  • A short review of the MidiPlus MIDI 4x4. I show the basics of setting up a simple MIDI connection in OS X from the Audio MIDI Setup Utility to getting an external MIDI working in Logic Pro. Then we have fun with Logic Pro and I show a really cool trick on how you can import a MIDI song into Logic Pro and have it play on the Casio LK-100 and all the keys will light up on the keyboard as it is playing.
    I do this for the actual love of music and all I ask is if you will support by subscribing to LogicProHacks and hitting the like button. This helps make more cool Logic Hacks!

    The Casio LK-100 recognizes Channels 1-4, 10 on the input port of the keyboard and channel 1 on the output port. To use General MIDI, turn on GM Mapping (press Song Bank while holding down Rhythm, known as "Rhythm+Song Bank").

      Hmm... very interesting. Thanks for sharing, I was kind of wondering what the exact midi details were for the LK-100.

    Pretty happy with this unit. Little to no latency as far as I can tell. Works with a ridiculously old pc laptop, too.

      Me too! I recently bought another one from Amazon b/c I needed 8-Midi ports of connectivity, for an old Yamaha TX816. I recently got it from Reverb com (Rack unit of 8 DX7 synth modules, 1 Midi port per module) and it works amazingly well. I was expecting to be some kind of clash in having two usb units plugged into my window 10 laptop, but I was able to edit each module without an issue. Granted, they changed the metal casing to something that is cheap b/c it doesn’t feel as nice to the touch, when compared to my first one. The newer one has rough quality to the casing. But other that it still works solid.

      Well it is only sending midi data, and that's been standard since 85-86? If you get a laptop that can't process midi data, that isn't a really old laptop, it's an antique. Haha

    I like outboards cause they don't take CPU and can be complex sounds. I have 3 and I have problems.. 3 flagships from the 90's, 500 sound in each. Yamaha W5, Roland JV1000, JV80. I only had one connected at the time with a 2x2 MIDI. The big JV1000 plays with sustained notes, can't reverse or turn it off. I got no clue. The other 2 works. I have the problem that I don't know how to switch banks. I can switch patches from Logic. W5 got 4 banks but I can't switch between them.
    The other problem is to get audio into Logic. So good if it worked but it's hard to fix everything without having to buy the most expensive extra gear.

      I hear you bro, it's so hard to get everything to sync on a budget, and even when you have the extra money to buy the better gear, you still run into issues that suck you into that never ending vortex of troubleshooting equipment; when all you want to do is just sit down and make music. Granted, I got the MIDI 4x4 for under $50 and my plan is to eventually hook up my Korg Karma, Alesis QuadraSynth, Roland D20 and my E-MU e6400 Ultra Sampler. Then either control or sample parts from each in Logic. I did find a good deal on a Alesis MutiMix Firewire Mixing Board, which will accept all the audio inputs, plus give each one their own channel in Logic. I guess the big challenge will be trying to get all of them to midi sync correctly, It will be fun!

      LogicProHacks I would need at least 3 stereo channels on an audio interface. The multimix sounds good for you then. I have a Mackie 12 ch but that would put all instruments on one track or record them one by one. It could be done since tracking could be done before bouncing only.
      I could possibly listen to things on the computer headphones or audio interface headphones or mixer headphones if I can get everything in there if I also use Logic instruments which I would, plus vocals. I'll see how successful you are.

      I think I had a D20 once. It had that japanese airy flute that was good.

      LogicProHacks does this one give you 4 separate midi tracks into your daw over the usb, or just one channel that will put through any active midi signals coming from the 4 inputs?

      Thank you for letting me know in a language that is beyond my comprehension. From my deciphering with Google Translate, I assume you’re unhappy with my video... That said, this video was designed to be a review and overview of how MIDI works on the Casio, not how to record music with it. I can take special requests, but only from those who are nice to me on RUclips and comment in english.

    Do you know if this can be done with Garageband or Fruity Loops? I don't have Logic Pro. Thanks.

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад

      It should be able too... most DAWs have the ability to send MIDI to an external device. Basically all I really did was create a track and picked the option for external MIDI, picked the external MIDI device, then dropped and dragged a piano MIDI file onto the track and hit play. The hard part is the setup, which I covered in the video, MACs MIDI utility. Once that is done you should be good to go. I hope this helps.

      Thanks for the quick reply. I actually bought a regular MIDI to USB cable, this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C8KX8TH which arrived yesterday. I guess I confused your video with some other ones. Is the 4x4 one necessary for this to work? If not, I'll mess around with the setup some more to figure this out.

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад

      No, you don't need the 4x4... If you break it down. This is like an old player piano. with the old paper chamber-wheels with punch-outs read by a small thin track bar, which are connected to Pneumatic valves that play the piano keys.
      So in that, The DAW, with notes on the track is the paper scroll wheel, the Pneumatic valves could be the digital interface telling the Casio what notes to play; so everything that is being played is coming from the DAW.
      In theory, you would only need one MIDI cable, connected on the out-port on the interface and connected to the in-port on the Casio and the USB connected to the computer. Then don't forget to set the correct midi port-device (name of interface and or Keyboard) and MIDI channel number (which is aways channel 1).
      I think the hard, part is trying to figure out how to create an external midi instrument device. I'm just not sure GarageBand would be a good choice here, as it may not have that feature. FL studio, would, but it would be different. i Again, I hope this helps. Cheers!

    Hi. I'm interested in this device but not sure how it ha dles those 64 channels (MIDI specification is 16 channels). In your daw, with this device, do you see one midi interface with 64 channels or 4 divices with 16? Thanks!

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад +1

      Each midi channel is its own 16 lane superhighway. It doesn’t matter how many highways you connect to your computer.

    • @eduugr
      @eduugr 6 лет назад

      Allright, so when you a new Midi track you can select between 4 different midi "superhighweay" for MIDI IN and MIDI OUT? And each of those 4 will have 16 channels... am I right?
      Thanks for your reply!

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад

      eduugr - yes that is correct, for the midi 4 x 4 which supports a midi in and a midi, out you can have 16 midi channels for each.

    am i supposed to have a driver?

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад

      Nope. It should just show up, especially on a Mac or Windows 7 or newer. Granted, I did notice the will crap out if the USB cable is too long, it just won’t show; so make sure the USB cable is under 6ft. Also, sometimes it doesn’t like to play nice with USB hubs, even the powered ones.

    • @arukubarr9884
      @arukubarr9884 6 лет назад +1

      LogicProHacks its 6ft long but it is hooked up to a usp hub. Ill see if it works if i connect it to the computer. For some reason the keyboard wont show midi going out

    • @arukubarr9884
      @arukubarr9884 6 лет назад

      Also it only comes up as midi controller on devices and not casio somthing

    • @logicprohacks
      @logicprohacks  6 лет назад

      Arukubarr - that’s correct, if note that in the video I had to add in the Casio in the midi utility and then virtually connect its cable to the midi hub.

    • @arukubarr9884
      @arukubarr9884 6 лет назад

      LogicProHacks i have found the problem, for some odd reason when i switched the midi cord to out to in and in to out on the keyboard it works fine.
