Via SonyAlphaRumors, Sony leaks the groundbreaking 24-70mm f2.0 lens! It's a full stop faster than the standard 24-70 f/2.8 lens, which will allow professional photographers to gather twice the light in low-light conditions and make more bokeh/background separation when the composition calls for it. It has the potential to pull professional wedding and event photographers from Canon and Nikon over to the Sony e-mount camera platform.
The only similar lens that exists is the Canon 28-70 f/2, but that lens is missing the VERY important 24-28mm focal range.
Via CanonRumors, we have the Canon R5 II specs. Canon R5 Mark II rumored upgrades include improved processor for better image quality and increased burst rate to 60 frames per second... though that burst likely comes with some usability drawbacks. It also has an OLED screen, which should make a huge different in the real world.

LOL!!!!
We all know the game: Sony leapfrogs everybody, then Canon leapfrogs everybody, then Nikon leapfrogs everybody. Nobody with any sense sells all their lenses and buys a new set every time a new camera body comes out, except Chelsea Northrup.
@@marshallgoldberg8376 While it's hilarious what Chelsea does, she is in a relatively unique position to do it as part of their business, especially for Tony's hour-long camera tutorials. And some of the video series she has made while deciding are really good buying process instruction.
I am suspicious while reviewing these serious news and rumours in that nice jacket there are no pants under the table.
For sure!
Hidden by the huge laptop.
Why would you suspect he's not wearing pants? There's absolutely no good reason he'd be wearing pants
Thanks to the VID and Zoom business meetings, I didn't wear pants for over 2 years. 😂
Why do I have woman underwear on my mind now 😂
It’s end of april and can’t seem to find canon r5ii 😅😢
Currently use the R5 for wildlife photography and I love it. I'll upgrade to the R5ii if there is some significant upgrade, but I dont see anything so far that offers me that. The oled screen is a nice to have, but not sure thats enough. Lets see what the hands-on reviews bring us then.
Nikon is buying RED!!!
That's BIG news!
😳😳😳😳😳
this gives nikon access to red raw
@@MS-ju5go Nikon already have compressed raw internal (Z8 / Z9). But you are right, could be great to add the option for red codec
@@amermeleitornot only that ! Global sensor technology with up to 20 stops of dynamic range !
Tony, this is huge news in the video world: "RED will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nikon, pursuant to a Membership Interest Purchase Agreement". I'm sure you are preparing something...

I have the R5 and anything more for me is just rabid gear acquisition, the mk2 looks like a nice step forwards but where is the pre-burst/pro-capture that I've been used to on other systems for years now? that would be a decent upgrade for wildlife or sports.Or handheld high res modes?
When you do your initial flash where you have no light on your model,if you can still see her what do you adjust so you don’t see her?
thank you for the updates
Hi Tony, anything about the R5S? I love my 8 yr old 5DS-R and would love to upgrade to it's direct successor.
bigger body to prevent overheating?
I look forward to your comments regarding the removal of the traditional manual shutter on the upcoming R5 Mark II. I was under the impression that the potential distortion(roll?) caused by a electronic/digital shutter would prevent its use by any serious wildlife or action photographer. Despite their tendency to overheat, do i need to buy a first generation R5 before they are gone?
How about Sync for speed lights? Hot shoes to fire Triger for studio lights or speed light?
I’m a Fuji user with the xt5 and xh2 but just want a full frame camera to add to my kit and I shoot events and weddings and I’m a hobbyist too so can you or anybody recommend a full frame camera ? My budget is around upto 3k and maybe buy a used r5 or Nikon z7ii or Sony a7r cameras
I'm considering upgrading from the R6 MK1, I think I will be a happy camper with this jump.
I found that while luminance noise at high ISO on the Canon EOS R5 is well controlled and pleasantly filmic in appearance, color fidelity is poor compared to the Nikon Z 7II I’m using now, and for me color is more important than noise. If Canon could improve upon this, as well as make the AF joystick easier to reach, I’d be interested to an R5 Mark II.
For an R5ii to be worth it to me, I'd need more FPS, something to reduce rolling shutter (would love stacked).I'd expect two CFexpress-B slots. 8k60, 4k120 and 1080@240.Updated AF, curious about the eye tracking (like in the R3), take away the 30 min video limit, I want pre-shot whatever its called (where it buffers just before you click the shutter, and saves those.
looks like you want the sony a9iii
Tony, when can we expect a Sony A7-V? (A7-5)
I've had an R6 for 3 1/2 years and an R5 for 3. Both have a mechanical shutter that closes on shutdown. As a result, I've never gotten sensor dust. That, I will miss on the R5 II unless it comes with some kind of shield like the Z9 has. I doubt that I'll upgrade, at least not anytime soon. I'd rather get that 200-800 lens first.
It'll have a cover. There's almost no question. For example, the Nikon Z8 and Z9 have no shutters but have protective curtains.
I’m an amateur photographer who owns a Canon R5. For me, the upgrades are underwhelming and I’ll keep what I have. It may be different if you’re a professional.
I love the R5
Everyone decides what marginal gain is worth $xxx dollars for themselves. Even people that only take photos for themselves and never show them to other people at all
Nah. Same.
Work flow is important to me. Once I learn a camera something extraordinary will have to happen for me to switch. The R5 was that camera for me. Sold my 7D II.
It would cost me about $2,500 to sell my R5 and upgrade to an R5 Mark II, and I don’t see $2,500 of value in these new specs. The R5 isn’t a “really old” camera and it performs fabulously.
agreed
Tony, what do you think R5 mark I would drop to in price?
The R5 already floats around the $3000 mark currently
Even shooting RAW, the processor is quite important not only in how fast it scans the image but also read write speeds. Can you do a video on the impact of the processor on a cameras performance?
2:18: But we got the 50 1.2, the 85 1.2, sigma gave us their 14 and 15 1.4s and 35 1.2, the 135 1.8 got IS, and canon has their rumored 70-150 f/1.2.
I don't think we never got it, it's more that there was a focus on primes, improving zoom ranges (see the 100-300 f/2.8), and backfilling lineups.
The R5 Mk II could really use the AF Smart Controller found on the 1Dx III and R3. You give us all the autofocus points, now give us the ability to scroll between them quickly.
I’ve been waiting to see what the final specs are for the R5ii and the R1. Of course the “leaked specs” change almost daily. Wondering what will be the final build, and whether the R1 really will be the “master of everything”?
The EF mount Sigma 24-35 f2 was too short of a zoom range for its large size.
Surprised sigma never revisited any f2 zooms since
Thank you so much for resuming rumors for us
No precapture?
I’ll wait for the r5c ii
Hello guys I'd like to ask you your opinion. Canon r5 or Sony 7r5 . Thanks for your opinion! Reliability of autofocus most important
R5 if you shoot wildlife.
How A1 is comparable to R5?
When a person calls a 4 year old camera really old, it makes me think if I can call that person an expert in photography...surely an expert in tech products
Good point. I like the channel because of the technical stories, not for the photography skills. It´s about equipment here, not about creativity.
I was waiting up on the R5 m2 for sometime, as I wanted my old R5 to be the video camera, but I finally decided to go for R6m2 for video. And with the rumors, I think I made the right decision.
I'm disappointed with Canon and regret my decision to sell my Z9 and keep the R3, believing -- at the time -- the R1 would be a year or two away. At this rate. there's be a Z9ii by the time Canon gets around to delivering on their mythical R1 flagship, and we can only hope it lives up to being a jack of all trades camera, because 30MP won't cut it. I've got one foot out the door and about 3months of patience remaining.
What is the best point and shoot with the highest optical zoom?
Nikon P1000
@@drbeardo6960That's a bridge camera, not a point-and-shoot.
If the Canon R5 mk2 has the most advance EVF like the R3, a little bit more dinamic range... and a usefull electronic shutter option.. im in!
I have a question. By the way I’m great at picking forums to talk about things not related to the subject. I am a 52 yr old aspiring wildlife photographer. I am in the Canon eco system with an R8 and R7. I would like get really serious about it. My budget for a new lens is up to 3500 dollars. I would off set the cost by selling some less expensive lenses as a trade off. I can get professional level used gear for that amount when looking at EF glass. But anything I add I know you are already familiar with. So many lenses, was hoping for your thoughts from your professional perspective. Thank you
Hello Tony, it’s been a long time. I’ve gone from a KS2 to k70 to k1 -ll, down from i’m an Minolta camera 35 mm from 1960s. I used that all through the teens and got a lot of pictures from it now I had bought small digital cameras for a while. I use them canon and Nikon and whatever and then I decided I want another camera so that’s when I bought the Camera Pentax.
Shame this was uploaded before you had the chance to see the news about Nikon and Red
I wish they would improve video features and quickmenu for R5 mk2.. Sony has really good quickmenu that you can customize like you want.
Last week it had a 61mp sensor! The most significant improvements need to be ones that make it a better camera. Significantly better autofocus, stacked sensor, maybe more megapixels only this is not necessarily beneficial due to file size. I have the 5DsR, using a Sigma 150-600 with a 1.4x the images are fantastic, even BIF. The existing R5 is not what I hoped for, but it is 4yr old tech. [I have had mine 3yrs and are only 75% happy] Fingers crossed. Mind you if the R7ii has a sensible readout speed it would make it a better camera, but having a lower market price usually means a drop in quality somewhere.
So on paper, how does Canon R5 II stack up against Sony A7R V?
Canon is much faster.. good for wildlife and fast moving action.
In case anyone is interested Leica SL3 is available for preorder.
I'm looking forward to the R5II as my first mirrorless camera for sports... just wish it wasn't so expensive. How about a camera without the Video features that I never use. Remember when cameras were just cameras??
Breaking news was filmed yesterday that’s why no Nikon / red news 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks😀
I love my R5 so much that, as a keen amateur, the R5 M2 better be able to at least fix me lunch! ;0)
I have been waiting and waiting for the R5 mk ii and/or the R1 for months. I finally gave up and bought the R3. At this point and with the given specs, I don't know if I'll buy either now. The R5 mk ii doesn't seem to be a huge upgrade from the R5. I may end up buying the R5 mk ii only because my R5 has been used a lot.
I did the same, I caved and bought the R3 on sale for $4499. I still may buy the R1 but if its barely better than the R3 then we got a similar camera for about $2000 less. The fact that I just bought it 2 weeks ago now makes it certain the R1 will come out within the next month. murphys law
Two thoughts:
1) The R5 won't have C2 RAW, or at least, this sounds highly improbable to me
2) If removing the shutter means a sync speed with the flash of at least 1/240s this means that the R3 will become obsolete for most things, R3 II and maybe R1 Global should have to be on the way to compensate for that if they don't wanna kill their lineup.
Knowing Canon, it's very weird that they would do this two things
I'd be interested if it doesn't overheat :)
I love when Tony breaks news!
Tony, where is the Breaking News about Nikon's purchase of RED? Greetings from Mariano Lopez from Buenos Aires, Argentina 😜👍
I'm pretty happy with the 24 f1.4
I rely on setting the mechanical shutter to close when my camera is shut off to protect the sensor while I change lenses. Removing it is a bad idea.
Well if it's like the Z8 and Z9, they include a sensor cover that is exactly like a shutter but somehow doesn't do shutter stuff.
I'm mainly excited for this in the hope it will drive the price of the R5 down :p
Still here waiting on Canon's 80-200mm f/2 to pair it with the 28-70mm f/2.
No, Nikon Z8 has 1/200 flash sync speed!??
Faced with this never-ending charade surrounding the release of the Canon R1 and R5II, we're left to wonder whether certain 'photographers' haven't exchanged their artistic soul for that of a compulsive collector of gadgets, forgetting in the process that the real magic lies in the eye and not in the tool.
My only requests for R5 II are no video record limit (hopefully a given these days), and better battery life - my R5 goes through batteries twice as fast as my R6 II on a gig, if Canon can squeeze out more battery similar to the R6 II it would be a big improvement in the real world!
I also see a lot of people asking for more MP - I can see a potential R5s on the way at some point (eg 60-80mp for speciality high MP shooters), so in that case I think keeping the ‘main’ R5 II at 45mp is a good call.
i think the 45mp and the down sampling is what's eating through batteries
@@Ra-Hul-K it’s more when taking photos at events etc, I’d like to think if they were able to get better battery from R6 II at 24mp than the original R6 at 20Mp, they should be able to improve R5 II battery performance if the mp stays the same
I’ve always heard two complete opposite stories about the R5 battery life being either great or bad, which is strange. My R5 for whatever reason is great on battery life. Can be out doing both stills and video big wildlife sessions for 5+ hours and I MIGHT been to change the battery. I can also shoot a full concert for 3 hours taking up to 1500 stills on the one battery (I use Canon brand batteries)
ever since Sony A9III came out, Canon had to once again rename the R1.
This time its R5II.
So R1 will yet again be pushed back to god knows when......
Okay, so seems that finally i will move from Canon 5DSR to Canon R5 mark I if on good sale.
I bought a like new 5dsr for $1200 recently and its Amazing!
@@MattParsonNice deal ! I start on C300D, than 20D, than 5Dmark III and up at 5DSR. Still dont have reason to switch to mirrorless as most of my work for client is real estate.
Not a fan of having an OLED display on my camera.
You get "burn in" of the UI within a couple of weeks, and it gets stronger and stronger over time. On my s23 Ultra, I can see the Instagram UI and the status bar up top burned in quite heavily already, after one year. For a phone that most people replace within 1-3 years anyway, maybe not such a big deal, for a camera you want to use for 5-10 years, and sell afterwards, it is a problem.
The most exciting thing about this is I might finally be able to afford the R5 mark 1.
45mp isn't worth the upgrade. Was hoping for that 60 range
Good morning 🌅 happy people 😁✌️
Sony lens is gonna be like $3500.
and R5ii seems to just be a z8.. As someone who just bought a z8, this pleases me lol. I was nervous it'd be better.sans oled screen.
I haven't used my z8 enough yet, but doesn't it flash sync up to 1/200th? Still better to have a mechanical shutter for when it is needed tho, I agree.
Oled screen? Some added FPS. As a portrait photographer this not going to do it for me to jump. My R5 will be good for some more years lol
I'm interested in the next gen processor itself more than the R5 ii. The R5 desperately needed a faster processor with more bandwidth and the new burst specs tell us we're getting that. I'm looking forward to the upstream effects this processor will have on the R3 ii and R1 with price benefits to the retail R3.
R3 is great but still reaching. The newly concieved focus system needs more horsepower to truly reach it's full potential. After a test drive, and speed ramp in the R5, that new processor in an R1/R3 ii is going to have a spooky-fast and spooky-decisive focus.
I just bought an R5 for 2600$. There is almost no way the M2 will be "worth" 4k again unless they offer a lot more than what you've just announced.
Most hobbies don't really need these features either tbh. 4k60 is really good enough for most people when it comes to filming.
The Sony 24-70mm f2.0 is going to be a beast of a lens and I can't wait for Sigma to make their own version, so I can actually afford it.
Last count, 24 RUclips "Experts" talk about something no one knows anything about... My Z8 arrived today and I am not looking back.
More blur... no wonder Tony is excited! ;)
Still waiting for that R5s...
I all heard is “too heavy for me”😅😅😅
I totally disagree in respect to 24 to 28mm at the wide end. I find 24mm almost always unaturally wide, I kept my iPhone 12pro over the 15pro because the 15 has that 24mm main lens. So 28 is better for me, Tony just presents his personal view here... A while ago 24mm was considered "ultra wide angle".
lol!!! Cool intro!!!
It makes me feel very uncomfortable to see the R5 with exposed sensor when there's a standard setting that prevents exactly this!
I would prefer to have the sensor exposed to dust than to have the shutter exposed to damage.
@@UnconventionalReasoningif something is poking into your camera body to damage your shutter, you've got bigger problems.
@@UnconventionalReasoning what you mean exposed to damage? curtain just protects from the dirt and dust.. Canon is not a Sony that breaks its curtain easily..
@@m11kan The shutter is one of the most delicate parts of a camera. If dirt and dust gets on one blade, it can end up between blades when the shutter opens, leading to issues.
Just switch the HSS for strobes and you're done. I shoot outdoors all the time. Strobe at HSS setting works perfectly on the z9 and z7ii. No problem... just works.
HSS cuts 75% of flash power and prevents continuous shooting.
@@kylewist7745 This makes me laugh. HSS is a great tool to use, plus you can set the Z9/Z8/Z7ii/Z6ii to 250th shutter for flash without HSS. It is a manual setting that can be set permanently. This has been the case since the D1. Why does not NIkon auto-set this? No idea. Also, HSS has drawbacks but can effectively be used indoors and outdoors. I have used HSS for 20+ years. None of my clients and these are Fortune 500 clients that can care less, they love the work and use my work effectively. But hey we will all do what we need to with the gear we use.
How can you say a new processor means nothing for raw shooters?!
All data captured by the sensor gets processed. Why do you think the Z8 or A1 only shoot at 20 and 30fps, respectively, when the sensor can read out fast enough for ~250fps? Then there's AF calculations, power consumption, in-camera compositing... everything the camera does is influenced by the processor. And shooting jpeg is not among the most processor-intensive tasks; if that was all you needed a processor for, they could have stopped developing them a decade ago.
Canon rather play it sade then sorry , if they skip the mechanical shutter im pretty sure the sensors read out speed is so fast you it Will not be any wobbly straight line . 45mp is more then enough for me
2:18 No we didn't. Besides 28-70 f/2, the legendary *135 f/2* became *f/1.8* with IS and all of those affordable (slow though) super telephotos are available due to mirrorless systems (DSLRs basically could not properly focus darker than f/8 and now f/11 is no problem) and... *35 f/1.2* (it was f/1.4 max on DSLR) is on the horizon... 😎 Moreover, 10-20 f/4, 14-35, you name it... They're all new and unique (at the time of their appearance) compared to DSLR lenses...
7:33 while true about contrast, OLED is not significantly brighter, in fact its the other way round, LCD screens are brighter than OLED as they dont have burn in issues unlike OLED. Also the peak brightness of OLED screens decreases over time while it holds it on LCDs with no issue. Not so sure about OLED screens in cameras is a good choice on the long run. Hopefully they thought it thru and tested it long term.
Well you're distinguishing between pixel brightness and total brightness, but I can see my iphones OLED screen outside when I can't see any cameras LCD. I don't care how they do it, I just need to see the screen when it's sunny.
Hopefully THE END of micro HDMI
Here's hoping this new Sony lens is parfocal🤞🏻It won't be cheap.
waiting for a canon mirrorless with a boost in flash sync speed.
Keep waiting. They would need new camera with global shutter
@@Chris-ey7zy I know 😭
Having a wide mount doesn't just mean having more wide aperture lenses, it means that you have BETTER IMAGE QUALITY overall: RF 1.2s are amazing, way way better than anything else. 28-70 F2 and 24-105 F2.8 and 100-300 2.8 are ground breaking.
This is true nerding, for a Sony lenes...?
I am interested in the canon R5 II
I am interested to
no canon wont be using oled...oled is infamous for its inaccurate colours
exactly.. i don't think putting an OLED screen on a professional camera is a good idea.. OLEDs with their infamous burn in & tint discoloration would be a disaster on a professional camera since people hold on to these for at least 5-6 years, if not more.. smartphones already suffer from these issues, but people generally upgrade their phones before this becomes an issue or they break their displays and get them replaced.. although I'm not up to date on the present OLED technology, but searching "green tint OLED smartphone" would show lots of complaints from all kinds of smartphone brands
Nikon PR: We just bought RED (and no it’s not April 1st).
Sony PR: Quick, check with R&D to see what upcoming products we can tease!

18-55mm F2 (stabilazed) [Full Frame] is the dream lens, somebody should make it. This should be the new "24-70 f2.8" with the new large mount, and today's tech, should be possible. I would buy it even if it is large n heavy n expensive... just MAKE IT canon/sony!!!
So far, the new specs for the R5 II are pretty disappointing. If it doesn't have pro-capture, I'm not interested in buying it.
Doesn’t sound like I need to upgrade. The flippy screen is better? Well, whoop.
Well hopefully more is coming. We don't yet have all the specs... but "Well, whoop" pretty much describes my feelings about every new camera that has launched in the last few years.
As a current R5 owner, the only two things I would upgrade for are AI improved AF and Auto exposure, plus a better processor for video (with legitimate heat management)
As an R5 user, I'm not jumping up and down in excitement yet. No mechanical shutter would 100% be a deal breaker. And, really, I just want better high iso performance and less jumpy AF. Hmm....
I'll be honest, my eyes just glaze over when I hear 'spec sheet top trumps' whenever a new model is announced. As a stills photographer with no interest in video, I'm still waiting for a reason to 'upgrade' from cameras I've had since 2018/19.
I want to see someone really push things forward from a product design perspective, and making the camera a different user experience to operate... Such as a full Android UI.
On a positive note, who cares for small update, when the real update will be cheaper R5 😊
I use the 28-70 F2 on my R5 for 99% of all the shoots I do. It’s the lens that I switched to canon for and it was well worth it. Very excited for Sony shooters to get a lens like this
I believe this will be a niche Lens, expensive and heavy..........a nice problem to have .......I use most of their 1.4 gm primes just because of their IQ with small size and low weight , not a cheap hobby
24-70 F2 bokeh remains to be seen. The Canon one has great light gathering, but actually has worst bokeh compared to Prime F2 lenses. So, don’t get your hopes up!
You're absolutely right. I'll be migrating to Sony. Global shutter made me thing(50/50). Now come the fabulous 24-70 F2.0 WOW! Bye² Canon R5 & R7. Fly me to the moon Sony
Nothing here that would cause me to move up from my R5.
