    I got it, I am hitting the notes and going through the registers. It took me a couple weeks. But my brain and my voice is now hooked up. I can sense it from a audible way and a physical way in my voice box. Mostly the third note in the scale. It is new for me but it is there. This is cool. Thank you so much for your marvelous teaching.

    Before practicing with this video immediately after my warm ups (also provided by the man himself Jeff Rolka) I tried to sing Yellow by Coldplay very badly because of the “Look how they shine FOR you” and the “Your skin” however after practicing this video ive been able to smooth out the harsh crack i used to have while singing those parts! Making progress!! Thanks Jeff!!

    • @JeffRolka

      My advice would be to first see an ENT or otolaryngologist to assess the nature of the damage. When you have their approval to sing and recoup they will give you some tips and I can point you to the appropriate resources on my channel - or just in general.

    Is it true you can’t yodel anymore after smoothing our the break?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  6 лет назад +4

      I haven't heard that. I imagine after a lengthy period of practicing smoothing things out it could be difficult to do it, but it would take quite some time before the habits were so set that yodeling would not be possible. That is, after all, what all these exercises are about - developing habits so that when we're singing songs or performing we don't have to think about our technique.

    Jeff, love your videos, thanks a ton! Question: I am finding it easier to sing through the break when descending, but the break is really noticeable when trying to sing through it while ascending the scale. Am I doing something incorrectly or is this common?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад +1

      Probably just old habits. It's easy to have too much thyroarytenoid dominance on the ascending scales. Try to notice how your voice feels when you've successfully descended, then match those qualities when trying the ascending scales.

    Hey Jeff!
    I have found your videos incredibly helpful on my journey to enhancing and strengthening my voice, thank you so much for all the work you have put in!
    One question - concerning the "*zone* of the passagio".... is it called the "zone" because it varies between person to person, or is it called a zone because the phase of transition is more than one single note?? What I mean is, is the zone of the passagio one note, where I transition from chest voice to head voice (because then I would call it the "note of the passagio".... or is it a "zone" where i transition and is that zone always going to be the same notes for me as a i progress in my singing and get stronger?
    Kind of confusing to try and write out the specific question I have but any pointers as far as this goes would be great! Thank you again.
    ~~Danny

      I didn't find the part that I mention anything about airflow. There are a few options that are readily available:

      On my website you can sign up for my Triple A Method, which has an entire section devoted to airflow (the course is free, just sign up for my newsletter)
      www.jeffrolka.com/triple-a-method
      Finally, I just did a course on appoggio breath management practice. It's not free, but it's a comprehensive system to establish real support for singing:

    So I naturally have a raspy and brutish voice, not the best for singing or really speaking to new people who aren’t accustomed to it. My frenulum is also further back as well a my tongue being slightly thick. So recently I’ve been watching videos to improve my voice overall and activate different mussels that might help strengthen the overall quality of my voice. I am in the range of tenor according to my music teacher so I was wondering what videos you would suggest that might help with the basics of vocal exercise and mussel improvement.

    Hello there jeff, I have one question, my English is bad, so I dont understand everything from the video.
    My vocal range is Chest voice low note is D2 high G4 (but I'm squeezing throat very much, comfortably is E4)
    I also like oldschool rock, skid row, led zeppelin, deep purple and etc.
    I scream from D5 to E5
    That means i can sing only Child in time - Deep purple, other songs need high notes from Chest voice which i dont have.
    Is it possilbe to reach those notes for baritone like me? if yes, Could you give me which videos of you are best for me.
    Thank you ^^

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад +1

      Don't squeeze! You're causing undue fatigue and also blurring the lines where your secondo passaggio is. This video can help you but you have to stop straining. Try to mimic the tonal quality that you hear in the video. It's kind of hollow sounding at first, but with practice the sound will match your chest voice.
      Best,
      Jeff

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад +3

      When just getting used to the different muscle groups that act on the vocal fold, it's quite easy to get stuck using one set or another. Try to keep your transition point as consistent as possible. That will help in becoming more flexible in your ability to utilize thyroarytenoid dominant singing, cricothyroid dominant singing or falsetto as appropriate.
      Hope that helps! I may discuss this tonight at the live event, as that's a really good questions. Here's a link:

    because i believe i'm baritone i go to the baritone video but it seems those notes reachable only with my chest voice... then i go to this vid..... i can do all the scales quite easily.... but it sounds tiny and low volume..... when i add loudness it wont connect.... in other word i can sing through the scale when i keep it light.... it cracks when i add weight to it... so i try to add resonance but still it cracks..... why is that jeff?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад +2

      It sounds as if you're not transitioning from thyroarytenoid dominant singing to cricothyroid dominant singing, though without hearing you I'm only postulating. If you haven't seen the below videos, have a look. They explain the process and show you how to practice the skill:

      Then to work on it:

      Sudden changes like that are not typically permanent unless your voice has just changed. You may find that after some careful vocalization you're able to sing in that tessitura again.

    • @JeffRolka

      No, the secondo passaggio, what is commonly referred to as 'the break' is located at different notes for every vocal fache (what is commonly referred to ask vocal ranges.) There are, in fact, several different types of each fache. Have a look here:

    Got any tips for women Contraltos? I've literally been doing lessons from mezzo, alto, to tenor from your vids. How can I smooth over breaks between those registers? I have this weird issue where when I go from a song that's made for mezzo soprano (women singers) to trying to sing a song in tenor (male singers) that I can normally sing easily...my voice won't want to switch and will crack and vice versa... It's weird. Any vids for us contraltos?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад +1

      The alto videos correspond to the contralto fach range delineations. What you're describing is normal in that we can get vocalized to specific parts of our ranges. If you have to make fast switches to different focal points in your range try to include all of the various ranges you're performing as well as integrations of them in your warm up practice prior to singing the pieces. That will at least help while your overall flexibility develops.
      I hope that helps!

      Might be a bit light in order to offset any leftover excessive muscle tension if you previously were in the habit of pulling chest. Keep working towards a balanced approach to your singing and your tone with fill up and match brilliantly.

    Hi Jeff, I am 17 and I sing in choir. I’ve had many people tell me I am a lyric baritone and just as many people tell me I have a leggiero tenor, how do I know which one I am? I feel mist comfortable in a tenor and even low alto range but I can not go about an A4 in full voice, however I can sing many A4s in a row without any strain it is an easy note for me but I cannot sing much high most of the time. Why is that if I am a tenor?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  5 лет назад

      At 17, assuming you're male by the fachs you've referenced, it's quite likely too soon to make a fach designation. It's about more than just the highest notes or lowest notes that you can sing. Also, without working with you it's unlikely I could tell you anything specific about fach, as the differences between some are quite minor. All of that also depends on fully developed vowel alignment and modification practices as well as strict adherence to registration events. Having never heard you, I have no idea whether or not you're practicing those aspects of your singing technique.
      All the best!

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад +3

      Great question - depending on whom you ask, they may consider head voice and falsetto synonymous. I do not. Head voice, properly executed, retains an adducted vocal fold. Falsetto does not. This video only works on the head voice, not falsetto, and as such, should be done in that fashion.
      Great question!

I'm doing them really gently and I don't feel any tension nor strain while doing them and I'm only doing the first two excercises in lip rolls :/ Do you recommend me to stop doing them and stick baritone excercises?

    Is head voice using your throat and breathy way of singing?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  3 года назад

      Great question! No, but many folks refer to it that way. That way of singing, allows for more separation of the vocal folds during singing, resulting in the breathy tone. If we learn to cross our secondo passggi effectively (the secondo passaggio is the 'break') then we can keep the vocal folds together while still allowing for them to elongate. That results in head voice. It's also results in consistent tone from chest to head voice.
      Great question! Thanks!

      My goal is to be able sing with 100% maximum vocal health without any strain and to be able to sing my pop songs I write along the lines of Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Sean Mendez.
      What should I be looking for over how much period of time to consider private lessons? Is their a general rule of thumb on development time frames where you should notice results from exercises and when it is time to dive into lessons?

      Well, not sure about popping. That is not a sound I hear or have personally experienced - but that doesn't mean it's not okay. If it hurt, or you had difficulties or hoarseness later, then that needs to be evaluated before you continue.

    My choir teacher says I'm a baritone but has me sing tenor, my vocal coach says I'm a tenor but has me sing baritone, and last but not least the musical director says I'm a baritenor and just has me alternate between lines in the music at random points. I want to assert myself and just stick to one but I don't know which one I probably am since people tell me I'm both, what should i do?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  7 лет назад +2

      Fach (one's vocal range designation) isn't something that we learn casually or by a few listens to a singer's voice. Additionally, I advise that one not try to jump to conclusions about one's fach. As if all that isn't enough, different schools of voice will label the ranges of fachs differently! So some more robust lower tenors in one school may be baritones in another.
      I would advise you to learn as much as you can about your voice. Where is the secondo passaggio? What are the characteristics of your voice in it's various ranges? What do lower notes 'feel' like and what types of resonances come naturally to you? What area of your voice, as located on a keyboard, feels most natural to you?
      If you learn those things, you will be using your voice efficiently and sustainably. You will have excellent command of your registration events and great efficiency of phrase. Your intonation will be impeccable and consistent.
      If you do that you can sing whatever you want in stunning fashion and let folks label you as they choose. It will hardly matter.

      Jeff

    • @JeffRolka

      That can be tricky. Getting the balance right and keeping the vocal folds adducted is key. It's meant to be cricothyroid dominant singing transitioning to thyroarytenoid dominant singing. Since I don't know the context of your usage of 'falsetto' and 'head voice' it would be best to describe it that way, though those terms may be unfamiliar. Have a look online at their definitions, it may make this all make more sense.

    • @JeffRolka

      Kind of depends on the results you're getting. The sound and space in the aural cavity and overall ability to release the jaw. In general, having one's fingers on their cheeks facilitates this a bit more effectively in my opinion.

    Ok, got everything smooth and easy until the last “Mai” exercise, where the upper register is airy and wispy and then there is a yodel like flip into chest voice! I can’t seem to be able to produce a clear tone in the head voice, so when my voice flips to chest it is real obvious.

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  4 года назад

      That exercise is difficult, focus on the ones that precede it, particularly those with the 'u' vowel (sounds like 'oo'). Focus on that vowel being hollow or hooty sounding. That is the sound of the head voice with an adducted vocal fold. The hootyness is over-balanced, but it can be worked with once all the vowels can be managed across the secondo passaggio (the break).
      Keep at it!
      Jeff

    I'm a tenor 1 according to my teacher . My voice is naturally pitchy and sometimes I can do very good high notes but other times I feel like I can't even sing or speak is there a reason why my singing changes so much ?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  8 лет назад +1

      That can depend on a great many things. I would first ask your current teacher about it as they may already be aware and working towards a solution. I would have to hear you in order to give you a more specific diagnosis, but generally intonation issues are the result of an imbalance between airflow and vocal fold tension. Get those items working together and your intonation will improve to the point where you can begin to fine tune it based upon vowel alignment and aural skills (anticipating your phrases, etc.)

      Hello!
      Thanks for watching and thanks for writing in!
      It really depends on what you're doing as you sing up into the area of the secondo passaggio (break.) If you're carrying too much weight on the thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice (chest voice) what you're describing is quite normal. Really hard to say without hearing you. Descending exercises may be more appropriate depending on the status of your technique.

    what if i can reach most of those notes in full voice ?

    • @JeffRolka
      @JeffRolka  7 лет назад +5

      Most tenors can. The point is that the natural transition point (secondo passaggio) is typically lower than what singers will 'push their voices' to. By finding the natural point of parity between thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid muscle dominance (chest voice versus head voice musculature dominance) we get a much smoother transition and consequently more continuity of resonance. That means that eventually, no one will hear it.

      Thanks for subscribing! That is discouraging and I'm sorry that you have to deal with that. The fact is, when we sing, we're using our voices differently than if we were just speaking. It's not entirely the same voice, though of course there are many similarities. My advice, if I may, is to encourage you to continue to practice. Study your voice, study the vowels and phrasing. Work on your understanding of music, written and aural and keep singing! When it comes to singing, more than other instruments in music, everyone thinks that they're an expert. Most are not. Nod your head, say, 'thanks for the feedback,' and go and check the facts.
      I'll be here to offer what support and information that I can.

      Sometimes it takes a bit of time to get the lip trill going. It's mostly about airflow, and if you keep your focus on your abdominal engagement you'll do a lot to get closer to sustaining it. That's not the accepted distance between primo and secondo passaggio but that's about the right general area. Usually the lower note, what you have as d4 is a bit lower than we think. It's very common for vocalists with good vowel alignment and airflow to sing right past the primo passaggio without noticing it. f#4 is right in the middle of the tenors fachs in terms of secondo passaggi.
