- An Air Force reserve HC-130J Hercules attached to to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron flys aerial weather missions for the Hurricane Hunters into hurricane Florence, Sep. 12, 2018 out of the Savanah Air National Guard base, Georgia. The U.S. Air Force Reserve 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, or Hurricane Hunters, is conducting a storm tasking mission into Hurricane Florence, currently a category 4 storm. The taskings provide weather data for the National Hurricane Center to assist in providing up-to-date and accurate information for storm forecasts.
The officers aboard know exactly what they are doing. It isn't anything they haven't done 100 times before. But the idea of flying into a major hurricane still sounds absolutely exhilarating.
When the 130 base closed some crew members joined the weather bird sauadsquadron
If flying in daylight is risky, during the night must be scary.
I think that when a pilot underestimated the power of hurricanes and how things can change in seconds ,he will have a big surprise one day.
Flying into hurricanes is literally their job. I'm sure they know what they are doing as well as the risks.
i think ac 130 can stop that hurricane
what are the cannisters they drop out of the plane
They are called “dropsondes”. These collect wind, pressure, and rainfall data that are so important to assess the storm’s intensity.
Dat cool
