      @@sthetraveler1748 I highly recommend going straight from your iOS device -> USB camera connection kit w/ charging part -> Powered USB Hub -> to the rest of your setup
      This should help with any hum or noise interference along with adding flexibility to your current setup.

    Great video - I have a 5-year-old at home that I wanted to expose him to musical instruments. He started piano lessons this year but due to COVID-19 - we had to stop his lessons. With how fast technology is changing, learning how to play, edit, and manipulate sounds on midi keyboards opens a lot of possible learning opportunities. (I'm not a musician & I don't know how to play any instruments) - my question is if he started to learn on the small midi keyboard, could those principles be transferred onto playing on a traditional piano? Thanks in advance with any feedback -- Stay safe.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 года назад +1

      Cool! Yes, the notes will be the same on larger keys/piano, the keys may be larger and the weight of the keys may be different but the notes will translate properly. There will just be more of them.

    • @DavidHHermanson
      @DavidHHermanson 4 года назад

      I have to respectfully disagree. If the goal is to learn piano, I strongly suggest using a "fully weighted" or "hammer action" keyboard. I'm reasonably sure his piano teacher would agree. These keyboards will teach the same skills, hand and finger muscles needed for used on a real piano. Ideally the keyboard should be 88 keys, but 61 will work if $$ is an issue.
      Kids who learn on the light mechanism of the "synth action" or "semi-weighted" keys of many midi keyboards have a much more difficult time transferring to a piano. Playing these kinds of keyboard teaches the learner too many bad habits. Try to have it set up at the same height as a piano keyboard (~28.5 inches) and use a ~19 inch high stool or chair (for a five year old a taller chair might be needed). All these help in learning proper muscle memory and accustoming the body to real pianos.
      I'm a classically trained musician and use an expensive Kawai stage piano connected to an iPad that keeps me in practice for using a real piano. While you don't need to pay for a top of the line stage piano, if you spend a little more now, it will be an instrument your child will be able to continue on while growing up. Look for the better Casio, Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, Akai or Novation keyboards offering "fully weighted," "hammer action," or "graded hammer action" keys. Nearly all electronic keyboards these days are equipped with MIDI, which allows connection to an iPad as SoundsAndGear suggests, though many will come with piano sounds built in. However their are many piano teaching programs for iPad. His teacher can probably help with this.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 года назад +1

      @@DavidHHermanson The principles will translate, the weight and actual feel of the keys will obviously be different as mentioned. Consider the question being asked, and why. Not everyone wants to go out and purchase a hammer action keyboard right now.

    • @DavidHHermanson
      @DavidHHermanson 4 года назад

      @@SoundsAndGear Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate your excellent channel here, and the work you put into it. I think I did consider the question. Before COVID they were taking their child to lessons. I tried to suggest that a greater investment is worth the money if the goal is to learn the piano. I no longer teach, but when I did (at a children's music program of a small conservatory) everyone teaching piano gave this same advice. It's very difficult to teach fingering drills on a 25 key MIDI board, and synth style actions lead kids into really bad habits. Young piano students --age 5 to 9-- are great. They're at a developmental stage that allows very rapid acquisition of muscle memory and very quick learning. That's the time for parents to make the investment (and the commitment to lessons). If money's a problem, buying a demo or used keyboard from a reputable store or online is the way to save. For exanple, I've seen low-end fully weighted Yamaha Piaggero's and Casio Privia's sell for under $200 used or open box on Reverb, Sam Ash or B&H,
      Regardless of this , thanks again for the great job you do here on YT. The lessons and advice you give in your videos is consistently first rate.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 года назад +2

      @@DavidHHermanson I get it, that's why I mentioned less keys/weight. However, I try to answer people's questions as asked because there is usually a reason they are asking about specific things. A small MIDI keyboard is better than nothing at all imo. And though not the same, certain things can still translate even if it's just being familiar with where the notes are. Thanks.

    Since i am new to all of this, may I please ask you a question?

    How do I go about? Thank you kindly! Groetjes from Amsterdam

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching. So, with iphone 11, there isn't a headphone jack obviously, you'd have to use bluetooth headphones to hear what you're playing. To connect your keyboard you'd need to have the proper cables, which depends on how your keyboard works. You may need a MIDI interface, you may need an audio interface, or one that does both. If you connected an audio interface you could connect your headphones to that.

      I have a similar question and not sure if this was fully resolved. I have Alesis vortex wireless and I can connect the dongle through apple lightening cable to generate sound on the I phone xsmax. Issue now is how to amplify the sound since there is no 3.5mm port. The charging part of the lightening cable won’t recognise a 3.5mm auxiliary cable as well, since I guess, it is for charging only. Please help.

      The keyboard should work as long as you have a usb hub, you'll have to check the specs on it. If you have a headphone output you can get a splitter cable to run the audio out to your PA, mixer, or whatever.
