- This video will show you how to replace the Body Control Module in a 2003-2006 (possibly other years)Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Silverado, Sierra, Escalade including how to relearn the security feature so that your vehicle will start with the replacement BCM installed. This truck has the 5.3 vortec v8 engine
Just to clear up some confusion this will not work for anyone who buys a new BCM from Amazon or elsewhere like I did. The process in this video only works on a BCM that is already programmed to the specifications of your vehicle. Hence the importance of the matched part numbers. If you buy a new BCM the part number will not match and it will not have any programming whatsoever. This will require you to bring your vehicle to the dealer for programming or to someone with the proper equipment and knowledge to do so. I purchased a new BCM and plan to discuss options with the local GM dealer about the BCM programming. Either I drive my vehicle down there with the bad BCM installed, hand them the new one and have them install and program it, or install the new BCM myself and have my vehicle towed to them for programming. I have a hunch I won't save much money either way.

Hey dave I've got a really dumb question for you I really hope you are able to answer! I've got an 03 Escalade esv and I started having a/c and other issues and thought it was the bcm that was the culprit! Sooo, I bought a bcm from a diner escalade and found the relearn secret hand shake to get it to start and work properly! Heres where the issue starts. So, the truck does everything it's supposed to but has the same problems as before, so it wasnt my original bcm that was the problem! All was good except that the truck through a permanent code for the airbag! I know once alot of vehicles hit 100k they automatically drip a code for the air bags so you will take it to the dealer to get a check up done on your system. My original bcm didnt throw this code. For safety sake, (months later) today I finally got around to changing my original bcm back into the escalade. I went to go do the secret hand shake process (4x 10 min, cycle key, bla bla bla) well to my surprise the truck actually started right away with no hesitation! It didnt do the turn over start and shut right off routine! Everything worked as it should except the little lockout idiot light on the dash was solid lit up would go out, and wouldnt flash so I could do the re-learn process! I went to clear my check engine light and see what/if my code scanner had to say. The scanner wouldnt even pick up that it was connected to the truck? The a/c & heat worker recently accept it cut in and out a bit? But the windows auto door locks, door remote fob everything works? Any thoughts on getting the dash lock light to flash so I can get the bcm to relearn the truck again. Again I've now got the original bcm the truck originally had in it. I'm guessing it restarted right away because the bcm originally came in the truck but if that's the case I cant figure for the life of me how to all the way get the original bcm all the remated again and have no airbag dash light so it's safe for the family to cruise in again.. thanks, hopefully you see this soon and are able to give helpful input because I'm sitting in the drivers seat now with the hood up... 30 jan 2020 4pm

I ordered a BCM off flagship one for $200 gave them my vin and they flashed it , then this relearn worked for my 2003 tahoe with no other messages. So thanks man

Easy peasy! Dash came apart without a fight. Connections were easily removed. Old BCM came out quickly and after putting it in backwards, the new BCM went in the slot. Connections were quick. Going through the off/on cycles to program the new BCM took time, but went exactly as instructed. Truck started and idle came back down within a few minutes. No issues. On mine, the seat belt alarm went off continuously and the head lights only worked when manually turned on. This corrected both issues. Rebuild BCM at O'Reileys was just over $300. thanks for the uninstall portion of the video. I took my BCM out yesterday and the pins on the black tab had corrosion most likely caused by the leaking windshield (windshield now replaced). I cleaned the BCM board and all connectors, added dialectic grease the the plugs and no more dead battery this morning

Was your dead battery the only symptom?....I troubleshot my draining battery to the BCM, but have no other issues caused by it.... like those other folks above. I dont want to get a new one only to get into more headaches like airbag lights etc if maybe I can just take it out, clean it, look for any bad solder joints, and put in some dielectric grease like you did.
@@stevehellwich463 Yes, my only issue was the parasitic draw causing the battery to go dead. Once I cleaned up the corrosion and applied the dialectic grease, I was good to go. Well worth the effort to get in there and get it done.

I had the right rear door ajar always on and my brights wouldn't work and my fog lights wouldn't turn on. I followed this to the tee on my 2003 Chevy avalanche and now my brights work again....the fog lights work again....and no more door ajar so now my inside lights won't always stay on thinking the door is open. Thank you for posting this was awesome. FYI I do have the factory Radio it now has a permanent red light on all the time but it doesn't work now so that part is true. I'm putting a Double Din in soon so I'm not worried about that.

I'm a little concerned that the factory stereo might not work after changing the BCM. I have a 2003 Yukon. Today it has started saying the rear hatch is open when it is closed. The interior lights are staying on so I pushed the override so they wouldn't drain the battery.
I'm not sure on that one. That is something I read on a Tahoe forum but since I was dealing with a aftermarket stereo I didn't have to worry about it. You may be able to get that info from a dealership or mechanic weather or not it will need reprogrammed

Yeah I had a coworker tell me he paid like $180 to get his programmed. I told him he could have saved a lot of money by hitting the subscribe button and watching my videos. I am glad you were able to get it fixed.

I have a 2003 Escalade ESV, I had the "rear access open" issue. After lots of playing with the rear latches & sensors I bought a used BCM from a Tahoe (same part#) and did this relearn procedure and it worked like a charm, started after the 3rd 10min cycle. Rear access issue is now gone, but now I have airbag and stability lights on -_- the struggle continues!

Great vid. I also ordered an eBay bcm and had my Vin programmed. However upon completing that relearn process I now have a “service airbag” displayed on my cluster. Error code B1001. Now I have to either go to the dealer or find a mechanic that can utilize a scan tool to make the airbag module (SDM) communicate with the new BCM. The headache continues.
Did you ever find out the air bag issue? I did the same and mine has the damn airbag light on 😭
Thanks. I read somewhere that you need to clear the engine codes because the ECL will be triggered after swapping things out. Not sure of this though.
Okay so how would I clear the codes when the truck won’t turn on because my bcm isn’t programmed to it and the code reader can’t connect?

If the bcm is going out would it stop you from reading the service engine code? Or the code reader from powering up/ acknowledging the vehicle?
A blown fuse for ur cigarette lighter can cause it not to power up a code reader. Have no idea why but it worked on 05 Silverado
Hello. I have a 2004 suburban. And I keep getting these issues, no crank/half crank it will eventually start, ABS and Parking brake light, TPMS, Service 4wd,and Service Brake System. Are these issues that can be cause by the BCM? Just trying to get some answers.
I've replaced the ignition switch, checked the pcm for corrosion on the connectors, brand new starter, checked fuses, checked ABS and engine grounds.

Did you replace ur bcm to fix these issues? Did it work? Im having similiar w my 04 avalanche although it starts everytime...but serv messages park brake and i have 0 as odometer but truck had 190k+ avg and instant mpg not working either, speedo does
So I replaced the bcm and the truck fired up and runs fine without the relearning sequence. I still have no power to locks, windows, ac, or dash cluster.
What are the symptoms of bad Bcm?
How about pick n pull for a used one? Or a non dealer source? 2001 chevy Silverado. Amp test immediately identified BCM circuit. Pull that fuse and no more draw. Now for the fix…
I have a 2001 GMC Sierra. Replaced my BCM with same part # . Procedure worked. I now have a security warning lamp every time door is opened and air bag warning lamp is on but no dtc scanned. What have others done to resolve this?

My 03 Silverado single cab drains my battery... it keeps passing power to my power windows even after turning off the truck and taking the key out... do you think the bcm would be the problem??? I have to disconnect the negative cable if not itll drain the power out
I am not sure what would fix that. It may be easier to pull the window fuse rather than the battery cable, but that still doesn't fix the problem. Best of luck to you though

where did you bough the replacement , was preprogramm it or new or from a junk yard? need to know I have problems whit mine is a 2003 silverado
maricarmen flores I purchased mine used from eBay. Would be the same as getting it from the junk yard. It needs to have the same part number as your original BCM and should work after the relearn process. It is my understanding that it will need to be reprogrammed by dealer for the factory stereo to work. I have an aftermarket stereo installed and did not need to reprogram. Hope this answers your question
I’m trying to program my BCM, it’s not working. I’ve tried several times and by looking at your video I see that my security light stays on and does not flash. Do you think that is the problem?

I had brought my 03 silverado in to get a transmission done, lost 3 and 4, new ones in now and the thing shifts better in 1 and 2 but still won't grab gear 3 and 4 and my tail lights act very wonky only 1 lights up at night, any ideas? Gonna try to clear codes see if it shifts fine, new shift cable as well

than wait 10 minutes

Greg Moore I didn't even think to see if it fixed my heated seats. But it did get rid of the door ajar and alarm going off randomly

I Replace my BCM, on my Chevrolet Colorado 2006, put the key at ON 10 minute but the Security Light never turn off, ANY Recomendation?
My 03 Silverado 4.3 will be driving then start dinging which causes the Brake and ABS lights to come on and flash

Great video and very informative..! I have a 2007 ext Cadillac..any chance that you can tell me why my backup/reverse lights stay on? I replaced the brake switch on the brake pedal...someone said the relay to the backup/reverse lights burned out in the ON position but I cant find the rela ... someone else said that the relay to the backup/reverse lights is in that little BCM black box that your working on?
I have heard of people having to replace the fuse box to fix that problem. Was also told it could be the park neutral safety switch. The bcm also has something to do with the reverse light. For a temporary workaround you may be able to pull the fuse if nothing else is on that fuse

Hey, I have an issue in my 04 1500 Suburban; when Im driving and pass for a irregular ways ( Cause I live i Mexico) the locks use to unlock, sometimes the ABS sign on the panel lights on, sometimes the engine turns off! Could be a problem of the BCM?

I have a 03 yukon denali and my battery keep dieing, some say its the cluster not shutting down while parked at night also my radio is pulling power(fuse) too also amp(fuse) my question is can a bad BCM cause these units not to shut down when they suppose to my battery is dead like the next day but when charge everything works like they should.
There are many things that could cause your battery to drain. Also the battery could be bad. I believe the radio and a few other things draw some current for a few minutes after turning off the car(not positive on this). With mine the bcm caused the battery to die because the vehicle would randomly think the door was not shut and the dome lights would come on. Plus if it was locked that would cause the alarm to go off. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer but good luck with it. I do know that I have had electrical problems with all four of my vehicles that had the vortec engine.

My battery was dying I used an infrared camera in the middle of winter to see what circuit was draining it. Came back to a 3way USB charger I had plugged into the lighter socket. I ruined 4 AGM batteries because of that bad accessory.

SO did you loose your original/accurate Odometer reading with the install of the used BCM? I watched another video of a Saturn and the used BCM had a reading of 200k miles while the original BCM had a reading of 140k.
Nope. Odometer reading still accurate. I am pretty sure the odometer on these is stored in the dash. I know if you replace the dash on these you have to get the odometer reprogrammed

Hello Dave. We have a slightly different scenario with our new BCM in our 2005 Tahoe. I have installed a pre-programmed replacement but our engine started right up on the first turn of the starter...not a bad thing by itself, but it did create the need to pull the fuel pump relay to keep the engine from starting. Even with the fuel pump off, and following the steps you discussed in this video, I can't get the security key lamp to blink and then turn off after any amount of time. I elected to just let it sit for more than 15 minuets to see if the light would turn off, but it did not. So we are left with a new BCM that apparently I can't learn in to the car. Any ideas what else I can do to get it to learn it in? Is there a way to trick the computer into thinking that I have initiated the passcode learn procedure that I can try?

I tried to replace BCM in my 2006 Suburban with a used BCM numbers matched. When I try to do this procedure my security light stays solid. It never flashes so I was unable to get this to work. I did go through the motions and turned they on and off 4 times waiting 10 minutes in between but I ended up putting my original BCM back in. My mechanic says he has a guy that will reprogram it for $250 but I'm thinking to buy a scanner that is capable of reprogramming. Any feedback on this?

I replaced my bcm in my sierra 06 and did the procedure. It starts but my radio is still picking up interference and my air bag light is on all the time
I do not think that either of your problems are related to the BCM. The airbag light may be a fuse or possibly the front impact airbag sensor. The radio interference is strange. Could position be a bad ground.
Any idea if this will work for a 2000 Silverado?
Ceasar Luna it should be the same procedure. I am not sure if it is located in the same spot. Make sure the replacement bcm has the same part number

Cool so you saying that was a programs on the bcm I can buy one at junk yard and do exactly you did easy I have a 2001 Tahoe and after market radio my problem are speed monitor light stay off and my parking lights,license lights and third brake light don’t work should I be ok with your steps lmk ty
It is a relearn process between the key/ignition and the bcm. This may take care of your issues it also may not. Could also be shorts in the wires, badd connection, blown fuse, etc. I am not sure if the speedometer light is connected. These vehicles tend to develop many issues in the dash cluster. I have had many of these with different dash issues. Hope you get your truck fixed. Sorry I couldn't be more help

Not sure if process is the same for that model. You could try checking out on of the trailblazer forums and see if anyone can help you out. Most of the people on those forums will happily answer your questions if they can

What would cause your oil pressure to be slammed on Max like that? Cluster or the sensor?
I am not sure on that. I do know that cluster, along with all of that style I have owned (4 total) had cluster problems. GM really blew it on those clusters.
My personal experience tells me it's the sensor, easy I guess, disconnect the sensor to see if anything changes. If it's the cluster nothing will happen when you disconnect the sensor.

I don't think a regular obd2 tool will scan airbag codes. I would check all the connections. I think a few are under the seat if you have side airbags.
I am pretty sure all you have to do is find a scanner that can read and clear codes for SRS and once you clear the codes you should be fine.
You need a GM Tech2 scan tool to remarry the airbag module to the new BCM

I asked a dealer friend and they said some part numbers were changed years back but are the same as OEM. When I replaced my BCM the security light came on but didn’t stay on. Do you know why that could be?

Oh no I installed it myself using this video and then tried to program it myself using this video but it didn’t work so I had to get it towed.

What stopped working to warrant a NEW BCM?
On this one the doors would randomly say the were ajar. This would make the alarm turn on (usually the middle of the night). Replacing the bcm fixed the issue

@@danieleastland3798 it was an electrical problem with the wiring. A couple of wires were touching underneath the dash under the steering wheel.

They are all different and sound the same. I once replaced my MAF sensor, when I needed to replace my MAP sensor🤦🏽♂️

TCM: Transmission Control Module
ICM: Ignition Control Module
BCM: Body Control Module
@@daveaffolter9697 ok... That's good to know.. Where are the VCM's and the ECM's located on this vehicle? I know where the PCM and BCM are on my truck. I have a 2003 Escalade EXT... I think the chassis are pretty much the same but whenever I look up parts and put ECM in the search engines I get a slew of PCM's....Same when I just looked up VCM after I heard you mention it.

It should as long as the numbers match up. This was basically a junk yard bcm. I got it of ebay used and was not programmed to my car. All I did was the steps in the video.

Hello. I replaced a key cylinder and drove my 2003 Silverado for a week and it would not start after that. Turns on just like yours but won’t start up. How do I program the new key?
I am not sure the cause. You could try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 30 minutes then reconnecting. It is strange that the truck started and ran fine for a week
Dave Affolter. Also, there’s no rear connector on the back of the BCM. Do some not have that plug?

will this work on a 2002 suburban 1500. The bcm parts dealer says I need a techline terminal and scan tool.
It also says it will be necessary to perform the Learn Procedure for the passlock system. Is this neceassary?
I am not sure on that. I do know that going with a used one that the part number matches up many people have had success doing it this way without the tech 2 tool.
Is it the same for the ECM??
I do not know the process for the ECM.
