I have hated Akinu since he killed all the kids that were trying to escape the buster call at clover island in Robin’s back story. I hope he dies sometime in this series!
Since I saw you wondering why Ace got hurt, the answer is Haki. EDIT: OK, I see the confusion, so logia users with observation haki can predict the attacks, and change form accordingly, that is why Akainu and Aokiji didn't get hurt even when they were attacked with haki. Ace wasn't that experienced with his logia form, unfortunately (or maybe he was, but he had to stop Akainu somehow)
The stakes have become higher and higher now we truly see the top, and how grim and dangerous the top and these marines are. And yes Akainu is a super asshole🤬 and a psycho. Akainu's power is a Logia and a counter to Ace, his magma can consume and control flame.
Ace's death is not the saddest part of this moment. It was Luffy's reaction to it. He's been getting his ass handed to him since Sabaody, getting separated from his crews, trying everything to reach Ace and finally rescue him only to have Ace die in his arms. Poor Luffy ಥ_ಥ
Yeah but sadly it's the only way people like him learn. If someone just told him flat out "your not ready for the new world. You'll get destroyed easily" he would have just yelled something like "That's not for you to decide!" Luffy is a great guy but he's also one of those bullheaded anime protagonist's.
You are right about the death not being highlighted or a real thing until now. I think thats on purpose to make it way more impactful and emotional. We went from having no hope to having hope and then it just being taken away immediately. This episode was major whiplash but looking back I don't think I could ever forget how i felt when it happened.
In the end, it all comes down to how we live and how we die. Ace lived a great life. He found a family with Luffy, with Garp and with Whitebeard and his crew. He had great adventures. And he died a good death, having saved his brother's life, in his brother's arms, with his life's dream fulfilled.
Agree , and he died after finding out his purpos of life (wether he deserves to live) and as a free man , also he had his final moments with his brother and thanked his brother for loving him .
I can't even imagine how pissed Devi would be at Oda if she knew that he had Ace's fate set in stone from the very moment the character was first introduced....
When you re-read the first half of One Piece until Marineford, you realize that Ace is a character that was on an arc to die. - In Drum we learn that a pirate named BB destroyed Drum island - In Arabasta we meet Ace who is pursuing BB (he also gives Luffy the vivre card) - In Jaya we meet BB who is clearly established as a reversed mirror of Luffy and we see Shanks trying to get in contact with WB - In Ennies Lobby we see that Shanks is worried about Ace (saying that it's too soon for him to fight BB) followed by BB vs Ace hinting at a big event - In Thriller Bark we learn that Ace was arrested and BB became a warlord - In Marineford we learn that Ace was a prime candidate to become King of Pirates but unfortunately he dies. At the end of the first half of One Piece (SPOILER) : Luffy is at his lowest and BB is at his highest. While Ace, the main candidate for PK besides these two, has been eliminated. Honestly, it's amazing storytelling.
When I first saw this episode, I cried like crazy since it hits much harder when you're the older sibling in your family. I always loved Ace whenever I saw him cause he had that badass and chill vibe. After watching this episode, I want to be like Ace, willing to protect their little siblings from any danger.
As a fellow Matthew and older brother I agree completely, growing up I was pretty horrible to my little brother at times, but when he was in trouble and people were threatening him, I did anything to protect him.
it’s actually felt up until the current arc. it’s like a chunk of One Piece has been stolen from us. Which the same feeling Luffy is feeling for sure, but he tries to be as positive as possible.
Ace serves such an incredibly important role in this grand story. Oda is a masterful writer and he played it out just right to truly get the full effect of the character. Ace is the linchpin that transitions the story into an EVEN GRANDER story, without him it would have been much harder to go from point A to point B. Im being a little vague on purpose but if you know then you know.
My favorite take I've heard on this goes something like: Ace spent his whole life trying to figure out if he was even valued, and in the moments after realizing the value of his life, he willingly gives it to save his brother. Extremely sad but also has a sense of beauty to it.
There's a weird duality in the fandom. Some fans will say that nobody (major) dies in the present time, but also spoil others that Ace dies. Glad to see that you made it here without the biggest spoiler of One Piece! I got spoiled but still felt all stages of grief in Marineford
I was spoiled that he died but always assumed it happened post timeskip since I’ve never seen an anime rescue arc where the one being rescued died by the end of the arc so it hit me like a freight train
I’m so glad you all weren’t spoiled on this. Death is supposed to be emotional that’s why you don’t kill off every side character. One of the most impactful moments in one piece and a pivotal moment in Luffy growth as a character
Ace death sets the stone for Luffy to grow up. It was necessary. The realization that he can't protect anyone (Ace and even his own crew, back at sabaody) at his stage right now. From EP 1 until the thriller bark arc, luffy were W after W until these last 3 majors arcs - Sabaody - Impel Down and Marineford. He needs to get hit so hard that from this day forward, it will not be going to be as easy. It was sad af but this is definitely a good writing from a character development and story telling stand point. Marineford arc is just increadibly sad and amazing at the same time.
Me still crying after my 1000000th watching this scene, great reaction as always, you guys are absolutely the best reactors out there just by your analysis & discussion, predicition and pure reaction
Even 10+ years later it still hurts Even when I listen to Ace’s character song he says at the end “thank you for loving me” I like start bawling even though his son is such a bop 😭 Also if you’ve noticed all who have had the initial D have died with a smile so far
Logia Devil Fruits were thought by fans to make the users invincible, but it was nice to see that they do have a weakness. Logia users become living elemental incarnates; but here it showed Logias can be fatally injured if they're overwhelmed by similar elemental affinities by an elemental hierarchy. In this case that while fire & magma are similar, the power-clash of the Element of Fire is Inferior and would lose to the Element of Magma. In case of people wanting to confirm; the devil fruit power hierarchy is officially talked about in SBS Volume 79; but I guess if anything in technicality that it is sorta touched upon in mainly ch 573 (and partial 574 as slightly carries on in minimal talk)
Just like his last words, Ace has no regrets in life. He lived his life fully, with his own crew, the Spade pirates, and then with Whitebeard. All along he already had the answer to his question with his found family. It's just that it took this war, this rescue, for him to fully realize it at the end. That's why he dies with a smile. As a viewer/reader, we kind of see the world of One Piece through Luffy's eyes. So all this setup, from Sabaody, to Impel Down, to Marineford, to losing Ace. Failure after failure... It shows us/Luffy how crushing the reality of the world is and how not ready Luffy actually is to face the big players. It's a painful painful lesson. That's what hurts the most.

Can't count how many times I've watched this episode, still makes me cry so much. This is the most heart breaking death in the anime history to me.. Aceee 😭😭
I just remembered Devi mentioned writing Akainu’s name down during Robin’s backstory, cause she felt like he might be something in the future. He was the one who blew up the evacuation ship. It would’ve been awesome if they remembered talking about doing that! When she said that I was thinking, YES write it down!! Lol
Great video, guys! I once heard that Oda's take on Luffy's fighting style is not about killing his oponents. It's about killing their dreams. If you look at all the enemies he's defeated, getting their dreams crushed was more painful than death.
I was rewatching One Piece with a friend who was watching it for the first time. When we arrived at Luffy's post-war childhood arc, my 5-year-old sister ended up dying from drowning. Seeing Luffy suffering broke me from the inside out, but seeing the happy moments he spent with Ace comforted me a lot.
Ace in the ho-nvm. Seriously though. I remember coming back from school and reading this when it came out in the manga. No one expected Ace to die, especially since people rarely die in this show. Rip :(
"If by any chance, even a single scholar was hiding on that ship, every single sacrifice we made today would have been wasted" He said "every single sacrifice we made today", I think Akainu still feels bad about it, even a little
The way Ace falls was painful and I applaud the director of this episode for showing it in that way. It's a painful wake up call to the viewers and Luffy that the world of pirates does not care who you are, how much you have suffered and want something to go your way. Oda crafted a Shakespearean tragedy since the introduction of Ace and Blackbeard that culminated in that very moment.
As hard and heartbreaking as it is to take in the fact that Ace dies here, gotta admit the event is such a key component to setting up so many epic and satisfying story moments in the many episodes to come, even in the current anime arc.
if you remember back in robin's backstory, the evacuation ship that exploded with all of ohara's citizens was done so at the command of "vice admiral sakazuki", akainu's been a demon since day one
The song playing when Ace collapses is called "Maya's Strong Feelings". It is rarely used in the series. In over 1000 episodes it's played only seven times. I think the last time we've heard it is in Zou. Perhaps it has been retired, but they might be waiting for a suitable scene to use it again. It will always be Ace's scene that comes to mind when I hear it, though.
Ace had his doubt because his pirate crew didn't knew about his past aside from WB and a few other (read the Ace novel or manga) But he doesn't doubt the love that Garp, Luffy, Sabo and Dadan have for him BUT the thing is that those are like his only family prior to Whitebeard taking him as his son. Him dying is basically Oda's way of showing us that not everyone with potential can reliazed that full potentail and most importantly it was for Luffy to grow Marineford is truly goated
Its very sad but also heartwarming. Look at how many people showed up and started a war with the world government just for one mans life. That speaks volumes of how much ace was loved❤.
I remember how i got destroyed by this scene and i needed to wait for 7 whole days for the next episode and i couldnt contain myself and red the manga for my emotional wellbeing
Two most popular female channels that was reacting to OP back in the day, Jamie SMF and AllonaSharee did a 2 week break after this episode. I heard that one of them was even scared of coming back to OP because of potential next traumatizing pain that might happen. R.I.P Ace.
It's awesome that in a way, ace is so similar to whitebeard, they both not want the fame rather a family to value and could value them. Not to stand at the top but to find meaning to their lives, their very own reason to sail. And they set off together in a sad way but with their dream fulfilled, Rest in Peace 😢😢.
Going Merry took me about 2 weeks to recover. Ace to this day I could never recover from his death and that was 10+ years ago when I first started One Piece.
I've been waiting for this ever since I followed you all those years ago. Ace's death has been the most tragic incident in the series, even till today. This was the only time when our Luffy, who is always smiling, broke down and couldn't stand back up. They even have Aceand whitebeard tribute graves made in Japan. Rest in peace Ace, you deserve the world ;-; Your fire shall always burn strong in the hearts of your brother and everyone who once knew you 🔥 ❤
And what Devi said about leading up to death. That's what makes a One Piece death so much worse.... death happens, sometimes without warning.... just like in life.
In the One Piece community, it had long been a running gag that "nobody important dies in One Piece except in flashbacks." Then the Marineford happened. Ace died, and the community was in shock. Suddenly, the stakes were a lot more serious; named characters, important characters, could die, despite everyone's best efforts. And speaking of efforts: Luffy saved Ace. Yes, Ace still died in the end, but that's not on Luffy. Luffy did everything he could, and then he did more. He pushed himself to his limits and beyond, again and again and again. As far as blame goes, blame Ace for being too stubborn and prideful to ignore Akainu's insults. Blame Akainu himself for striking the killing blow. Blame the World Government and the Navy for trying to execute someone solely based on who their father was. But I don't blame Luffy; I feel so sorry for him. All of his efforts, all of his sacrifices...and his brother still died in his arms.
We are finally seeing your reactions here... man, he is so tough and still didnt cry lol! 😂 but this is the first time i saw him this serious.. whenever there is an emotional scene he smiles but in this scene where ace spoke, he is serious and i thought there is slight redness in his eyelids... 😁
Yeah this is one of the deaths in anime that I didn’t expect either. Ace will forever be one of the characters the community will always ask “what if”.
CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HAPPENED... ACE!! 😭😭He deserved better! My heart.... 💔

Ace of Spades represents DEATH you know, ODA set us up from the beginning.
The Fact that they know that nothing dies in One Piece and they still love the show so much. The One Piece has so much power man.
I remember how i got destroyed by this scene and i needed to wait for 7 whole days for the next episode and i couldnt contain myself and red the manga for my emotional wellbeing
Best donut 🍩 maker for a reason!
How much would you want your MC to suffer ?
Oda : Yes.
Oda said that it’s time for some real character development for Luffy when he started writing Sabaody
When they say anime is just for kids, I show them this scene.
Oda had been saving up all his Death Writing for this moment, this Arc, just to foist it all on you all at once.
When Garp was saying he would kill akainu... he was not joking
Two most popular female channels that was reacting to OP back in the day, Jamie SMF and AllonaSharee did a 2 week break after this episode.
I heard that one of them was even scared of coming back to OP because of potential next traumatizing pain that might happen.
R.I.P Ace.
8:50 please remember that scene
When Luffy cried, that's when I cried. I really cried tears of grief and sorrow.
I was mad and cried too when the first time watching this and feel empty
Going Merry took me about 2 weeks to recover. Ace to this day I could never recover from his death and that was 10+ years ago when I first started One Piece.
Ace is first death? Yo gold roger, belmere, hiluluk, noland, tom and all character from backstories? :D
All of them were from past
Wow they actually stop watching one piece after this episode 😂
I've been waiting for this ever since I followed you all those years ago.
Ace's death has been the most tragic incident in the series, even till today.
This was the only time when our Luffy, who is always smiling, broke down and couldn't stand back up.
They even have Aceand whitebeard tribute graves made in Japan.
Rest in peace Ace, you deserve the world ;-;
Your fire shall always burn strong in the hearts of your brother and everyone who once knew you 🔥 ❤
I saw this episode a mouth ago. Yea plot is really something, whole anime and characters feels like family
Dude the guy who did ace tattoo is a former starbucks employee. Lol he mispelled ACE to ASE then cross out the S then add C.. hahahha
MarineFord is hands down still the best arc and I am up to date in manga chapters.
What a profound answer to a profound question
And what Devi said about leading up to death. That's what makes a One Piece death so much worse.... death happens, sometimes without warning.... just like in life.
Damn... Looks like there will be no feast after this arc...
In the One Piece community, it had long been a running gag that "nobody important dies in One Piece except in flashbacks."
Then the Marineford happened.
Yo she is pissed!!!lmaooooo........this is awesome writting oda knows how to touch a nerve.
Just a reminder that 'Akainu' is the same Sakazuki vice admiral in the Ohara incident
Yeah this is one of the deaths in anime that I didn’t expect either. Ace will forever be one of the characters the community will always ask “what if”.
theres this quote that really soothed me, "one piece can't handle two kings".
This scene was so much more emotional in the English dub
said no one ever
The fact that Sengoku tried to stop Garp. He knew that Garp can destroy Akainu without a sweat.
Every time I watch anyone's reaction this scene makes me traumatised so frikken badd bro dammit
Dammit no matter how many times I’ve watched this episode, Ace’s death still hits me like the first time.
Damn.. that death always hits me.. I think I ugly cry everytime I see it
