  • @eldengard23
    @eldengard23 2 месяца назад +20

    i think the buttons make quite a lot of sense. The white/letter is for when you are shooting, while blue/icon is in image review. Nikon does same thing with z8 and z9, it's just programable under playback custom controlls.
    Given the nature of r1, being able to mark a photo for prioriity FTP is very usefull. Also, if they go out of theyir way to show you how to use the buttons in picture preview, that means they've put some tought in the ergonomics, making your camera into a console for quick selection and edit of your photos. I have something simmilar setup for my z9 and it's invaluable even for corporate events, let alone sports and press

    I love Canon R5's 45M high quality images. But for astrophotography, the images are too noisy. As R5II has a stacked sensor, it implies BSI structure and will be one stop better in high iso performance. That does make a difference.

    As primarily a wildlife photographer, I am not excited about the Canon R5 II. I don't need more frames/sec or even a faster read-out speed in electronic shutter 99%of the time--but more megapixels like the Sony A7R5's 60 MP, would have excited me so to allow more cropping for distant animals which is something I need to do all the time--even at 800mm. It's been years for this update, and it feels like technology has just stalled here. Completely disappointed and looking elsewhere.

Now, they probably don’t want testers talking about it or showing photos but, they need this tested before the Olympics, the only way it can be tested for professional sports events is at those events. Therefore, it will be seen. That’s why they announced it. 4:43

    Hi Tony, thanks for reporting on this! I'd add 1 caveat to the FPS in electronic, is that the current R5 is dropping to 12bit raws instead of 14bits. Curious to see if the R5 II will do the same. But as an R5 user for landscape and general event/corporate and occasionnal wildlife, and as you stress really nicely, the R5 II doesn't make much sense so far. The R5 is still a great camera I can rely on, and produce images anyone should be happy with - and the improvement in the R5 II is clearly targetted to broaden an already amazing range of use.

    The blue icons for FTP and cropping on the R1seem like they might be quick toggles for sports photographers. Both look positioned to be able to be pressed with the index finger. Maybe they're there so photographers on the sideline can invoke them with a tap? The fact that they're blue suggests they're alternate functions, not primary. Maybe the buttons have the white icon's function during shooting, but the blue icon's functions during playback/review? Or there's a "shift key" on the back you can press with your thumb to access the blue icon's function?

    Love my R5, but I find myself grabbing my R6 II so much more often for one simple reason - the battery lasts at least 2x as long! It wouldn’t be the most exciting upgrade but if the R5 ii can do all the cool new stuff and improve the battery life I’d be excited to upgrade!
    Other features I’d love to see from the R6 ii - I love the on/off switch on the right, making for almost complete one handed use, and the photo/video switch where the old on/off button used to be makes for way quicker switching compared to the R5!

I’ve never had a rolling shutter issue shooting wildlife with the R5, but admittedly that’s larger African wildlife, and larger slower birds than hummingbirds. What would really interest me though is a well implemented pre-burst, as that’s gold for wildlife. I’m still (probably in vain) hoping for the fabled “big” R5 firmware update introducing pre-burst for the R5 once the R5II dust has settled, but 95% sure that won’t happen. Most likely I’ll just wait for the R5II to get 2-3 years old and grab a 2nd hand one, as the R5 will do nicely till then.

    Technically concerning image quality and the process of taking pictures, everything is fine and doesn’t need an upgrade - coming from the R5 MK I and being a people, fashion / advertising photographer. Lenses I can adapt from EF and more sharpness for me is rather unwanted, as it gets way too hyperrealistic. What I would love to see is more and easier connectivity. Like when shooting to be able to drop JPG and even RAWs via WiFi like to a broadcast channel to multiple connected phones / pads / pcs. E.g. just by pushing a button, you select the last pics you shot and send them over. As easy as AirDrop but of course via an App. Nice for working with / for instagrammers or even on smaller commercial jobs.
    Concerning Video there would be one point - a bit more options for the codec / Bitrate settings. But that’s it. Greetz from Germany and keep up the good work!

    Doesn't matter how each manufacturer chooses to present them (as flagship or not), the direct competitot of the R5II is the A1 in the Sony lineup. And the competitor for the R1 is the A9III - both high(er) fps, both low(er) resolution, both higher than "normal" flash sync speed, both aimed mainly at proffessional (sports) photographers.
    But even if you don't agree with the above and choose to go by the manufacturers' designation, that A1 is a flagship and R5II isn't... is it really a surprise that a very high end camera matches a flagship that will be 4 years (minus 2-3 months maybe) old by the time the R5II goes on sale?

If it does help, then I could see that silent shooting being a real help for event photography as well. 4000$ seems pretty good deal, I'd be surprised if they can manage that low! Perhaps Sony's going to have to think about making a stacked sensor camera for under 4500$ in the future to compete with Nikon and Canon, (and not the a9ii)!

    Imo the only interesting thing about r1 is whether sensor will be fast enough do not get any flickering/banding issues or not. Because if it will have banding issues, a93 will be a much better option for anyone shooting sports

    The lack of software evolution by camera manufacturers is there Achilles heel. Companies like DJI, Apple, Google and even the shamed Insta360 I’ll be beginning to use software to make their cameras and workflow very powerful and I believe this will overcome much of the hardware technology advantage these companies have.

    I never use the electronic shutter no matter what I am shooting (Canon R6 Mk ii). When my camera can shoot 14 bit RAW why would I settle for only 12 bit?

    • @Carthodon
      @Carthodon 2 месяца назад

      Because you often don't need 14 bit raws and do want a totally silent camera.

    • @kshgarg147
      @kshgarg147 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Carthodon I agree with the silent part. Try this, click any picture with a lot of really dark areas both in 12 bit and 14 bit. Now increase the shadows and you will see the difference in the noise levels. The whole reason we pay so much money for these cameras is higher bit depth. The reason Hasselblads or Phase ones or FujiFilms are better than our cameras is because they shoot in 16 bit (well actually 15bit with 1 extra bit for something else!). The day I saw the difference in noise, I decided never to use 12 bit again (unless I need to shoot silent which happens very very rarely)

      @@kshgarg147 So I almost always use mechanical shutter because in the back of my mind I think if I'm going to take a picture then I want maximum quality unless I need the eshutter. Its a psychological thing, not a practical requirement. I can admit that, and you should too.
      I only realized this when I looked at a friend's work who was using an OM camera, which only does 12 bit files, and I really couldn't tell that it wasn't 14 bit. If in order to tell you need to put it side by side then there really isn't much of a difference, and in so far as there is a difference it isn't really a big deal.
      I have this hypothesis that the reason why you have in commercial shoots a demand for medium format 16 bit 100 mp shots has less to do with the person commissioning the work being able to tell the difference and believing it is required and more to do with someone being afraid of screwing up the project and having to explain that to their boss, so they are willing to pay the extra money "just in case" the other attributes are needed. Most of the time they really aren't.

      @Carthodon 2 месяца назад

      @@kshgarg147 Weird, my response isn't showing up. I legit have no idea why.
      The summation is I rarely use eshutter because in the back of my mind I think if I'm going to take a photo then I should max out the iq. It's not an actual practical requirement, just a psychological fomo.
      I came to this conclusion after seeing the results of OM cameras, with only 12 bit raws, and how I really couldn't see much of a difference. If you have to put them side by side then the difference isn't really that significant or important.
      I have this hypothesis that the reason why in high end commercial shoots there is a demand for expensive medium format 16 bit 100mp photos has less to do with any practical need, they may have no idea what 100mp or 16 bit really means, and more to do with the guy running things not being sure what he needs so he just errs on the end of maxing everything out because in the scheme of things its less expensive than to have to redo a shoot and have to explain to your boss why. Most of the time I don't think really any of it is actually necessary.

    Many pros tend to specialize in one particular area/genre of photography and for them, things like high FPS rates might not be important if they are a landscape, portrait or wedding photographer. Similarly, if they are a sports photographer, they may be willing to have a lower pixel count to achieve a higher FPS. Many enthusiasts OTOH, might shoot a variety of subject/genres, so while we might not need a "Flagship" such as the A1, Z9 or R3/R1, we want a great camera such as the A9III/A7RV, Z8 or the R5 (R5II). I shoot landscapes, wildlife, birds (in flight), astro, sports, aviation and a little (very little) portrait. True, if I am shooting a landscape, or the Milky Way, a high FPS is meaningless, and a high MP count is of more use. If, however, I am at an airshow, or the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, or a car race, lightning fast AF speeds and FPS are extremely important.
    IMHO, in some ways, the amateur enthusiast will demand/ask for higher specs overall because they (we) don't specialize in a single area than a pro who only shoots one type of image would. As you said, the R5 (R5II) is not a Flagship and is aimed at the enthusiast. We want a high end, camera with great specs "across the board" to allow for our diverse subjects and interests.

    Thank you for the video. While the R5 II has nice features with a proposed stacked sensor I’m still happy I bought two A1, one new, one used almost 3 and half years ago. Will see what really comes out from Canon, the rumor mill is never ending. That’s why there is no Sony A1 mark II. Sony wont announce its replacement until the Canon cameras stop changing daily. While I agree CFExpress B is nicer I’ve had zero issues with my dual CFExpress A cards since I started using them. Have a total of 5 pairs to support my two A1’s and my A7RV. My sole Canon R5 only gets a little bit of love but will see if that’s worth upgrading. Take care.

    Agree just about everything until the end about: the only people who care about sensor readout speed are sports and wildlife photographers. For portrait & event photography, the fast electronic sensor readout speed also provide the ability to shoot with blackout free silent electronic shutter under artificial lighting conditions with flash sync at 1/200s (1/250s in APS-C) and/or higher (Hi-Speed Sync still works in electronic shutter) with ability to turn on the Anti-Flicker or Variable Anti-Flicker function to get flicker and bending free images. This is one of the important reason why I ditched both the A7IV & A7RV for an used A1.

    R5mk2 I want a built-in grip and the big battery since the flagship R1 is only geared at sports shooters. I can live with 45mp, but a bump to say 60mp would be nice, in case you have to crop more. Had they put 45mp in the R1 I would be in line to get one like the Z9 has. Will have to make do with the R5mk2. Can always hope there will be R2 and that would be close to the R1 with 45MP or bigger sensor. I 'm hoping since they stopped the old grip there will be a build-in, but I expect price point will win out and we will be stuck with 2 batteries instead of the 1 big full-power monster. Don't have the R3, so not sure about eye tracking. Think better AF is more important and the other is kind of gimmick. If it worked great then maybe not.

    1. I have owned a Sony A7RV since its release and, even if something supposedly better, like the Canon R5II, hits the market, I'll still be happy with my camera. Camera manufacturers take turns outdoing each other and there's never an end in sight. Unless one has a lot of money, one doesn't need to get the latest, biggest, fastest, etc, when its released. 😉
    2. At one point, I was intrigued as to why Sony uses CFExpress Type A cards instead of Type B. The manager at my nearest photo store told me that Type A's make it easier to fit 2 slots in a camera body than the Type B's. I am not a pro and I don't video. My 2 SD V60 cards are great for what I do. 😉
