I used to play the tin whistle for forty years but I had a stroke. I lost all the finesse in my left fingers so I could not release and reseal the holes with the left hand. I knew about tabor pipes but this instrument has proved to be a revelation as it only needs a working right hand (and a lot of skill).
Hi. Bless you man. I am sorry that you can't fully enjoy your tin whistle. Yes, koncovka is grate alternative. Thank you for your comment and I hope your hand will GET BETTER SOON! All the best. :)
Hello! I live on the west coast of the united states, and I saw a comment you posted on someone's hand made attempt at making a Koncovka, and I am curious if you would be willing to share any information of how to make Konovka and Fujara? I am particularly curious about what kind of bits to buy or forge for hollowing out the center, as well as for calculating measurements, angles of the fipple, where the holes should be on a fujara.... anyway, I hope this finds you well! Beautiful work.
It's very simple to make one all you need are long enough hand-drills and dry wood. Process of making it is mostly about trying, there isn't something as correct angle or correct size of flute's ,,window" although one Slovak guy actually published his experience with making koncovka and fujara. I personally have experience only with making these flutes out of PVC pipes and they sounds quite decent. If you are still interested in making one feel free to contact me and I can give you translations of that guy's publications.
Hi, great work! Ive been making irish low whistles out of aluminium tube and my next project im hoping to make a koncovka flute out of blackthorn. If my bore is 20mm how long would i need make it in the key of D? I didnt want to go by standard irish flute measurements and get it wrong before ive started haha. Thankyou for the great content!
Hi Jo. Hard to tell to be honest. Any reason you wanna use blackthorn? In 95% cases we use elder wood. Cut it in the winter time when wood is "sleeping", leave it dry at least 4-8 months before drilling. To get D tuning, hmm, what D, low D or high. Start with approx 55cm long wood, 3cm in diameter and 16mm boring. Then tune it by cutting of end until you get D tone. After all, you need to use linseed oil to oil entire koncovka. If you have more questions you can find me on insta (johngelle777)
@@johngelle2590 thanks for getting back John. The Blackthorn just because i have about 20 dried staves for walking sticks which was last years little venture. These have been dried for 2years and the wood is unbelievably beautiful when sanded and oiled. Im hoping to make a Low D and High D. Playing flute has helped me through some difficult times as of late and i simply cant afford to buy. Im thankful for my shed and tools haha! Unfortunatly i dont have fb or insta im afraid but thankyou for the invite.
@@josephdowell1027 To drill through blackthorn branch can be challenging. Elder wood has soft centre which helps to hold a drill bit in place while drilling. That is why. :) I am working on walking stick where top part is 6 hole whistle. Maybe you can try it too. Hmm? :) All the best buddy.
I found out, that koncovka was traditional flute also in Hungary - called tilinkó and in Romania - called tilinka

Lenght of koncovka should be about inner diameter of the tube multiplied by 45 - but it is not critical. The ratio at fujara is from 1:50 to 1:55
@@misacraft3714 thank you so much for this!
