    Hi from NYC, Duade!
    Been a Canon shooter since 1970 (Canon FT-QL, still have it!). Your list of wants is excellent, but I'd like to add three more to it.
    1. Add the ability to program the M-Fn button to cycle through the Custom Shooting modes to ALL Canon cameras, as you detailed last year in your video tutorial on the subject. I have an R5 and couldn't be happier since I've set that up, but my wife has an R6ii and cannot take advantage of that. Bummer!
    2. Add an integral Arca Swiss mount to all future lenses with tripod collars, and make all collars removable.
    3. I read somewhere that Canon has discontinued production of the battery grip for the R5/R6 cameras. I hope this doesn't mean my current grip will be incompatible with the R5ii if I decide to upgrade. And I really hope this doesn't mean they won't have a grip at all for the series going forward. I've been using battery grips/ winders since my first Canon AE-1 back in the 70's!
    Thanks for all that you do for us, and please keep up the good work!

    Also:

    *focus preset recall button customisable to an on-camera button

    Happy with all your points, a couple of additions I'd love would be to allow the focus bracketing to function when using speedlites, it's currently disabled in Canon when using off-camera lighting (Speedlites) Nikon and Olympus both allow focus bracketing with speedlites, only Canon hasn't been able to calculate the Speedlite recycle time. Be nice to have the same megapixel as the R7, it when you use crop mode you are no where near when the R7 gives, so that would be handy no game breaker just be nice, an extra programmable button on the body would be nice.

  • @Hodenkat
    @Hodenkat 5 месяцев назад +16

    I would love so many of these features in the R7, but at the same time I don't want to see the price jump by 30%. I agree that faster memory cards would be a boost to performance, but if possible I think Canon should still provide some support for SD cards. Maybe have dual interface slot(s) that can use either type of card? I think some of the autofocus issue fixes would be great, but is subject tracking "there yet"? Bird photography is the most demanding on the focus system. There are so often times when other distractions are in the shot it means the camera needs to have a "brain" that can sort it all out! Back to the R7. Great example of many features that are not very useable! - Thanks Duade!

    • @ThroughJoesLens
      @ThroughJoesLens 5 месяцев назад +3

      I agree for the R7m2. Moving to one CFExpress and one SD like in the current R5 would be the best compromise for supporting higher frame rates and still providing for a more wallet friendly card for the camera price point. For the R5m2 Canon should go ahead and move to dual CFExpress cards. A lot of users buying the mark 2 would be moving up from the original R5 and already have at least a couple of CFExpress cards and over the price shock of those cards. Also, the prices have come down quite a bit for the type B cards. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hey Duade, nice to see comparing sony and canon in terms of functionality. I would like to see on canon to adjust the settings for video, it is so anoying to go in the menu and 3 points down, to set 120fps. Sony makes this so easy, but like you I hope for a stacked sensor. Also to be able to set more functions on the custom buttons, they are so limited compared with sony.

    It's really good that you use and try out different camera systems. The main brands all have their strengths and weaknesses.
    Adding to your list are the following suggestions:
    - A more serious commitment to firmware updates. Even with its limitations, the R3 should have been updated to include raw pre-capture present in R6 Mark II.
    - Better super telephoto prime lens with a built-in TC, lighter and slightly smaller, preferably with an Arca-Swiss compatible lens foot.

    That's a good list. #3 is a probably the most difficult, the others seem trivial in comparison. Image processing is hard with a tiny camera chip. I sometimes wonder how it works as well as it does having some slight idea how complex a problem it is. The near/far focus option on some systems is a nice compromise...like directing a border collie. That first bird image was terrific. The images you show are great and the joy you have doing it is infectious, if I wasn't so lazy ;-)

    Offer the R5ii body in TWO models:
    (1) Without the Low-Pass Filter for higher image quality.

    I agree with almost all the points you make and hope Canon is listening! The only thing I have reservations about is the zebra over exposure feature, with Olympus and Panasonic m 4/3 cameras the exposure reading is taken from the jpeg. and often leads to under exposed images, with Canon's histogram there's a similar problem. So I'd like exposure information based on the raw file capability and for the readings to be more accurate. As another viewer said weather sealing on an R7 ii would be welcome.

    Thanks for this great summary Duade! I just would change the ranking and set the hardware based features on top, like stacked sensor and processing power for readout, buffer etc.. Thats crucial, the rest could mainly be solved by software. But thats only a wishlist and Canon so far has paid little attention to wishes of their customers or what their competition already offers, preferring to integrate more marketing-effective features that nobody needs and overheats cameras. They are also reluctant to release firmware updates in order to hold back enough material for new models. Let's see what happens this time.

Hopefully, Canon will make an R5 Mark II that matches your wishlist.

  • @andreas_rr
    @andreas_rr 5 месяцев назад +1

    I think getting a "speed boost" button should be doable for canon, as there are two button functions to recall/set a given ISO, SS, etc, and those should be able to set the framerate mode (H+, H, etc.) too. One temporarily overrides the settings as long as the button is pressed, the other resets the settings permanently to the selected default values. (i can look those up if anyone's interested, but i don't have the names in my mind)
    The way i did it is yet another easy way, having set the silent mode to a button. I typically use MS (12 fps) and by toggling silent mode, i can switch between this and ES (40 fps on the R6m2), thus having effectively a speedboost button and being able to switch between the benefits of MS/ES at any point.

    I think the body is the least of our worry but tbf stacked sensor with much better readout speed is big improvement also have pre bursts in individual files, then smaller thing is optional battery grip and built in GPS, now the problem is how limited Canon super telephoto lens lineup is, Sony and Nikon made an in-body zoom mechanism but I'm stuck with a extending barrel 100-500mm that is 40% more expensive than both with darker aperture and terrible collar... And I'm still stuck behind the line of 8 200-800mm backorders at my local shop as they only get A SINGLE one after 4 months...

    Hi Duade. I have an R6 MKII and just finally received the 200-800 so haven't fooled with the lens yet. I traded an R5 for the R6 MKII. However, and I don't mean to insult your way superior shooting skills than me, in menu selection Auto Focus 2, I think, do you have your mode set to case 2? And below the case 2 selection main screen there are sliders. Set them to the left, extra sticky. That always worked for me when I had an R5 working with the RF 100-500. I had very little trouble with other objects in the way as long as I aimed the focus point close or on the subject as I had set with the thumb on the screen thing. Oh, I should add, I only shoot pictures, no video.

    I've got an R5 and and R7. Yes x100 on state-of-the-art precapture, larger buffers, and FPS slowdown as buffer nears full. Got a taste of precapture on my R7, but waiting for the buffer to clear to take subsequent shots is madding, as is pulling the desired pics out of the bundled file canon creates. Wound up getting an OM1-Mii mostly for that feature. V2 of R5 and R7 must also a stacked sensor to address rolling shutter issues (not horrible on the R5, but I see it on backgrounds in BIF shots). Also a big jump in the ability of AF to find birds/animals in cluttered backgrounds. Even with all those features I probably won't buy until 2026 when my Canon CarePak runs out on the R5 and R7. I'm guessing the R5ii will be over 4K and the R7 over 2K if Canon adds the features I want. Gotta space out these purchase 🙂

    Duade, good video. I would prioritize them differently but we all have our unique needs (translate, no company can please everyone with a given product.). My order would be: 1) improved AF Detection (or at least "cross type" AF sensors where it can focus on horizontal as well as vertical lines). 2) stacked (or faster) sensors to reduce rolling shutter, 3) Dual CF Express B cards (assuming that is a bottleneck. I like SD because they are so universal with card readers and picking one up on the road but if that is the bottleneck then yes, with CFe Cards). 4) Improved Buffer (I usually don't hit the buffer. I tend to shoot in shorter bursts and rarely just hold the shutter down for 2 seconds or more. I grew up shooting film with rolls of 36 and 2fps motor drives). The remaining 4 would be any order someone wants. The way the pre-capture works really doesn't bother me much. Having them all in one container file really helps me when going through my images. I can just pull out the couple I want and delete the original file and move on with my workflow vs wading through another 80 files. Seems silly but I find it easier when all the pre-capture sequence are in one container file. Everyone probably has different opinions. With your number 5 "Speed boost and adjustable fps, I would substitute programmable button that would enable pre-capture while being held down.
    I agree with nearly everything on your list (R7 shooter here) but would just rearrange the order a bit.

Is it a cost thing? I truly believe that trying to keep the price of the camera the same as the R5 is not realistic for so many reasons. I agree about GPS, I only have it on the 5D4, recently I bought a sat nav, that records location evert 10 mins so I can look at the time stamp and see where I was. otherwise I have to remember to take something on my phone or the 5D4. I thing the AF is perhaps the most important, using the 200-800 on the R5 in the UK can be stressful, too much hunting, probably due to low contrast

    For me, my wishlist on an R7ii;
    Pre-shoot
    Larger/Faster buffer
    More AF points
    BSI or stacked sensor (i prefer the later. But to maintain a similar price point without compromising the rest of the camera, I'd setttle for BSI)
    A compatible battery grip
    Better video codecs
    I'm fine with everything else in my R7, even the dual SD cards. Sure, CFExpress would be so much faster but that comes at a cost that I believe pros on the R5/mkii are more able to justify the added cost. I use dual V90s and have rarely needed to wait long for the buffer to clear.

    nice video, love your wishlist. can't help i am an Olympus user and sometimes i use nikon. but following the market i think canon bird shooters need like 200-500 mm f5.6 form Nikon. or just 500 mm f5.6. that zoom lens was so incredible in sharpness, yes heavy for me, but seriously great lens.
    glad you got the 300 f4 for the OM1 its much more fun to use. hope the rumored 50-250 mm f4 come soon and its made to accept the TC's.
    thanks so much. love that cisticola shot so much.

    Stacked sensors sounds nice. But can Canon offer such a capability within reasonable prices?
    I understand the wish for better pre-burst and bigger buffers, personally I don't need it. A better implementation (without a humongous file being written at the end) would be nice.
    A better AF which doesn't get as easily confused by branches sounds wonderful (got caught by this in my R7 *ouch* - I think that my old dSLRs were more consistent on this)
    I don't agree on dual CF Express cards (I use exclusively SD cards, which are fast enough and cheap, and an SD card reader is incorporated into my laptop - great help). Maybe a combination of CF Express and SD cards is OK.
    GPS eats battery, by the way - already my LP-E6NH barely lasts for 450 or so photos, adding the energy requirements for GPS would be a real drain.
    Personally, I would like a little bigger size for the grip - my pinky on the R7 is almost on the air, without even wearing mittens. Maybe a new battery system, based on twin 18650 cells would solve also the small energy capacity of the current LP-E6NH form factor (it's a shame that the R7 doesn't offer a grip/battery holder)

    I am a bit disappointed with the autofocus performance. I used to shoot with R7 and now I got a R6mk2. Both are good in different ways, but I notice that both struggle to find birds... I believe the software isn't trained on the birds I usually find here in southeast Brazil or it really struggles in ISO greater or equal to 1600, because it cannot focus for nothing! Bright sun, shade, clean background, busy background, nothing works! I searched a lot for some settings recommendation videos, but no settings I change make much difference. I use back button focusing using the small square more than the AI autofocus set to animals mode. Tried resetting the camera, same thing. It might be the lens, I used to use RF 100-400. I got the RF 200-800 to test that now

      Thanks for sharing your experience and yes in low light, busy environments the eye AF really does struggle and I agree perhaps they have not trained the AI enough in those habitats to find and stick to the birds. I believe they have to train the AI on as many different birds/animals as possible so I wonder If Canon have not done enough in your part of the world. I too use Spot AF quite a bit in tricky scenarios. Good luck with the 200-800. Cheers, Duade

    Since I'm not a canon shooter or wildlife :) Yet, I'll give my thoughts anyway :)
    Points 1,2 and 7 - Pre-Capture and Buffer (and CF Express cards)
    Expectations need to be set and not expect a $/£1500 to perform like a $/£6000 however, for any camera that is pushed for wildlife a large internal buffer can offset the need for CF-Express cards on budget models (R7MKII) but dual CF Express card slots should be there on the expensive bodies.
    But I'd like to see all manufacturers implement a M.2 2230 card slot(hopefully user accessible) to allow transfer rates of 5000 MB/S at a much lower cost, a 1TB NVME M.2 2230 is around $/£100 or give us 1TB of internal storage, then a single card slot for backup.
    If you're dropping $/£2000+ on a camera adding £/$100 to the Bill of materials is nothing (considering you'd not be required to purchase an expensive CF-Express B card)
    Point 6 - Zebras in stills, Highlight clipping warnings have been on my cameras for years, didn't realise that canon didn't have this? or you specifically wanting Zebras?
    Point 4 - High MP Stacked sensor, fine for the Flagship models, but the R7 MKII but is too much to expect, I think Fuji got the right balance here, 1 stacked sensor, 1 high MP none stacked to give customers the choice in 1 "Flag ship" range
    Point 3 - Improved AF will just happen across the board and firmware updates can add a lot too (if the manufacturers want to support existing customers and not make them buy a new model)
    Point 5 - Speed boost and adjustable FPS , Speed Boost seems doable but requires processing power I think people will follow Sonys lead here and it will happen eventually. Adjustable FPSI can't see why this can not be implemented in firmware..
    Point 6 - In built GPS, this is going to happen and probably will become more important to prove the photo is real and not AI

    Regarding no2, a user setting would be better, keep the frame rate or tone it down for the buffer. Not sure why built in gps was removed, that should be standard. Why force us to sync our phones to record this, especially when the phone could be a bit away from the camera (not sure on the accuracy of the gps recorded). I would add a histogram during video recording, no need for it to disappear. Lastly, add a 1.3x crop mode, not just 1.6x. Cheers

    To be realistic the R7 is limited simply due to the price, enhancing all the features would put it beyond the cost of those the camera is aimed at and also the technology will improve in the future to benefit all models at a lower cost ... hopefully! The R5 again is now quite old compared to other models we have to wait for improvements but also we have to counter balance the cost of doing so.

But Proper RAW pre Burst should have been standard Fare by now. Not so sure about having the most expensive Dual Cards. Certainly not on all their camera. Also, allowing at least the Sigma 500mm 5.6 as a option for Canon users would be nice.

    Sorry if I'm peeing in the pool: I can understand a want for pre-capture, but I also do see that I as a photographer should accept to fail a shot (or a hundred) if I'm not smart, quick or not evaluating the situation properly. Yes, I will swear over missed shots, but c'est la vie, and I will have to be more aware and better prepared the next time. I still insist on shooting with an old mirror-slapper and I'm fully able to fail a lot more shots than I'm able to get good (or at least decent ones). It triggers me to become better.
    Buffers: I did manage to fill the buffer a few times on my first 50D, and maybe, just maybe, once or twice on the 7D, but never ever on the 1Dx Mark III. Fast memory to deal with huge buffers are extremely expensive and then you need to have a card beyond that that is also able to cope with all the data that flows its way. I understand that it needs to be a trade-off of some sorts especially on the lower end bodies. We would all love the bottomless pit of a buffer that never fills up and slows down the camera to a grinding halt but sometimes we need to consider if we can afford it or if we should accept to trade the buffer depth for something else.
    Someday all that we long for today, will be standard and we will have to long for something else.

      Thanks for the comment, it is an interesting topic, I think the same applied from Film to digital with many film shooters saying DSLR require no skill and are ruining photography.
      For me I think there is space for mirrorless, DSLR and film. Ultimately it is up to us as photographers to choose the system we enjoy using the most. If you get more reward from using old gear than happy days. If you enjoy getting creative with precapture than so be it.
      We are just lucky to have the choice I think, thanks again for the comment. Cheers, Duade
