Hi, Pete, is there an Apple Lightning "like" adapter for my Amazon Kindle Fire? I don't own Apple products and certainly can't afford to purchase them. I just need the adapter for my Kindle. Thanks. - Robert Lucas
Hey Robert. Really not sure sorry? I'm not familiar with the Kindle Fire and what connection it uses.
@@robertlucas2 You want what's called a USB On the Go cable. Depending on which Fire you, you'll need either a USB A micro cable or a USB C cable.
I already have the cables but it's not working, do I need to run a software or app
Your video is so-o-o useful!! I've got an old YPG-625 Yamaha grand going to waste. I don't have the same back portals as the one featured. Is there a way for me to hook up to my PC similar to the way you describe for the Casio?
I love the way he teaches. Super clear and explains everything on a very basic level without taking too much time/over explaining. He's really easy to listen to!
Thanks Emily. Really appreciate the kind words and glad to hear it.

Bring it on!!!! That’s awesome my friend.
Thanks dude. You have made a dad and a budding musician, son, cello player very happy.

Thank you so much for this video!! Very helpful! My grandpa just gave me a Yamaha PSR-300 (released in 1991 according to my research) that doesn’t have any USB or XLR cable stuff. This video has just helped me use this old keyboard to make my music! Thanks again, Pete! I’m surprised this video was made a year ago! Great job!
Nice one! Very glad to hear it my friend. 👍
Just what I needed to see. I needed a refresher on how to transmit MIDI data to computer via USB, as I haven't dabbled with MIDI in quite a while. Thanks for this posting this video, it answers a lot of questions.

Hey Pete, you NEED to get the Yamaha BT-01. That thing is a game changer. I did a live gig tonight using AUM for the first time (I preset 7 or 8 plugins that I would choose between for sounds). Triggered using Bluetooth MIDI and everything worked perfectly. For those interested, the Yamaha BT-01 is definitely worth the investment! (I do not get paid by Yamaha. LOL)...

Now that’s outside my wheelhouse I’m afraid.
Lol, I had some problems with my old keyboard and started googling, came up here and see you have the exact same keyboard :'). I still hear noises i don't play in my DAW and it doesn't react as it should.
How to enable the midi mode on that keyboard ?
Hey there. Are you using the Edirol or Roland adapter cable? It's been a while, but I don't think there is anything you need to do to enable MIDI on the Casio, but it doesn't seem to like any of the cheaper MIDI to USB cables.
Nicely done! Thanks so much for this. I'd been avoiding keyboard-oriented plug-ins for my DAW because I didn't have a MIDI controller and I'm watching the budget. My Yamaha CVP-401 has 5-pin MIDI in and out, so as soon as my USB adapter shows up in the mail, I'll be off to the races.
Nice one! Yes, it’s super handy. Just make sure it’s paired with the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter for full reliability and compatibility.
@@PeteJohnsMusic I'll be using a Windows 11 PC, so no worries. Thanks again.

Yeah it’s a great way to give some new life to your older keyboards. Maybe look for a new power adapter though.

Midi over USB is more efficient, easier to plumb and can avoid having to use separate power supplies for each device than traditional Midi. However it does requires a USB host to work. For the majority of us that will be a USB hub attached to a computer. The hub is a ingle point of failure unless you spend the money on an an interface that has failover capability. Midi cables and Midi devices also fail but when it happens it’s easy to put another cable in place or plumb around whatever has failed. Lose the USB hub and well good luck. So carry a spare and maybe a few old school Midi cables just in case.
Yup. Good tips.

Silly question but is it better to use midi 5 port cables that connect to USB, or using midi to midi that plugs in to the back of audio interface? I plan on using my Yamaha keyboard to play in Ableton and Studio 1-4. Great video !
Hey there. So, really doesn’t make much difference in my experience. Direct USB MIDI seems to be the best option most of the time but the Edirol/Roland adapter is really good and super low latency.

Hey Pete, I have a piano with Midi In/Out. I know the Midi Out is working 100%, never used Midi In yet so I can't say for sure but I assume it also works. Questions:
1) Can I connect such a cable to only the piano's midi out, essentially only connecting one of the midi ends?
2) Does the USB light on yours light up already when you only have the USB connected but not the midi? Reason I'm asking is because I got a similar (but different brand) cable yesterday simply can't get it to work at all. None of the LEDs are lighting up at all. I tried different USB ports on my PC already and also on my tablet.
Hey there. Yes, you can totally use for just MIDI out from a keyboard. That’s how I use mine.
And the issue with it not working? I’ve found that cheaper cables are super unreliable which is why I recommend the Roland/Edirol version. It’s a little more expensive but everyone I’ve recommended it to has had success.
Hi Pete. Thank you for this video. Im using midi to usb cables on an older Yamaha arias digitize piano. My issue is the sustain pedals are playing notes in GarageBand. How do I fix this? Thank you kindly.
Oh?! That’s a weird one. I’ve heard of sustain working backwards, needing a sustain pedal with a polarity switch.. but not playing notes? Maybe ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group? studiolivetoday.com/gbu
Thanks, for information been looking for this for my casio ct 700 and do you think it will be able to work with my casio?
If the Casio sends standard general MIDI you’ll be fine. 👍😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic
Hey Pete.
I also have a casio 700. Would I plug into my Focusrite 2i2/3rd gen. Interface? Just wondering.
Using an iPad Pro. And a Yamaha sg2 silent piano. It has midi in/out. If I have a HyperDrive hub in the iPad Pro, will this midi in/ out with a usb on the other end work to connect the Yamaha to the iPad Pro. Seems like a no brainer. But that’s me, no brainer Dave.
Hmmmm..... sometimes the only way to really know for sure is to try it out. There’s so many different ways to connect things and so much different gear it’s impossible to guarantee for sure.
Yeah, I’ll go ahead with those 2 devices and see if it works. The hub is a good idea any way. Thanks!

Hello! Thanks for the video. I have a Roland PC-200. it only has a midi out, and i just ordered the Roland um-one. Im wondering if it will work to control my midi instruments in Ableton with only one of the midi cords plugged in. any idea?
Yup. 100%. If you just want to send data from your keyboard or controller to your recording app then all you need is MIDI out. 👍
Hi. Thanks for the video. I have two questions: if the midi out of the device has phantom power will the adapter work? And if the device only has midi out and not midi in, will the adapter work with one of the plugs not connected?
It does work with just the MIDI out and in being used as many more modern MIDI keyboards only have one. MIDI doesn't ever send phantom power in my experience, but I'm far from an expert.
looking at using the old piano for playground sessions for learning.
This may work for that.
Piano is aTechnics KN 2000 PCM Keyboard.....
Hey there. It should indeed as long as it has a standard 5-pin MIDI output jack.
No way. I have the exact same keyboard and for the life of me I haven't been able to figure it out. I figured out how to enable midi mode but it still doesn't work. The usb midi interface doesn't light up soo it's an issue with the keyboard and not the software. My manual is long since gone and it's a pain in the ass to get a digital one from their website. They also have forums that are completely devoid of any information.
Mine is KN3000, it didn't work.
What a wonderfully simple set-up! Thanks

Hi there. I'm looking at buying an Akai MPC49, a midi controller, which has its usb-c port broken. It does however have a working midi in and out. Was wondering if these steps would be what I need to do for an old midi keyboard with the usb not working?

Does your TRANSPOSE function of your Yamaha Keyboard also work on the MIDI CONNECTED to Android
It should? Haven’t tried sorry.
Can I do this to also connect and control a newer MIDI keyboard (stack them) with an older keyboard?
Depends on the device you’re using and the software. Things like GarageBand iOS only support one MIDI input device at a time. Others allow multiple.
Do the MIDI to USB converters generally introduce any lag? It doesn't look like your setup in the video has much lag, if any. But even a small amount can be annoying.
The cheaper ones can introduce quite a lot of latency, but the more advanced and higher quality ones like the Roland are actually surprisingly low latency. 👍
Great job can you tell me how to install an apps from my iPhone thanks
Not sure what you’re asking sorry? You can download and install apps via the App Store.
I bought an old Roland hp 1300e. the keys are velocity sensitive, will the velocity hits translate into my daw? Or will it be stagnant?
It comes with a sustain pedal as well
Yeah most DAWs support the whole 0-127 velocity range when connected via MIDI.

Hey there my friend. Sorry for the delayed response. I like Kawai, Yamaha and Casio pianos. You really can't go wrong these days with any brands. This cable will work great to convert the standard MIDI in and out ports to USB so that part won't be an issue as long as you pick up one of these.
