i owned a bar in louisville at this time. couple dudes who played in a local band tipped us off to this because no one had an idea who they were. whole place got quiet and gathered around the tv's to watch some local boys do work. we were all high fiving and i got a round for everyone after they finished.
Same here. Immediately bought the album and tickets to their show in LA. I’ve seen them about a dozen times since and just got tickets for a show in September.
Finally... a version of this in HD! Still the benchmark for how good a band's TV debut can be. They left it all out there. My jaw was on the floor when I saw this on Conan that night... immediately bought tickets when they came through Omaha in 2004 and have seen them too many times to count since then.
hell yeah man. i agree. the quality of the one that's been on here for years was shabby. Finally get to see this in HD. Gotta be one of the best late night performances of all time. Hands down.
Matthew Vande that's so crazy! I saw this live as well, and was floored. I couldn't believe the energy that was coming from the T.V., having spent the last four years of college being bored shitless by everyone playing Phish and DMB 24/7. Bought tickets, and headed to Omaha to the Sokol Underground. Amazing show. They played the set backwards, and Jim had a fake parrot on his shoulder all night. I was so overwhelmed I had a panic attack (I didn't know I could get them at the time). Still a great night.
Still the most impactful concert I have ever attended. Still kicking myself for not grabbing the show poster... only 20 printed. I did buy the Acoustic Citsuoca tour CD for $5 and got to do the band meet and greet after the show. Probably the most down to earth and nicest band I've ever had the pleasure to talk to...
are you me? I am also from Omaha, and also saw this performance which blew me away, and then immediately bought tickets to see them live! Seeing this was mind-blowing, seeing them live was even better. :)
After the last commercial break, just before the send-off and credits, Conan was still gushing about their performance while holding up a copy of their newest album. He said something to the effect of "talk about giving 110%!" I wish that clip was available.
Watched it live as well but it's been so long that I forget the end. But always remembered after the performance Conan saying "I am buying that record!". So good!
I have it on VHS somewhere. I always taped Conan cause if something amazing happened, it was usually on Conan. What's even more amazing, they're still doing awesome shit 20 years later;
After a show, I went up to Carl and said 'Wow, you guys rock'. I held out the CD and asked 'Can I have your autograph man"? And he bowed his head a bit, turned his toes in little and did 'aw shucks-golly-gee mister thank you' thing and signed it. All of them conveyed a real deep appreciation for coming. It wasn't phony at all. Then Bo invited us outside for a smoke. (Just cigs) Was talking to all of us like we family. MMJ is good people.
On the It Still Moves tour, they were all just hanging around outside after the show happily signing stuff and were extremely friendly and grateful. 100% genuine.
This performance was how I was introduced to MMJ. It was one of the most excited reactions I've seen Conan have to a musical guest, and I totally felt the same way.
If you're a fan of music you HAVE to see these guys live, I saw my first show in 2004 and there is not another band who can make your soul cry happiness like a 3 hour MMJ show can...
Mouhamad Adoure-Zehaim whole-heartedly agree! I just saw them for the first time last October and it changed my life. These boys are everything to me. Such talent.
Caught them at Stubbs in Austin in ‘06 by total accident. Big music fan overall but had never heard of them and bought tickets on a whim. They opened with this one. My word. Mercy me. In love since.
When a band writes a couple songs like "Golden" "One Big Holiday" "Wordless Chorus" and so on, I'll check out what you they do until they are no longer making music, as they made such an impression
Talk about a magic moment. I'm not even a fan of My Morning Jacket, but I never forgot this performance, and when I randomly thought of it all these years later, I see from the comment section that it left an indelible mark on other people as well. I even remember people online discussing it at the time, which I can't recall for any other musical guest on Conan O'Brien. These guys got a chance to show their stuff, and they made the most of it.
Go to a jacket show and you’ll be a fan. They absolutely shred live. 20 years later and they are musically on another level now days. They will go down as one of the greats when it’s all done.
I remember watching this live. I was 32 and was like hell yes rock is back! I also went out and bought it the next day Conan. It was totally different from what i was expecting. But I loved it. Run Thru is still my favorite song to this day.
Me too! Stumbled up to this show, not knowing a thing about them. Let's just say their vibe immediately and perfectly meshed with my vibe at that moment. Been a huge fan ever since!
When I first saw this I was blown away. I saw it live on TV also. I recall telling a lot of friends and family about mmj and none of them had ever heard of them. Now they are certainly one of the most well known bands in America, so it feels really good to be one of the earlier fans. Then again , I truly believe this clip had a major impact on their career. Every. Single. Person. Who saw this live became a fan. Every person with any blood flowing through their veins at least. Fucking classic live performance . Top 10 in the history of rock and roll on late night without a doubt. Perhaps top 5. Makes you excited to be alive.
Such an amazing performance. It's as if they felt they were all on their deathbed and this would be their last opportunity to share with the world what they love to do. Incredibly inspiring.
I remember seeing this performance back in 2003, and being blown away. I got a copy as soon as I could and would drive around for what seems like hours and play the solo on repeat! So good!
I don’t think that people realize the impact Conan had on the music industry. He regularly put on great musicians that weren’t necessarily getting booked on other shows. Many of them went on to be huge.
I must've seen this video a thousand times over the years and for the first time I realized the frontman is bare foot. If it couldn't get any cooler. Conan's reaction kept bringing me back. This is a special performance. And a shout out to the drummer. He kept this blitzkrieg of Americana in order. Without drummers we have anarchy.
Saw this performance during my freshman year of college and have been a lifelong fan ever since. Still, when the topic of "my favorite" bands comes up, as difficult a question as that is to answer, MMJ is always on the list somewhere. I think I feel what must be the 175th "MMJ phase" of my life coming on. I had a craving for "Strangulation" last night. That's all it takes to pull me back in!
Wow. Pretty much a HQ reupload of the 2006 upload that got me into this band. That was 10 years ago now. I always loved watching Conan but I only was ever introduced to this bands a year later or so on youtube with this performance. Since then theyv'e been a favorite of mine. I'm speechless as to how you got this, but God Bless.
WOW, had never seen this before. They KILLED it, man I wish I could have caught this back then. Seen em 10 or 11 times since 06 though! Cant wait to see how they follow up The Waterfall.
When the hell was this? In analog/digital time. While watching tv one night I got to experience this all time performance. I remember trying to find the song with no understanding of the band that played it, my face was melted off. I had no pause or rewind. I went on an early internet search to find out. Finally found some fans who said you must be referring to one big holiday, and I was made to feel like I wasn’t an original fan page chat room regular. And I wasn’t. Greatest talk show performance I ever did see. Also made a point to catch them at the Newport folk festival. Rock in socks
I remember sharing this with my boss and she was like you listen to weird shit, and feeling so proud that was her response knowing she was younger than me.
GODDAMN!!! Every time I get jaded about the state of today's so-called music, these guys always give me hope!! And always helps that Patrick Hallahan is a fucking beast!!!!!!!
brandon242 one of the writers for the show had a religious experience at one of their legendary bonnaroo shows. thats why they ended up on american dad.
Almost 20 years later and I still regularly come back and watch this. One of the all time iconic late night performances.
Me too.
I happened on this live when it first aired and had never heard of them. Still in love to this day.
Same!
Time again to see that Solo headbob
The was the first time I heard them and immediately bought their cd.
Saw this live on Conan back in 2003 and it blew my mind. 19 years later and it still does.
i owned a bar in louisville at this time. couple dudes who played in a local band tipped us off to this because no one had an idea who they were. whole place got quiet and gathered around the tv's to watch some local boys do work. we were all high fiving and i got a round for everyone after they finished.
@Travis Edwards yessir! Louisville is a tight community. Love my hometown!
This was the moment I knew good music still existed. Immediately changed my life in 2003.
tajmccall ........aaaaaamen.
Same here. Immediately bought the album and tickets to their show in LA. I’ve seen them about a dozen times since and just got tickets for a show in September.
A tip : you can watch series at Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Dante Kyle yup, I have been using Flixzone for since november myself :)
@Dante Kyle yup, I've been using Flixzone for since november myself =)
That pine tree rocks out pretty hard
I love this band, look how hard they are going here! Conan is speechless!
They were ON. It doesn't get better.
Buying that record was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
😂😂😂 hell ya !
Also, like how the lead and rhythm guitarists interchange the solos and riffs. Conan was even blow away!
Wow!! Conan does not react so candidly … he basically was speechless… that was the best live performance ever done live on any talk show !
Pearl Jam on Letterman is much better

Conan knows his stuff alright
I have it on VHS somewhere. I always taped Conan cause if something amazing happened, it was usually on Conan. What's even more amazing, they're still doing awesome shit 20 years later;
As a guitar player himself, Conan must have absolutely loved this
After a show, I went up to Carl and said 'Wow, you guys rock'.
I held out the CD and asked 'Can I have your autograph man"?

Just seeing this now but have had a similar experience - Bo and Tom were especially nice
Best Conan late night performance of all time. I saw them on the It Still Moves tour @ the Avalon in Boston, probably the best show I’ve ever seen.
This performance was how I was introduced to MMJ. It was one of the most excited reactions I've seen Conan have to a musical guest, and I totally felt the same way.

Matthew Martin good for you my friend! I'm so thrilled when I hear people enjoy the sweet sounds of Jim & Co.!!
If they ever get around to doing a Canadian tour, I'm in.
So true. Just saw them last week. Front row. They sound better than ever.
I heard they aren't playing live anymore
Caught them at Stubbs in Austin in ‘06 by total accident. Big music fan overall but had never heard of them and bought tickets on a whim. They opened with this one. My word. Mercy me. In love since.
This will always be my favorite version of my favorite song.
Damn I've been sleeping on this band! This is great...
possibly the greatest live tv performance by a band. patrick is a monster!
Underrated drummer
This was the first time I saw, or heard of, MMJ. This was all it took.
mhmmm
When a band writes a couple songs like "Golden" "One Big Holiday" "Wordless Chorus" and so on, I'll check out what you they do until they are no longer making music, as they made such an impression
Same. It blew me away. I think I had purchased It still moves within the next 10 hours after seeing this.
Talk about a magic moment. I'm not even a fan of My Morning Jacket, but I never forgot this performance, and when I randomly thought of it all these years later, I see from the comment section that it left an indelible mark on other people as well. Wow this song and the performance was powerful
More known for the softer, even angelic side to his voice, I still have to say, they do make an excellent Hair band.
Much like Conan, I saw this and immediately became a lifelong fan...
I only discovered this band because of American Dad when Stan Smith was obsessed with this band! Haha. I’m glad I found them
I remember watching this live. I was 32 and was like hell yes rock is back! I also went out and bought it the next day Conan. It was totally different from what i was expecting. But I loved it. Run Thru is still my favorite song to this day.
Good Lord what a songwriter Jim James is 👑
One of the greatest music performances on TV of all time
Saw them at Bonnaroo. one of the best live shows I've heard, legendary performance. It's was about to storm but no one wanted to leave
Saw them at XPonential, torrential rain for the entire set. OBH in a storm is pretty damn epic.
Me too! Stumbled up to this show, not knowing a thing about them. Let's just say their vibe immediately and perfectly meshed with my vibe at that moment. Been a huge fan ever since!
One Big Performance! The best rock band over the past 15 years!
When I first saw this I was blown away. I saw it live on TV also. I recall telling a lot of friends and family about mmj and none of them had ever heard of them. Fucking classic live performance . Top 10 in the history of rock and roll on late night without a doubt. Perhaps top 5. Makes you excited to be alive.
Jim’s hair is next level awesome. They played a shortened version and it’s still nearly 5 minutes and Conan’s reaction is great lol love em!
This performance was so damn good I went and bought the album the next day.
Been to two MMJ shows at the Uptown in KC. Small venue, but it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Always love Conan and real rock and roll. All late night shows always had top 40 crap. Conan introduced me to this band. Jet, Black Keys, and others.
Such an amazing performance. It's as if they felt they were all on their deathbed and this would be their last opportunity to share with the world what they love to do. Incredibly inspiring.
17 years later and I still watch this
So Grand !!! 🎉 Saw them tonigh in Nashville ... They ROCK !
I remember seeing this performance back in 2003, and being blown away. I got a copy as soon as I could and would drive around for what seems like hours and play the solo on repeat! So good!

He always played barefoot back then. Pure KY boys. I was kind of freaked out when I saw him in shoes the first time.
Damn this was good
ALWAYS A FAN OF MMJ🥰🥰🥰😊😘😍🤩
Saw this when it aired the first time. It still moves!
There was a time around 2003 that I wanted to just be Jim James. One of the most overlooked and underrated bands of all time.
Saw this performance during my freshman year of college and have been a lifelong fan ever since. Still, when the topic of "my favorite" bands comes up, as difficult a question as that is to answer, MMJ is always on the list somewhere. 34,000 views? Really? Greatest band in the world!
So good! Finally in HD!
That was amazing.
Never gets old. "I am buying that record!"
The performance that had me hooked!
temón!!!!
Good choice on buying that record, Conan. Money well spent on ear ecstacy!
Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you said AT Ear Ecstasy.
Wow. Pretty much a HQ reupload of the 2006 upload that got me into this band. That was 10 years ago now. I always loved watching Conan but I only was ever introduced to this bands a year later or so on youtube with this performance. Since then theyv'e been a favorite of mine.

Holy crap.
They are so amazing.
Johnny Quaid just absolutely shreddin' on guitar!!!
so happy I found this!
This is just brutal. Awesome!

20 years later and I’ve never heard of this band until I watched an episode of American Dad. Now Cake was a good Conan band.
After they came back from commercial Conan said to Andy about MMJ, “That’s total commitment right there.”
It doesn't get much better, boys and girls.
the keyboard guy didn’t get the hair memo
Wow, I they fucking rocked that live performance.. all my picture frames are on the floor in my living room 😵
Where did the older low quality version from like 2006 go?
I want to watch that one!!!!
My Morning Jacket brings hope
Damn. Cousin It is a fantastic singer
I remember sharing this with my boss and she was like you listen to weird shit, and feeling so proud that was her response knowing she was younger than me.
My husband and I saw them on a little side stage at the Gorge years ago and were so in love with them. Seen them many times since.❤
My existence changed that night.
So freakn good.
This band pretty good. Rock
Badasses
Nostaglic feels
Got me crying like a baby
That was great, I did buy that record.
LONG LIVE MMJ
Yes as soon as I saw this I remember it live. I was like Conan. I’m buying this. And I’m still a huge fan.oops I already said this lol
Hell ya. Takes me back
Remember watching the original broadcast.
GODDAMN!!! Every time I get jaded about the state of today's so-called music, these guys always give me hope!! And always helps that Patrick Hallahan is a fucking beast!!!!!!!

Marcos Marques muito crazy horse, acho legal eles tocarem que nem loucos e nao ficarem fazendo pose de intelectual
"I'm buying that record" -Conan O'Brien 2003
I saw this band on American dad a while ago and I didn't think they were real until I saw the episode again and decided to look them up
haha same here actually
I wished they had never been on American Dad but whats done is done lol..still one of the greatest bands of the last decade.
brandon242 one of the writers for the show had a religious experience at one of their legendary bonnaroo shows. thats why they ended up on american dad.
Catchy beat and groovy band. I reacted to this, thanks to an awesome subscriber/patreon who requested your video! It should go live in a few days.
Easily one of the best rock songs ever
