THULE AB, GREENLAND | C-130J LANDING

  • Cargo run to Thule AB, Greenland. During the winter the bay is frozen and resupply ships are unable to get in. That's where the Herk comes in! Trips like these are what I love doing as a pilot.
The airplane is a USAF Lockheed C-130J-30 Hercules.
    About the flight suits:
We are wearing two-piece Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) Nomex Flight Suits. Same general cut and pattern as the single-piece green flight suits. Choice of which to wear is up to the individual. I personally find having pants and taking the top off while pushing pallets in hot and humid climates during an Engine Running Onload to be more comfortable. Less of a status uniform and more of a utility uniform. But it's all personal preference and many still prefer the old PJs. Gloves are nearby (my pocket) but not required in flight.

You are following in the footsteps of many Herk crews who went before you and you are doing an excellent job. I was at Little Rock 44 years ago flying E models and had the privilege of flying to the Great White North a few times. Lots of fun getting out of the local area and seeing the world. I remember the feeling going in there of being at the end of the earth. Keep up the good work!

I worked on Thule year 1975 as electrician and repair electric on the airfield and tower . Much have changed new tower build ,and some hangars not in use . The Hercules come and go , the sound and see them land very close amazing . I was lucky and fly with a Boxtop to Alert in Canada. What a difference to see the change in modern cockpit from then . Thank you for a great video

Went there for Crested Ice in 1968....as I recall, all of our gear....toolboxes, weasels, etc was unloaded into Hangar 7. We came in on a C-124 to total darkness and -20 deg F......when we left there, the sun was up until 10pm.. Barracks were cozy refrigerators...food was second to none.

Thanks guys for the memories. I flew into Thule in 1967 on a Hercules while a trainee navigator. Something magic about the far North.

Back in high school (1975) my history teacher was a retired bird colonel. When we screwed up {fairly often} he would pull a world map down from the ceiling and use a pointer to show us where Thule was. He would then brag about when he was in the army he would send his troublemakers to Thule, then lament that he could only send us to the principals office. I see what he meant. RIP Col. Billinger, wherever you are. Thanks for the vid.

Cool video( excuse the pun). The RNZAF are due to get these birds at some stage to replace an aging older C-130 fleet. These planes never cease to amaze me with their sheer size etc.

The AF did a great thing by continuing the legacy of the Herc by investing in the J model. I've spent enough time in the back of the other models to know how much more capable the new one is. Great vid. Love seeing Thule!

I’ve got pictures of 16-5853 on the ramp and taking off on RWY 03 at CHS from 2021. Y’all had been flying over our house the prior week participating in jumps at Bragg. Went on vacation and found two Dyess C-130’s preparing for take off. At the same time an F18 took the cable on RWY 33 for an emergency landing.

Nice job guys! I spent a year in that "icebox" in the 70s. I hitched a ride with the Canadians in a 130 with a fuel bladder to Alert station on up North of Thule. Boring but beautiful at the same time...That hanger is actually where my shop was!! SO cool!. Stay safe..R.

It's been a while since I have seen Thule Air Base. The 485th EIS, which I was a member of, was tasked with installation and maintenance missions during the mid and late 70's, the time I was a member of the unit, to Thule. Getting to Thule during that time, we would travel to McGuire Air Force Base from Griffiss Air Force Base to catch a ride on a C-141. Anyway, it appears the facility has been upgraded a tad. I managed to identify one of our recreation spots during the taxi sequence in this video; Mount Dundiss. Good video. Brought back a few memories.

It’s great to see you’re adding more videos. This is one of my favourite channels, I love your content. It’s been a little while since your last videos and I was concerned that due to the conflict in Ukraine you may have been made to stop filming due to opsec needs. I really look forward to your future uploads and watching your channel grow. Stay safe, all the best.

Loved this video. If you guys have not seen it, find a copy of Strategic Air Command starring Jimmy Stewart. His character flew B-29s in WWII. After the war he became a successful baseball player for St. Louis, but was recalled to active duty during the Cold War and flew B-36s. He had an engine fire on his way into Thule. The scenery from your video reminded me of the movie. Thanks for another outstanding video.

    Hello, nice video.
    1) the landing warning sound, was that the MASTER WARNING sound of the C-130J?
I am asking because I heard the same sound in a C-5M video.
If yes, is the DING DING sound the MASTER CAUTION sound?
    2) what range does the Glideslope have at Thule?
I am wondering that you received the G/S signal far away from the airbase.
    3) do you have to use in whole Greenland the addition TRUE, when you say the runway number?
Does it depend on the latitude of the airport?
    4) are you planning to use more cameras for closer view or is that prohibited because of military content?
Thank you for answering and for the content.

The Ding Ding was just a general notification of something. Dont remember of what.
ILS is probably around 18 nm or so.
Mag or True depends on location.
Goal of the cameras is to not ever be in our way so they probably wont be much closer.

Cool video! I went there in 2016. On the way, about an hour or 2 from Thule we saw this huge crater that was at least a couple miles in diameter if not more. It definitely has been discovered, but I still am curious as to what it was since I can't find any info about it on the google.

The nose wheel steering is not connected to the rudder pedals. As the aircraft slows down and the rudder loses authority, the left seat pilot will take the aircraft and use the nose wheel steering wheel.
