- A rundown of my ten favorite horror movies from the 1970s on 4K and blu ray disc. Includes 4K UHD recommendations. Also, a brief recap of my history with horror and how I became a big fan of the genre -- in just the last few years! Somewhat geared toward those who are relatively new to 4K and/or maybe even new to 70s horror.

Dawn of the Dead 1978 is probably one of my most watched films of all time, watched it at least 50 times since 1982. I remember long lines extending a block or two long for Dawn of the dead, finally got to watch it on a bootleg betamax copy. in 82 and I have since watched it on TV, Betamax, VHS, Laserdisc, DVD and Blu ray, I own the anchor bay VHS, anchor bay DVD special edition, and the UK Second sight Blu ray edition of the movie. I even have the novelization which I bought in a B Dalton in a San Francisco mall back in 81. and the SPI boardgame of the movie.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I will turn 53 later this year as well, and there are so many great films I'm only now starting to discover from the genre. I was a late bloomer with horror, but it has definitely become one of my favorite genres.
my top ten 70s horror movies in no order: Dawn of the dead, Legend of Hell House, Exorcist, Suspiria, Lemora a Child's Tale, The Night Stalker(TV movie), Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Phantasm, Malatesta's Carnival of Blood, The Sentinel. Honorable mention House of Dark shadows 1970.
Im 55 this year, the very first horror movie I watched was the Satanic Rites of Dracula which had its nude scenes cut on TV in 1976, I was nine at the time. wasnt really scared by it, but what really scared me was the Sentinel which I watched in 78, when I was 11, my father friend owned a cinema and I snuck in terrified me at the time.
Nice list!!! The Exorcist would top my list. I'd probably also include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Invasion of the Body Snatchers ('78 remake). Great video!
also would like to do honorable mentions on 70s horror tv shows which I loved which are: Ghost Story/Circle of fear, Quinn Martin's Tales of the Unexpected, Kolchak Night Stalker Journey to the Unknown, Dead of Night(BBC UK). and the Supernatural(BBC UK TV 1977).
I can't believe you didn't mention Black Christmas. It's one of my all time favorite films
Yeah I should've at least done an honorable mention for that one. It was definitely an impactful film for the era. I'm just personally a little late to the party on that one, and I didn't see it for the first time myself until just last December. So it hasn't had the time to marinate in my mind as long as some of these others have. Great film though, and I do intend to pick up the 4K of it at some point. And if I'd done a Top 20 instead of Top 10, it probably would've made my list. 😉🤘
@@TheOriginalFuzz It's so great. I watch it at least twice every Christmas. I discovered it a little late as well. Maybe just like 5 or 6 years ago.

That's awesome man! Though I'll admit, it really has been kinda like drinking through a fire hose with the horror genre, trying to keep up with all the great releases. So much to discover! It's been fun playing catch-up over the last few years, but damn, there are just a ton of titles out there in the genre. And so many sub-genres too! And the further into the genre I get, the more I'm starting to develop a more concrete sense of what kind of horror fan I am... as well as an understanding of just how varied the genre is. Because there are definitely some types of horror films that I'm not really into, while there are still many other types that I am into in a huge way. This whole endeavor has also got me into other types of genre films (old school action films from the 70s, exploitation films, etc.). Thanks for watching brother!

Another great list, it’s good to see some my favourites there. A couple of omissions as previously mentioned, the usual suspects, Texas Chainsaw, The Exorcist and one I would put on my list is probably The best remake of any film, 1978’s Invasion of The Bodysnatchers. It’s always good to see someone doing their own list and not just a list of what everyone thinks is good, this lists are so predictable. Thanks for the content
Bodysnatchers is such a great film! Great choice. And I will definitely be discussing The Exorcist 4K in the near future shortly after it comes out -- most likely as part of a 31 Days of Horror Challenge video series I'll be doing in October (and maybe late Sept... I've got that cool blue Best Buy steelbook pre-ordered, and I can't wait to see how the new restoration looks!). I'm not quite as big a fan of TCM as maybe others are, but I do like it and have it on 4K (the U.S. Dark Sky release)... and I'm sure it will come up in the October horror videos as well.😉 Thanks so much for watching!
@@TheOriginalFuzz I’m just hoping they do The Exorcist justice, such an epic, influential film deserves the best restoration. Texas Chainsaw has also been restored by The great Second Sight, I’ve heard the Dark Sky 4k has a slightly grittier look, probably more faithful to the original vision of Tobe Hooper and The Second Sight restoration is much cleaner and colourful so I guess it’s down to personal preference.
yah amityville horror love that one I also have the book which the movie is based on by Jay Anson. bought the book back in 1979 when I was 12. Read it shortly after I watched the movie, both book and movie are equally creepy. and scary.
yah I was going to put salems lot in the list but for me this was a mini series rather than a full on movie. watched it o TV in 79 , yep the vampire was scary as hell. loved the movie

Wow, you weren't kidding about the Amityville Horror. I've seen this movie many times dating back to the 80s and this is the best it's ever looked. By a mile.
It's SO damn colorful compared to versions I've seen through the years.

Yep, that's exactly how I felt the first time I watched the 4K. I was pretty blown away. Never knew it could look that good... that colorful.
@@TheOriginalFuzz it was great. Hey I have a question for you. I’m new to the world of boutique blu rays and loving everything I’m learning so far. Made a few purchases and now want to buy a dedicated blu ray player, rather than use my ps5. Have a 77 inch oled and nice home theater system. Curious what player you are using or if you have any recommendations? So far, my research has led me to the Panasonic ub 9000 or the 820. Leaning towards the ub9000 due to its better audio capability. Thanks in advance.
@@TheTylerpoe I have a Panasonic UB820 for my primary 4K player, and it's a great unit. I would definitely recommend it. The Panasonics I think have pretty much become the industry standard. The Ub9000 has a better build quality (built like a tank apparently), but it's essentially the same interface and features as the UB820. I think the Ub9000 has a few extra features for audio, but for the most part, I believe it's the same internal electronics as the Ub820. So I would say unless you want the better build quality, save yourself a few $$ and go with the UB820.

Yeah in retrospect, I should've at least mentioned it in the honorables. It probably would've made my list if I'd done like a Top 20 or something instead, so it was close.
I remember the advertisement for Amityville Horror came out in the late 70s, but still haven't seen it yet. Did watch Dawn of the Dead in theaters on double bill need to upgrade to 4K. Superia I own, but never watched it because I rather watch it on 4k.
I remember the first time I became aware of Amityville Horror in the late 70s was when the old TV show "In Search Of" (with Leonard Nimoy) did a profile on the Amityville story. Remember that show? At the time, I think they were showing clips from the film in the show, and I remember it creeping me out a bit as a kid. But it would be another 20+ years before I would finally get around to watching the film myself for the first time. And yeah that Dawn of the Dead 4K set from Second Sight is tremendous! I highly recommend it if you're a fan. Thanks for watching!
@@TheOriginalFuzz I do remember In Search of and I need to pick up that Second Sight Dawn of the Dead 4K. Alien is one my favorite horror films too couldn't wait to see it in the theater, but missed the release.

I love those Scream factory releases! They turned out great. Especially the first film... the restoration is fantastic.
Which gear do you use to check 4K discs? TV, Projector, Player I mean…
I have several 4k players, but my primary player right now is a Panasonic UB820. TV is just a mid-range 75-inch Samsung 4K panel, so no Dolby Vision for me (yet).
You must have been too young to see the original "Exorcist" in theaters. I went in the Summer where the air conditioning was cranked up to uncomfortably cold in order to cut down on the stench from people barfing up their dinners while watching this flick. The made for TV cut removed a lot of the blood and ugliest sick scenes. I think that the original cut had an X rating as it freaked out a lot of people and not something to eat popcorn while watching.
Yeah I was a bit too young... but I've heard the stories. LOL! I was a toddler when it came out. Can't wait for it to come out on 4K though. It's a great film!

Totally fair point. Honestly, I kind of forgot about it LOL!😆 Or I would've at least included it in my honorable mentions. But it would not have made my personal Top 10 either way, mainly because there are other 4K restorations I wanted to highlight more. But I do like the film -- and I even own it on 4K (the Dark Sky release, not 2nd Sight). In many ways, I actually like TCM2 more than TCM1. If I did an 80s horror list video at some point, TCM2 would probably be on that list.
