Is there a difference between the quality of these 2 options:
    - USB connection from keyboard to phone/computer
    - keyboard - interface - phone/computer
The sound of my recordings from keyboard to my phone (in garageband) via USB cable sounds terrible

  • @ralphpezda6523

I have a question about hooking up multiple midi devices at the same time. Ex. 1. OUT on device 1 goes to IN on device two. OUT on device 2 goes to IN on device 1. Everything works fine.
Ex 2. Now I want to connect three keyboards on the same chain. Do I just use OUT 1 to IN 2, then OUT 2 to IN 3, then back up the chain? Or do I chain devices 1 & 2 as indicated above and then use midi thru from device 1 or 2 to control device 3? I have successfully connected two Roland keyboards using the first as a controller for the second (as I described in the first example). What midi connects to I make to access keyboard 3 (or sound module like Integra 7), and from which keyboard? To keep it simple I have omitted using an interface or computer for this question.
Ex 3. (Question) What would I use midi thru for and how?
    Thank you for your response.

I have an IPad and an iPhone with a Roland Go Keys like you mentioned, I connected my keyboard to my (GarageBand) iPhone with Bluetooth, is it possible to connect my keyboard to my IPad as well but using a lightning usb with an android cord to the keyboard (usb), when i tried it out the keys from the Roland Go Keys on keyboard kept playing loud (I wanted GarageBand) with Roland piano sample keys going off when I press the key, how does the keyboard connect to IPad with headphones with only the GarageBand samples sounds being heard when I press the keys?❤ wonderful video by the way🎉

Good Video and I’m glad that you had made this video because I’m a Beginner my small set up includes a MacBook Pro 💻, a 4Port Hub a M-Audio MK3 Key Station midi controller that has usb & 1 Midi output & yesterday I had got my Akai MPD218 midi controller that has a USB connection a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Generation audio interface a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones 🎧 a Rod pod mic & a pair of Silver Rokit KRK monitors. After looking at your video I’m going to end up ordering the Roland Um-one mk2 cords specifically to use with a external MIDI Sound Module like The Roland JV-1080 which has the MIDI in & Midi out connection which I will end up buying off of EBay or Guitar 🎸 Center. My question to you is how do I connect my USB midi controller that has a MIDI out with my Akai MPD218 USB Pad midi Controller ? My guess is to connect both to my 4port hub that is connected to my MacBook Pro 💻 Mid 2012 that’s my guess but I need to know how I can get the sounds loaded into my keyboard 🎹 controller & my Akai MPD218 USB midi Pad controller? Cause I’m thinking about starting out with Ableton live lite since it comes free with both of my midi controllers & not only that I don’t want to use Akai’s MPC Beats Software that comes with their controller simply because Ableton is the better & easier program to learn do you agree? Any advice will be appreciated. Marc

Great video thanks! So if I have a keyboard without MIDI ports, just USB to host (USB-B) and I want to use that as a controller for a keyboard that has MIDI ports - will the adapter cable you mention work in that direction as well? I have a different brand of the same kind of cable and I tried getting that to work without much success (wasn't sure if that cable should work in both directions)

Hi there! your tutorials are awesome. I bought the Roland UM-ONE MK2. I connected the Midi In to Midi Out on my keyboard. I followed the connection diagram on your article. I downloaded the driver previously. I open Chordie App and it doesn't receive any input from my keyboard. I selected UM-ONE on the Midi Input Menu. I plugged in a midi controller with a usb cable and worked right away with the app. I don't understand what I did wrong

Hi. I find your videos super easy to follow. I have a question...I am buying a new MIDI controller keyboard to use with my guitars and mics, all conneted to an auio interface. My interface has 5 pin. Most of the new contollers do not have 5 pin midi ports, only usb to computer. If I want to connect guitar, keys and mic, should I just plug keyboard into laptop alongside interface? Or get an adapter to convert 5 pin to usb?

Would you consider making a video on how to set up Bluetooth keyboard for recording in logic?
I have the Roland Go piano (with Alexa). I want to record the piano, but I keep hooking the piano up as a speaker instead of an input. I don't see that option so I'm not sure if it isn't capable, or if I'm making a mistake somehow :/ LOVE YOUR CHANNEL BTW! :)

Hi, Thanks. I also have a Go Piano, you cannot record the sound of it using the Bluetooth, only make a MIDI connection, or as you have discovered, you can playback computer audio via the piano speakers. The only way to record the sound is via a cable.

My question is, I will be connecting with the Voker from the usb port of a Yamaha Genos directly to the Ipad Mini 2, but you often make reference to the Ipad needing it's own power source, but how can I do this if the Voker plugs directly into the only port that I also use for recharging, or can I assume that power is being supplied from the MIDI keyboard to the Ipad if connected in this way? Can you also please tell me if this would also work with FL Studio? Many thanks in advance

Can I ask a question? How many MIDI cables are needed when connecting a MIDI keyboard to a sound card?
Is a single cable sufficient between the MIDI keyboard out connection and the MIDI in connection of the sound card? Then the sound card will be connected to the PC.

So here my question (sorry if it sounds stupid): If I connect my synths to a controler (Roland Fantom), it should be enough for me to connect the MIDI/USB from the controler into the interface and from the interface to the computer (using the DAW as a mixer) and then the audio from all keyboards into the interface to the speakers? I just bought my Fantom and next step is the DAW (most likely Logic). I have never used an interface and I'm afraid my old school ways of doing things (way back in the 80s and 90s) is not how things are done today. So I am a little bit confused.

I have a Yamaha PSR-E443, Akai MPD26 DrumPad that has a Midi in and Out inputs & USB 2 0 & MacBook Pro Mid 2012, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Second Generation audio interface & a USB Turntable and I am thinking about getting a Round JV-1080 Sound module which has the 5 pin Midi in & Midi outputs & a pair of KRK Classic Rokit 5 G3 Monitors.
My issue is that I'm thinking about buying the $200 M-Audio Keystation 61- Key Controller, because I heard that a lot of Yamaha PSR- Electronic keyboards don't recognize and support a lot of DAW'S like PreSonus studio One, MPC BEATS, Logic Pro.

However, I could not find the right one to connect. I just want to confirm it’s the 5 pin male - 5 pin male cable that I need to connect the keyboard to Duo I/O. Or I need something else. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I think the iRig Pro Duo has 5-pin DIN MIDI port? In which case yes

Hi Jane, as always, Music Repo comes through with an extremely clear, concise and complete video. My question - what do you recommend for connecting both old pro equipment (my vintage Yamaha SY99 synth has MIDI In, Out and THRU) and a just -purchased Yamaha keyboard that features USB connectivity for MIDI hook up? Can I connect them both in some way? Using a new M1 Macbook Pro... cheers, and keep up the brilliant videos!

Thank you very much for your informative videos. I have two Yamaha keyboards the E373 and the DGX670 both have USB to Host A B connections. I would like to know if it is possible to connect these two keyboards together via a USB Female to Female adapter to share Memory Registrations OR Styles from the E373 to the DGX670?

Thank you for your informations. I have a question about my yamaha clavinova clp 230 model digital piano. I have also download the driver for windows 8 from Yamaha website. This piano has also usp port on it. I plug in cable to usp port on piano and the other part on pc. 1. How can I test the result? Just one cable is enough for work? I have audocity program on pc. 2. And Can I plug in clp 230 piano to iPhone garageband? Does it directly works with camera adaptor?

This was really helpful! Which app do you recommend just for sound ? I literally just want to press the keys on my piano and hear the sound, I don’t need to see which notes are being played or need to compose or anything like that. Ideally, I could just connect my keyboard to a Bluetooth speaker, but unfortunately, I don’t have a Bluetooth keyboard. Thanks!

Thanks for the video - I do admit that it’s a bit frustrating - I do have the Roland UM-ONE but my MacBook running Ableton with the latest OS (Catalina) doesn’t recognize MIDI from my keyboard .. and I suspect it’s an OS incompatibility issue.... I’m not sure if I need to just wait to Roland to release a driver or what I should do!?!?

I want to purchase a digital piano or midi keyboard and use Kontakt 6 Native Instruments for the piano sample library. Do I have to use a laptop or iPad to download Kontakt 6 piano library or can I download that on my phone?
Thanks. I am a newbie! 😊 I want to buy a digital piano/midi though, but at the same time a midi keyboard is inexpensive. Please tell me what I should do. Thank you.

I'm a PC user with a Yamaha cvp 701 digital piano. Love the instrument but not the small display screen. The 701 has midi in and out and a square connector for a USB cable. Is there any way to connect the 701 to a TV? I have several and that would solve my display frustration. Thanks!

Thanks for doing this. I recently purchased a Roland FP-30x with the belief that I could use it as a controller for GarageBand in a Mac. For years I used a keyboard that had midi ports which I ran through a Steinberg Audio interface. However, using the Bluetooth Midi connection, it doesn't appear that there is a way to get a signal from the piano to the Mac. I can play music from my Mac to the piano speakers (not a function that I'm interested in), but I cannot get the piano to send a signal to the Mac. My next solution is a USB cord which I was hoping to avoid. Any thoughts? Is there a setting that I am missing? Thanks!

Thank you for your very useful video. I wonder if you could explain something to me. I have an old Yamaha PF15 which I like to use with a separate sound module (Roland Sound Canvas) for better sound options. What I haven't been successful to do so far is to connect the two devices to my computer so while I use the keyboard as the controller, I use the module as the sound source. How shall I connect the devices to input music into a DAW from the keyboard and be able to use the sounds from the external module? Many thanks.

Hi. I have a older keyboard (Korg M50) that has both USB and two 9-pin MIDI outputs on it. I tried to connect it to iPad via USB using the Apple camera adapter but the keyboard sound does not go into Garageband and it does not work as a keyboard controller. I'm wondering if using the MIDI outputs would work??? Do think that either using the Roland UM-One cable or going from MIDI into the Focusrite AI would allow me to use the Korg as a Keyboard controller?

I tried recording on the keyboard, but as mentioned in the manual
    1. connect Go Keys via mini usb port to my mac
    2. copy the files in the Backup folder
But when I open the midi file, mac opens the GarageBand app and the piano sound turns into organ sound ...
I used Piano+Pad to play in the keyboard. If I replay it from the keyboard, it sounds fine.
how do I get the file that produces the one I hear from the keyboard?

You just need a USB lead, and follow the instructions in the manual to make a MIDI connection. You can then use the keyboard to record MIDI tracks in Ableton or similar ...

Hello! I have an Akai Pro MPC key 61 and I’m trying to route the midi cord from my keyboard through my interface (Focusrite 4i4). I can’t get any sound to come from the keyboard however.
Do I need 2 midi cables-one each for the IN and OUT port to run from my keyboard to the interface, or just the 1 going from the keyboard OUT to the interface IN?
Hope I’m not confusing you. Thank you!
