Philip Peeples with his unparalleled train beat on "Jesus Loves You," the second song in this here show. That's what has always made the old 97s run on time.
I discovered them by total accident back in 1997. Remember those ads in magazines for music clubs like Columbia House & BMG, where they'd be like "Get 10 C.D.'s For Only 1 Cent!"? I did one of those, but when I got to the 10th pick I couldn't find anything else I liked. I saw their name, and since it was 1997 I thought might as well 🤷🏽♂️ "Too Far To Care" ended up being one of my favorite albums to this day!
Robert B: And here we go with the now obligatory and cringe worthy "underrated" comment whilst every other comment is proving you wrong. Please explain who is underrating them?
His solo album "I Don't Know Where I'm Going But I'm On My Way" is my current favorite album to listen to at work! I was also stunned to learn that he was married to famous cartoon voice actress, Grey DeLisle-Griffin! They still do musical collaborations!
I listened to their most recent album and couldn't really get into it. Do any of their fans have recs of their favorite Old 97's songs? I don't want to dismiss them completely
Listen to the Album "Too Far to Care". It sorta, to me, is the quintessence of this band. Salome is one of my favorite songs ever by any band. Niteclub is a good representation of their rocking shit. ALl points in between are pretty well represented on that album and it's just an all around amazing record and helps makes the twenty years that followed make more sense.
My favorites are their early releases before signing to a major label. "Hitchhike to Rhome" and "Wreck Your Life" - very much more an alt country flavor. But all the albums mentioned here are good.
Great songs off a really good album. They need a better mic on the crowd at the new studio; you can tell they're applauding but can't hear it, which makes it look like the band is flat.
I will go and listen to Bad Luck Charms. Just cuz you say it's the best song on this album. I'm like the okrajoe.... I could never not like the Old 97s.

One of the best bands ever to do it
This was an absolute treat!! Great performance and fantastic recording!
One of the most imporyant bands of life that keeps growing longer.
i love them just the same as when i stumbled across them in downtown Detroit in a hole in the wall in 97. Followed them ever since.
Where the hell have I been? I just discovered the Old 97’s thanks to an episode of Friday Night Lights. LOL Great music! Lawd!
Better late than never!

Was it when Julie asked if she could go to their show but didn’t end up going?
Loved this band since that first PopCulture Press sampler CD back in oddly enough in 97.
We found them on their
Austin City Limits performance 1/26/98. Watch in on RUclips.
@@jeffcullen7142 I saw that one recently. That was fun.
Discovered these fine musicians from an Amoeba epusidw of "What's in my vag" with James Gunn. Thank youuuu Mr. Gunn for your excellent musical tastes!

That strum at 4:26 is amazing lol
I don't know if I've ever wanted anything more than I want Rhett's shirt....
Murray is never miked high enough--neither his bass nor his voice. More Murray, please.

Thanks!
Please, listen to "Satellite Rides"...their best on my humble opinion.
Too Far to Care, Satellite Rides, can't go wrong with either. Great albums. Pick up the live album Alive and Wired for a good taste as well.

Where the heck is Phil?
He mentioned that he smashed his face in a parking lot accident and will be back

Thats Fillip !! (Fake Phillip)
Let me introduce to you
The one and only Fillip Shears
Bad luck charms the best song. Not their best album, but these were the more decent songs on it.
I will go and listen to Bad Luck Charms. Just cuz you say it's the best song on this album. I'm like the okrajoe.... I could never not like the Old 97s.
I think the sub on drums is their guitar tech.
I walked by this concert, AND KEPT WALKING.

Well guess what? Murry Hammond the bass player was married to Daphne's voice actress Grey DeLisle Griffin for 8 years and they have a son named Tex!
misanthrope alcoholic...it's not an easy path.
First, you shouldn't judge people by the way they look...
Second, anyone with a haircut like that is mandatorily a tool.
I don't need to see your bald head to know you are a tool
