Beautiful. The beginning of the melody was used by Radio Nederland (Netherlands) international in the 1960s and 1970s as it's "Interval Signal", which allowed shortwave listeners worldwide to find it in crowded shortwave bands.
This composition is very similar to a popular Dutch song called ‘Merck toch hoe sterck’ (1626) from Valerius. The melody is said to be from Italian origin. The text refers to the siege of Bergen op Zoom by Spanish troops in 1622.
Glad you liked it, Chad. My copy came from a book called Dowland's Half Dozen, published by Ricordi; it should be available in many places as it's simply the Dowland original, although arranged for guitar.
Very nice arrangement and playing! I haven't seen a printed version with all these nice ornamentations. Can't find Kilvington either though he should be published with Ricordi.
Hi Nestor and thanks for listening. This was a very popular tune all over Europe at the time and there are many versions of it. On my music this one is attributed to John Dowland but you might well have seen another version written by Thomas Campion. Hope this helps.
I guess you're referring to Stairway to Heaven. It hadn't occurred to me, but pieces like What if a Day were incredibly popular back in Elizabethan times and have entered the Western musical conscienceness as a sort of default setting. I'll listen to it in a whole new light from now on!
thanks!

Cheers, Jim. This tune was also really popular in Europe back in the 1560s and 1570s!

Hi, Louis, and thanks for commenting. This was a very popular tune and appeared in different guises all over Europe back in Renaissance times.

Good luck, Maya, it's well worth the effort.
Great song, and very good played, but that song is a song by John Dowland or by Thomas Campion?

Very nice🌹
Thank you, Danial.
this man has the sauce
I have indeed!
Is that a Washburn guitar?
Hi Lorem, no, it's a Michael Gee composite top. I don't own it any more - it was a lovely instrument in a big space but not intimate enough for me.
Stairway! I hear Stairway!!!! Get a lawyer...

+Phil McKelliget Someone on my Zeppelin list pointed me this way LOL I too love Dowland BTW - used to sing in a madrigal group myself :D
They're both in A- with similar arpeggios. Zeppelin had a history of plagiarism, too. t
