Today I watched a RUclips video called "Fix Your Broken Jeans Zipper in 2 Minutes!" (posted July 26, 2022) by "MrTechMech", where he shows that you actually CAN replace teeth in some metal zippers, by removing the same size teeth from another zipper, using a flame to seal frayed fabric fibers where the teeth are missing on your damaged garment, & then using a pliers to pinch the procured teeth in place over the flame-sealed edge. I would imagine it will not work for all situations, but it might be worth a try. I'll be trying it after I decide from where I will obtain the replacement teeth, even if that means taking them from the very bottom of the broken zipper & creating a new, higher bottom stop on that same zipper.

If I was trying to repair the zipper where the teeth were missing I would cut a snip in the cord and it would be very easy to slide the side back onto the left side. There would be no need to take off the top stops or replace them. Once the slider was back on I would place a bottom stop or make a thread dam to act as a stop to hold the area together where the teeth were missing. It would be a lot quicker and easier than what you just showed in the video.
That was pretty helpful, but what if the teeth were broken towards the top? I can't close the zipper from there because doubt I could fit in my jeans.

Great video. One question, if the damaged teeth are way higher up, is the only option to replace the whole zipper? Do you have a video for that?
This is what I was wondering too. I have a couple broken teeth about an inch from the top, so I need a solution to fix that. These are my favorite jeans that are no longer made.
@@candace38351 If teeth are missing from he top then you can get the slider back on and make a stop where the teeth are missing. You will not be able to zip the slider to the very top but it should not matter as the fly will cover the zipper and no one will know the zipper will not go to the top except you. If a tooth is missing somewhere in the middle of the zipper you can make a stop at the missing tooth. If you can unzip the zipper enough so you can slip your butt into the shortened zipper then you do not have to replace the zipper.

this was a great video and it just might save the jeans I am wearing! One this, you made it appear as we all just have bottom stops laying around. I don't. I can see that you reuse the top stop what about the bottom? Since I do not have new bottom stops anyone else just sew the bottom zipper making a 'thread stop' in about the same location as the metal stop should be placed? Thanks again! for these great instructions! You've given me hope :-)

Here's my problem: I bought a neat old square tote bag. It has a heavy old metal zipper across the top that won't close. At the far end a few missing teeth, so no problem. All the middle teeth look good. However at the other end the zipper has been pulled back all the way and there is at least one tooth inside the pull sitting at an angle.... maybe even a second wonky or missing tooth but I can't tell cause the pull is stuck. I'm willing to unstitch that end or the zipper but I don't know that I'll be able to get the zipper off even then. Any advice is appreciated. I'm also open to replacing the whole zipper but clueless about that also. Thanks.

I have a pair of stretchy denim, not harder denim like in the video. The broken teeth are very close to the bottom of the zipper. I couldn't get the teeth to button up, so I took more teeth off the bottom, pushed the actual zipper onto the the bottom, zipped the jeans up started from there.

My zipper teeth would not go back together for anything. I followed the instructions but when it came to "buttoning" up the zipper teeth back together, it was impossible and totally tore up my fingers and nails trying to force it back together ugggg any suggestions?

Help: I have a coat zipper stuck at bottom with part of satin lining stuck in it. It's a double zipper. The top portion of the zipper is where the lining is caught. I've tried jiggling, soap, pencil lead etc to loosen the zipper but the lining is bunched up throughout the upper slider. Your ideas?

Thanks for sharing this I had no idea that you could repair zips with missing teeth. My unworn pink Armani jeans (broke the zip apart squeezing into them when I was heavier), now I'll be able to wear them for a bit this Summer, what's left of it.
PS I wonder if sewing over the part where the damaged bottom part is and also the top part where the stoppers go, really thick, would stop the slider moving further. I don't have another base stopper and it's quite fiddly on these tiny teeth on this Armani zip?

Yes, it really doesn't take much to stop a slider, but you will want to sew it thick enough that the slider body doesn't pass over it. Simple fix, just need to take the time. All the best!

Where do you get a new bottom stop? I used to jest sew above the missing teeth with a needle and thread.
Usually bottom stops come with a new zipper head. But I don’t know how to find them separately.

actually while watching the first 2 minutes i managed to get the slider back on through the gap that the missing teeth made. just button up the lower part, slide the thing down, get the first tooth above the gap in, and slide it back up

Ok so I have a pair of suede boots with a zipper on the side. The slider came off on one side but at the very bottom, there is like one or two missing teeth, then 2 functioning teeth, but the one tooth is starting to come out. How do I repair this?!

Yes.
I don't remove the zipper or the stoppers on my jeans. I open up the other side of the zipper itself and put back onto the other side and then close it not using too much force. I then put some stitches in to act as a bottom stop. You never see the first couple of teeth so when the zip is on, you slide down to make sure the teeth catch as close to bottom as possible and if it does complete stitching for a bottom stop. We'll that's the way I've done it in the past. Removing and sticking in a zipper is a pain so always best to find the easiest option if zipper decides don't wasn't to work for you no more. Sewing should be done by all school kids. I've always done my own sewing after the age of 6..

I need to replace the bottom pin of the zipper chain on a jacket. Not the stop but rather the metal pin at the bottom of the teeth that you slide down into the the top of the slider before you zip it up. It's the part that hooks into the stop and keeps both sides of the chain together at the bottom once you've zipped it up. Can't find ANY videos on repairing that. And can't find that part in any zipper repair kits that I've looked at online.
Unfortunately, that's the only part of a zipper that cannot be repaired when it fails. There's no real, long term fix so we haven't posted anything about it. The best thing to do is to replace the whole zipper when that part fails if it's economical.
UCAN Zippers USA I scoured the internet some more. Turns out that the part is called a Zipper pin. It's part of the zipper box and pin. The only place I saw the part online is from suppliers in China! Like Sino-Best Industries etc. Or on Alibaba.

I have womens jeans and i have 1 tooth missing on the zipper, but of course its the 6th tooth down from the top, how would that work without the bottom teeth opening back up?
6th tooth down from the top is pretty high. I think your options would be to set the top stops at a lower point or replace the zipper completely. When you set the top stop at a lower point, the obvious problem is that you'll have a space now, but sometimes the fly on denim can hide that. It's all up to you and what you're willing to trade off.
There is no top stop at the end of my jean zipper so it just keeps falling out. What should i do?

Great videos, but how to fix the leading metal edge in the bottom of a coat zipper, it almost came off and is hanging on a thread and it is very difficult to insert it into the slider.
I think that you're referring to the pin on a separating bottom zipper. Unfortunately, when the pin comes off, there's not much more that you can do to repair the zipper. You'll have to replace the whole zipper. Wish I had better news.

if you those archaic pants so much take them to a seamstress and get a new zipper...its not expensive

Unfortunately not. Metal teeth are punched on with a specific mold and you can't just add teeth back on. Wish we had better news.

If it's in the middle of the whole zipper, there's not much you can do to fix it. If it's at the top, then you can shorten the zipper.
I would take it to a clothing alteration specialist who may be able to fix the zipper similar to what this man is explaining in the video. It is worth a try. You also could replace the zipper if it is worth spending the money . Don't throw it out until you have checked with someone who can actually view the problem.
So, I'm having a bad time "buttoning my zipper" is it a big deal to skip that part? Also these are True Religions Low Waist with a small zipper paid too much to throw out but a single tooth is broken at the bottom perhaps the 4th tooth from the bottom going upwards is broke. Really can't figure out how to button the zip up for the life of me, they're just not coming together. Maybe fixing my skirts at midnight not greatest idea. Maybe I'll just have to buy some more again. 😔

What if it's got broken teeth closer to the top...how do I fix That?
I did essentially what he showed here but instead of moving the bottom stop up, I moved the top zipper stop down. then used a keychain to go through the zipper pull and over my pant button just to be sure it wouldn't unzip accidentally.
