Thanks so much cool cats R us!! explained it in so much detail, the behind shots were very handy! I can now complete the advanced mashed potato very confidently! Thanks!!!
For people who didn't grow up with it like I did, it would be helpful to see it up to speed with the right music. Thanks for the slow motion instructions, though.
I expected more of some old guy posting & starring in this video. Someone who was alive way back then & has accolades in performing this dance during the whole bobby socks, jitterbug & mashed potatoes craze.
These videos rock my face off! Seriously I'm a singer in a 60's 70's funk band ...and I had no idea what the Mashed Potato , the Jerk, the Fly or the 'Monkey' was but now I know! Hilariously Awesome like Abby Said!... Thank you,
This video helped me figure out what they were doing in dirty dancing - I never knew what the mashed potato was! Until now - thanks so much for giving me a 180 degree view of this awesome dance. Can we dance sometime? ;)
That's what I remember - lots of footwork. It was fun. I wish you had added the music and danced to it after demonstrating how to do the dance. Thanks!
This looks a bit different than the way my dance lovin' mother, who was a teen when the dance came out in the 60s, does it. Not necessarily saying the video is wrong, BUT I think I'll stick with the way my mother does it considering she was actually alive during the mashed potato dance craze.
Ha, wow. In Cleveland did this footwork in the early 2000s and called it "The Down The Way". Out of Cincinatti. Funny how things repeat. Been listening to mad James Brown the past couple years had to check out The Mashed Potato B)
theres a variation where you do exactly this, while bringing one foot infront or behind the other. is that called something different or is it just a stylistic difference?
I think you are referring to the 1920's Charleston. You see it the more modern shuffle dances as well. Here is a video of mine of it. ruclips.net/video/TyXkClJzrUc/видео.html
I loved this dance way back and I would ask my aunt who was a teen in the early 60's how to do the mashed potato and she said you basically twist with your feet. You are fantastic--just like they did in the 1988 movie "Hairspray".
No ... no ... no ... I grew up with Dee Dee Sharp. We're both from Philly. That is not how we did the mashed potato. There should be the actual song playing, to get the real feel for the dance.
@@brendawilson8208 YES!! YES YES!! YES YES YES!! The ORIGINATORS of all these various dances - particularly from the '60s (or '70s, or '80s, or '90s.. so on & so forth) - are ALWAYS the BEST at them - no matter what era!!! So I'm here cause I'm failing at this big time for a required musical theatre project this semester... So here I am at 11pm on a Saturday and I just made the mistake of trying this barefoot and on carpet. Ouch.
i would say anything that looks natural.. so practice in the mirror till you find you comfort zone !! or just bring your hands in and out slightly crossing them that looks pretty good in my opinion
Ive mastered the mashed potatoe and many other old dances on my first try since a teen! Its crazy cuz im the youngest of 3 sisters and they cant do any of the old dances. People tell me its bevause I have an Old soul so it comes naturally 💕

I am learning this for "Do you love me" by The Countours

You're just missing the twist now
Yeah
Thats the only reason I looked it up myself 😂

I keep waiting to hear his mom yell from another room, "You bes' not be scratching up my wood floors filming your dance moves for the internets!"

WAS NOT EXPECTING TO RELATE TO ANY OF THESE COMMENTS
People years ago: In 2020, flying cars will be mainstream.
2020: Boston Dynamics’ robots can mash-potato dance.
Me: I’m not even mad.
now raise your arms like a zombie, and you've got the monster mash... literally, that's the dance that goes with the song.
That's actually what brought me here lol
no coincidence, the Monster Mash was a parody of the Mashed Potato
Monster Mash is Not a dance that go with the Mash Potato dance smh
When I was younger, I could dance for hours and still have energy. At 67 this would sure be good for me to do to build up more stamina.
Get it!
