Thanks for the support! The Pilot is another good option in this segment, though fuel economy would not be the best in segment. For durability and fuel economy, the Highlander is great for if you don’t need a third row!
It should be pointed out that the regular Highlander scored higher on the IIHS tests. It was also a 2024 top safety pick, while the Grand Highlander was not.
I have a 17 Highlander Platinum now and I have never been satisfied with it. I’ve watched several videos on many of the new mid size SUV’s and think the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max or the Lexus TX 500h is the replacement for my HL. Great video! I don’t think you can go wrong with either vehicle! Just depends on if you need the more space. I think the better comparison would’ve been the Highlander Hybrid against the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max.
Funny. A lot of people complain they don’t want the 2.4 turbo because of potential turbo problems. The same people would jump at the chance to get the hybrid max, which also has a turbo.

There is no wrong answer. I think it really comes down to whether or not you want a primarily two row vehicle that you can occasionally use as a three row in an emergency or will frequently use the third row and need maximum space.

This review came at a perfect time cuz we went to see these 2 yesterday in person. The GH feels so much larger than our current 2017 highlander and the standard one. I will say the GH does feel less premium by a small margin than some of its main rivals though.
I really like the gen of Highlander you have but for some reason I can't seem to like the new gen Highlander (disliked it since day 1) BUT if you're looking to upgrade the Grand Highlander is a phenomenal choice if you ask me
The good thing about the Grand Highlander introduction is that it seems it has taken pressure off regular-Highlander demand. If your 2017 Highlander meets your needs already, it may be worth to get a good deal on a new Highlander versus getting the new Grand Highlander. With that said, assuming MSRP, and you don't mind the extra size, I think the Grand Highlander should be the default. The base $48,000 XLE AWD GH is a nice amount of car for the money.
@darkivaz-aaa1145 That's why I love it. It offends other soccer mom suvs. The Highlander is very soccer mom-ish in design. I need something that has a macho and bawsy appearance!
Hold up, you can get full LED lights on an X trim Camry but even on a platinum Highlander the blinkers are incandescent on both sides and the reverse lights are incandescent? What kind of BS is that?
Biggest thing is that one can get the top trim with the best MPG with the Highlander, only. The Grand Highlander requires the higher end motor for the top trim levels which gets much worse MPG than the Highlander.
It's Sunday and we just got home from looing at them side by side. The one thing that I like much better on the GH is it not having that odd looking bulge down the side. I didn't like it the first time I seen it, and it's no better now. It reminds me of cars from the 1950s. We have a Land Cruiser and were thinking of buying a new Toyota but was unsure of the model. We both like the GH and also the Sequoia.
Don't forget if you want to tow something, the ecvt is really not ideal if you wish for a long life. The standard "old school" auto is much better suited. And the GrHi can tow a lot more weight (small travel trailer vs tent trailer).
Great review as always, guys! Thank you! Love these comparisons! You are spot on about some of the cheapness you derived. My wife and I went to check out a Grand Highlander in the platinum version and were very disappointed in how cheap it felt. It was not a hybrid version, so that might have made a difference. But we walked away without even taking a test ride.
I have a question for you. I’m in the market for an SUV can’t decide between the Cadillac XT6 and the Highlander or the grand Highlander what do you recommend?
I still prefer the Highlander I don’t need the extra 4 inches in the back. Before I used to but I like that it is shorter to maneuver and better since I really rarely need the third row now. 2 kids gone so 4 people are fine
Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX Platinum is the SUV that I will buy when I am ready to start a family. Yes is pricey but I plan on keeping for my LIFE time :)
tried the Toyota 360camera - panoramic surround view - on a CROWN / grand Highlander- it was awesome.. BEST system that PAINTS the road along the Undercarriage as you drive fwd so u can see exact tire placement over rocks / terrain. It also turns on automatic as you slow down below a certain speed. I wish other companies would copy everything about it. Suspension was cushy, loved the max hybrid power and platinum trim. Everything else was bleh. Would never get a non-platinum model.
Actually the Hyundai palisade has the 360 that works the same way and you don't even need to get a limited model just have to have the sel premium. Unfortunately mine was totaled which is leading me to the Highlander next due to it being a hybrid but will get a limited as the xle you cannot get 360 camera

Love your compros! I would love to hear a compro between driving dynamics & performance between the GHL with lower output Hybrid vs the Max. Is the lower output model competent enough for getting around on freeways with 4-6 passengers or is it a real slug?
Thank you! We got a brief drive in the regular Hybrid last year and it is a lot slower than the Hybrid Max. We included a clip in our previous Grand Highlander review, but it also sounds strained as well. It will get the job done though and get you excellent fuel economy
Great comparisons as always guys! I noticed the same thing as you guys did on the visual quality/feel of the GHL vs the HL when I saw one in person. It just looked cheap to me compared to the HL. And I had my concerns on how far up in hierarchy Toyota would position it vs the HL since we're already talking 50K plus. So it appears it's the Hybrid Max drivetrain and the additional space that you're paying for but not much else as 'Grand' here does not mean the same as what is does in the Wagoneer. That being said, the Telluride/Palisade still offer the best perceived quality and features at the same HL price point, and I would pick the loaded CX-90 Turbo S easily over the GHL.
I test drove the v6 2022 XLE a few times. Very jumpy and far from smooth. But it does have torque enough to move. I have a 5.7L sequoia so I didn’t get the HL. Lol.

The Highlander became irrelevant when the GH came out. It is effectively a 2 row SUV due to the pathetic 3rd row space. Needs to be way cheaper to compete with the new Santa Fe which has more space, luxury and features.
I have a feeling Toyota will discontinue the regular highlander. The Crown Signia will replace it as the semi SUV, those who needs 7 seats will go eithe Sienna or GH.
I can't; they sell over 150k of them a year. I can see them dropping the 3rd row from the Highlander and moving the 2nd row back for class leading cargo space and leg room in the 2nd row.

@@panzer_TZ I'm sure their 2017 Highlander will last many more years but if they REALLY want an upgrade I would HIGHLY recommend the Grand Highlander
Can you tell me if the seats are exactly the same between the two models? Also, does it feels more spacious when you drive the Gr. Highlander?
I would love to see the Highlander vs. the new Defender Sport, I mean Santa Fe! 😊
Yep. The santa fe stands out more than the highlander
@darkivaz-aaa1145 That's why I love it. It offends other soccer mom suvs. The Highlander is very soccer mom-ish in design. I need something that has a macho and bawsy appearance!
You're right. In person, the Santa fe gets people break their neck mlre than the highlander. I see what Hyundai means by being controversial
Hold up, you can get full LED lights on an X trim Camry but even on a platinum Highlander the blinkers are incandescent on both sides and the reverse lights are incandescent? What kind of BS is that?
I love my Grand Highlander it’s beautiful and spacious
How does it compare to grand cherokee L?
Excellent comparison as always!😸
Is the regular Highlander still needed?
Don't forget if you want to tow something, the ecvt is really not ideal if you wish for a long life. The standard "old school" auto is much better suited. And the GrHi can tow a lot more weight (small travel trailer vs tent trailer).
Great review as always, guys! Thank you! Love these comparisons! You are spot on about some of the cheapness you derived. My wife and I went to check out a Grand Highlander in the platinum version and were very disappointed in how cheap it felt. It was not a hybrid version, so that might have made a difference. But we walked away without even taking a test ride.
Thank you, friend!
Love your video
Thank you!
Are spear parts available on your website for grand highlander?
I have a question for you. I’m in the market for an SUV can’t decide between the Cadillac XT6 and the Highlander or the grand Highlander what do you recommend?
I still prefer the Highlander I don’t need the extra 4 inches in the back. Before I used to but I like that it is shorter to maneuver and better since I really rarely need the third row now. 2 kids gone so 4 people are fine
GH XLE or Highlander Limited?
@@wills2315palisade let's you see through BETWEEN the wheels? I don't think Hyundai has that.
@@Vamanos46 many new models have 360 cameras that can see underneath the car. Palisade even have camera screen on the front dashboard showing you the incoming traffic when you turn the turning signal. For cameras Toyota is actually the company that’s behind others not just Hyundai.
Both are great vehicles. We chose the Highlander.
both them are impressive car nothing to lose.
on the stereo you should use the same song in both cars in other to appreciate the difference.
I bought Hl toyota, after 4 years only there are a problem in transmission they refuse to replace due to mileage, very bad experience so sad ,
How about the first row are they different from each other? Great video
Thanks! In space? Not in any meaningful way.
@@CarConfections Thanks , Cause the space is very critical to me . I’m a tall man .
I just traded my Highlander in for the grand and yes it’s worth it to me! I’m I. Heaven
How do you compare grand highlander with lexus tx 500h. Is that worth the upgrade?
Most I’ve read is that it’s not worth the upgrade - but I think it preference.
Here's a comparison we made a couple months ago (ruclips.net/video/tB6O8VDldsc/видео.htmlsi=0_A2c0p8uwZ3M2EE) thanks for watching!
I got my GH limited Vehicle last week. I like the vehicle. Two issues are it doesn’t have Driver easy speak and second while on Bluetooth call the other end caller cannot hear passenger side person voice. This model comes with microphone on driver and passenger side. But not working, anybody has this issue? Dealer saying microphone on driver side only picks sound, what kind of nonsense. Then what is the point of microphone at passenger side. Any input from any GH owners?
Try another dealer, don’t buy that garbage
I would pick the grand highlander
I would rather have the sleeker regular Highlander with the higher reliability
Even though the GH has more HP and space, I still prefer the other. Too bad they can't offer the engine upgrade in both.
Need a Hybrid Max with 2nd row Bench seat
Is the sitting position height similar to your Santa Fe ?
Yes
so what is the Sequoia for then??
Sequoia has different engine and is on Tundra platform
towing
Having driven German engines w mid 300hp and all electric vehicles with a lot to torque… only reason I’d get a Toyota now a days is for the reliability and ONLY for the hybrid max engine… anything less feels underpowered… here is to waiting 1-2 years…
Price is nuts for a inflated crossover. You could almost buy 2 mini vans for that.
No you can’t. Go price out a sienna and try
2 minivans for a price of $60k? I thought Dodge stop making those garbage caravan.
Rating the GH at 8 & the Highlander at 2 just wrong.. The Highlander is a great vehicle especially in the Platinum trim! Apparently these reviewers only do reviews for a narrow audience…
It doesn't mean it's still not a great vehicle but just that the Grand Highlander makes more sense for most people
@@CarConfections
Yes you are presenting to a limited audience, only those that carry 8 people everywhere all the time… some people don’t have the room for a large vehicle and I like the GH..your car reviews are very good, and I respect your both built your business …although can’t subscribe as your from Kentucky.. a state that supports a criminal named trump who promotes racism & hate just like Kentucky’s senator Mitch McConnell…
I found GH to be less agile between the 2
They didn’t need a grand Highlander if they had made the Highlander the size of a Telluride or Explorer.
The Highlander has been out for awhile; it was around before there was even a Telluride or the current version of the Explorer (which is RWD based).
If you use the third row often, it is definitely worth the upgrade
Oh for sure, regular Highlander has a dysfunctional 3rd row
Love your compros!
I would love to hear a compro between driving dynamics & performance between the GHL with lower output Hybrid vs the Max. Is the lower output model competent enough for getting around on freeways with 4-6 passengers or is it a real slug?
Thank you! We got a brief drive in the regular Hybrid last year and it is a lot slower than the Hybrid Max. We included a clip in our previous Grand Highlander review, but it also sounds strained as well. It will get the job done though and get you excellent fuel economy
Highlander, fits in garage.
Is your long term grand highlander review out yet? Couldn’t find it. The ones clips were taken from for this comparison
It's not quite finished yet but it will be posted very soon 👍
Have both can't compare to GH
Neither I will go for the Lexus, tx
Get the MDX and call it a day
@@darkivaz-aaa1145the MDX is fantastic but it’s not gonna have as much space as the TX
TX is more expensive but it’s also more luxurious, I think it’s worth the extra given that the buyer is willing to spend it but to each their own
@@darkivaz-aaa1145 mdx is disastrous.. No space inside and ancient technology
@@CarGeek360 yes, I know it's the most luxurious model
Regular Highlander hybrid
I paid 42525 for my GH
No thanks, I will keep my 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE AWD with the V6!
Was someone offering one to you?
That V6 was tiresome on long
Road-trips
I test drove the v6 2022 XLE a few times. Very jumpy and far from smooth.
But it does have torque enough to move.
I have a 5.7L sequoia so I didn’t get the HL. Lol.
@@Zilla12haha good one.
It s an upgrade only if you need more space
I disagree, the Grand Highlander is an upgrade in pretty much every way IMO
@@CarGeek360interior on Grand Highlander is cheaper. Hood and doors feel Ike and sound like tin
@@Ryan2022 the interior on the Grand Highlander looks better and I highly doubt it feels cheaper, no one claims that the hood and doors feel like tin EXCEPT for you
@@CarGeek360 false.
@@Ryan2022 at least the Grand Highlander looks good on the outside, can’t say the same about the regular Highlander
Toyota Highlander (gas) = in stock ('cuz no one wants it)
Toyota Highlander (hybrid) = 2 year wait-list mainly for the 35mpg
Toyota GRAND highlander = Lexus prices for a stretched-out Rav4
It’s odd in the US the GH and Lexus TX prices actually overlap. But in Canada the TX can be 5-20K more expensive. Ie hybrid max vs tx500h: there is a 20k delta in price
I'm about to say the hybrid isn't no dam 2 year wait lol
@@robmalcolm8042
"No matter which of the 5 trims you choose, you may be surprised to learn that there is a very large waiting period for the Highlander Hybrid. Unfortunately, getting a Highlander Hybrid remains difficult due to persistently high demand and low supply. Unless production suddenly improves, dealers estimate a wait time of more than 2 years."

@@zenon3021you are in Canada that’s why. I see plenty of GH here in the US and for sure in the SF Bay Area. Seems like Canada are getting so little allocation on Toyota and Lexus. I heard someone waited 2-3 years on all an Lexus PHEV SUV.
Prefer the turbo gas.. much Faster than the Hybrid…
Ha mercados que o highlander e aceite porque o maior so nos grandes paises como os usa ou russia.....dizerem que o highlander e mau e melhor comprarem um dacia
Basically, get the GH if you give a F about your third row passengers lol
No, GH feels bigger in front and middle. Plus added luggage/ junk space is really useful
They are so noisy
First
The Highlander became irrelevant when the GH came out.
Neither. Both are problematic with their quality and control
Keep clowning yourself😂😂 naveen part 2

I can see Toyota dropping the Highlander soon.
Nah….
The HL offers a more affordable choice since it has a base trim whereas the GH only comes in XLE and higher
I can't; they sell over 150k of them a year. I can see them dropping the 3rd row from the Highlander and moving the 2nd row back for class leading cargo space and leg room in the 2nd row.
Great review, but I noticed the pricing on the Highlander you reviewed was not for the hybrid version. When you actually compare the Highlander xle hybrid to a GH xle hybrid the prices are much, much closer. I think for a more true comparison you should have reviewed the Highlander platinum hybrid to the GH platinum hybrid non max version. Good review otherwise. Keep up the great work.
@@robskinner1972 not to mention that the regular hybrid version of both models are in extremely high demand even now.
