- How to turn your Mac into a UNIVERSAL Computer using Parallels
We often need to run Windows Programs, Mac Programs, and even Linux and UNIX programs to do work, play games, or develop apps. However, do we really want to buy and maintain a whole bunch of separate computers? Good news! We can turn a Mac into a UNIVERSAL computer using Parallels Virtualization software.
(and - there is much more to Parallels - so stay tuned for more videos)

About…me.
Hello there - I'm glad you've taken the time to look at my videos and this description box!
My name is Frank and I've been teaching post-graduate programs in technical subjects for almost 25 years. My Master's Degree is in Learning and Technology (from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC - where they filmed the X-Men movies!).
I'm a Microsoft Certified Trainer (since 1998), a Cisco Certified Academy Instructor (since 1999), and have a lot of different technical certifications (I even had my own consultancy and was a member of the Apple Consultants Network for a few years. I like technology a lot.
I've been fascinated with learning and how to improve learning for years. Especially how to leverage technology for learning. From productivity Applications like Teams, OneNote, Excel, and the entire Microsoft Office suite to tools such as Mindmapping, Metaverse, VR, AR, and more - I like to see how we can use tools to leverage our ability to teach and learn.
Learning and Technology RUclips is about helping students and teachers improve their learning by leveraging technology tools. Whether remote teaching, distance learning, hybrid teaching, or completely in the classroom - we can use technology to enhance our skills. This channel is dedicated to developing teaching and personal productivity when it comes to learning and technology. Thank you for watching!

Hi thank you for the informative video. I would really appreciate it if you could test a few programs, like SolidWorks, CIROS, TIA Portal,...
The new M2 MAX Macbook Pro would be a very nice option for me, but only if the programs I have to use on Windows really work out.
thank you so much man i hadn't found that option, you're a hero
Thinking about getting this, I work for an IT firm and the software only runs on Windows. I only want this if it's super, super stable, I can't have any glitches when I'm doing corporate accounting
I’ve been using Parallels for many, many years. It’s definitely worked for me.
forgot to say thank you so much, great video, very very useful. The best video about Parallels on RUclips for sure.
This is saving my life in school
That is really good to hear! This is EXACTLY why I created this video - for my students. I have many students that have Apple computers and need to run Windows programs. Plus all sorts of things around Linux, etc.
Your comment makes me very happy. Good luck in school and happy learning!
Does it also emulate x86 Windows 11? Or only Arm guest on an Arm host.
Only ARM. This is why I keep a couple of my older Intel Mac Minis around. Just for some Intel x86 systems I want to run.
Say you work in an office with a windows domain & active directory that doesnt work with OSX, would I be able to have this set up and work with said domain and active directory? Would I be able to connect to network drives and such?
Yes! The VM will connect to the Windows Domain. Warning: HOME Edition of Windows does not allow this - so you’ll need to use the Pro version (or Education Edition if you’re a school)
HI Frank, I have version 17 now for some time, and I want to have the icons of some Windows apps (like MS Access, Coreldraw and some model train apps) in my Mac dock.
I have been searching for a long time how to do that, but can't find a solition (possibly the wrong keywords, though I tried quite a few now). It should be a simple procedure.
I would prefer an icon that let me quickly start the relevant application in WIndows
Can you advise me if it will make sense to upgrade to version 19? I am running Windows 10 now.
Hope you can help.
I believe the solution is to go to the view menu in Parallels and select the integration mode. This will make all the Windows items integrate with the Mac OS. I’m not in front of my computer, but it’s an integrated view mode.
Thanks its working, live patch has some issue.
Excellent video and well made! Cheers
I already own Parallels do you have any videos or suggestions that can help me solve an issue when I open it up it gives me this Error Message
THERE IS NO OPERATING SYSTEM INSTALLED IN THIS VIRTUAL MACHINE
You’ve just saved me splashing out over 1k on a windows laptop thanks
That’s great! I’m glad it was helpful and I think you’ll find it amazingly helpful.
Hi, you seem to know parallells well. I have been trying to get my easystore external storage device to work on windows and my mac. I am using a mac desktop computer but am trying to use windows to play games but really need my external storage to be used on both mac and windows. Do you have any videos or direct support on this? It's been days and I haven't been able to find a way to seamlessly make both work at the same time. I use the mac for work but want windows for play. I am also worried about ruining files ony my storage as there is a lot of work related data. Any help is appreciated.
I wish you would explore some free tools too . Like VM ware. What if someone can't afford licences for parallels
I also have some videos on VMWare - I use it quite a bit actually and have taught quite. A few classes on it.
VMWare Workstation and Hyper-V are great tools, but mostly for Windows.
VMware’s Fusion for Mac is also good, but at the time I made this video didn’t work on M1/2 Macs. I believe that’s changed and think making a video on it is an excellent idea.
@@LearningandTechnology yes..the fusion one seems to have been out a while now. Will be waiting for your video on it.
@@weiSane I will for sure! I’ll also have to check to see if Fusion for Mac has a free version - in the past, VMWare Player was free, Workstation and Fusion were not.
VMWare Player has evolved quite a bit and is a fantastic option on Windows.
The challenge is that Hyper-V is free - so VMWare has to compete on that. Mac doesn’t have a built-in VM tool, so there’s less need for VMWare to provide a free version.
However - I’ll check and definitively make a video! Thank you so much for watching, commenting, and the excellent suggestion.
@@LearningandTechnology while Windows may work now VMWare isn't authorized by Microsoft to run Windows 11 ARM on Macs.
@@dannyknox4314 I use VMWare on Windows and Linux hosts and Parallels on Mac hosts. It seems to be the best mix for my needs. This would be another reason to use Parallels on a Mac for sure.
Great video! Thank you.
Thank YOU for watching and taking the time to comment. Appreciate you.
Is Parallels Pro Edition a one time payment
It is a yearly cost which includes upgrades as they come out (plus a bunch of other features)
i have a core i9, 16gb, 1tb mac os 2019. i already have the windows. do you think it can handle linux?
Will you be running both of them at the same time?
can i add virtual wifi adapter in win 11 paralel??
on mac m1 🤔🧐
Are you still able to run Android on Parallels too?
Great content Frank. I tried to use your discount code to purchase but it does not work. do you have another discount code to use?
Thanks! I’m not sure if this code will give the discount - it’s my latest one though: prf.hn/click/camref:1101lumT6
@@LearningandTechnology this discount code not working either
@@gallerypapillon5511 okay - it might have expired - I’ll see if they will give me a new one
many thanks@@LearningandTechnology
@@LearningandTechnologyI can't wait to get it..I'll wait to see if you can get a new discount code!
Can you use Parallels to create a nested Virtualization lab?
If your system is powerful enough - you can go into the realm of VM in a VM. However, a nested lab environment is a challenge for several reasons.
First, the resource issue - it does get challenging
Second, chip Architectures - you won’t be able to run an Intel system as a VM or a VM-in-a-VM on an M1/2 chip
Most of the times when I build VM labs - I use older Intel based Mac Minis. This is because I use Type 1 Hypervisors and then run Type 2 VMs on them.
Parallels is a Type 2 Hypervisor.
So… I guess my answer is a yes/no - with a lot more that could be said/shown. Maybe I should do some deeper technical videos on this…
@@LearningandTechnology Thanks for your reply.
I own an M1 and it’s been a very annoying task for virtualization. My question was not complete and sorry for that.
My only solution to create some virtual labs seem to be Azure, at least for now.
@@andimihai4381 all good! You are not alone. Parallels is fantastic for creating VMs that you plan to use on a regular basis (Windows on Mac) and also for learning things like Linux.
Where I find students having issues (and it’s not Parallels - it’s the M1/2 chips) is when students want to run Windows Servers or other Operating Systems that use Intel chips. If you are a Mac user - then you are correct - Azure is a good way to go. Just be cautious on the configuration and costing. You need to ensure you don’t over-spend when you don’t need to.
@@LearningandTechnology Thanks a lot Frank!
Just started my vm on Azure yesterday. I choose for one that is able to do nested virtualisation, so that I’ve installed Windows Server, and inside Hyper-V I allocated resources for another 2 vm. It was plenty of fun. Just constantly checking the costs. For like couple of hours of practice it’s been £1.65. I know that because it’s stopped and deallocated, the costs tend to be minimum, hope so. I’ll definitely keep my eyes on it.
Thank you again sir and keep up the great work that you do!
well done
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
can i use Windows keyboard shortcuts on the VM or do i have to use the Mac-Shortcuts?
The windows ones work on the VM - the “Windows” key is the “Command” key - they both map the same
@LearningandTechnology ahh ok thank you. I never rlly used a Mac (just an iPad) but for my computer science studies I feel like parallels would be a great way to have access to every operating system. Do you think the fact of Windows being just "on arm" might affect my studies? I've heard complaints about the accessibility of some programs on Windows on ARM
@@salzstange it’s difficult to say with 100% accuracy, but a lot of students in computer science do use Apple Mac systems - because they are UNIX under the hood and also can run Windows.
Testing would, of course, at some point involve a PC is that’s your target platform. These days, it’s not as critical though. Parallels for the Windows would likely be great.
"silicone"
Is Parallels a one time purchase price?
It’s yearly
Hi Frank! For parallels 18, windows 11 for microsoft Access programming better 32 GB than 16 on a M2pro? ThankYou very much! Cristiano
If you are doing a lot of Virtualization - more RAM is nice. I normally build systems with 32GB, but I also teach networking and run more than one VM at a time.
If you have 16, you can always split the RAM 8/8 between OSX and Win11
With 32, you’ll have more options and faster systems

@@LearningandTechnology Thank you so much FranK! It is hard to decide wich machine to buy as we cannot update them later! Again thank you and have a nice day!
