for Indian climate?
Thank you!
The tension I just
