    John Kerry continues to impress me. I am generally extremely critical of how America behaves abroad, but I must say he was a fantastic Secretary of State who genuinely left the world a better place after his service. He couldn't undo the mess Hillary left in Libya and Syria, but he got the Paris climate agreement, the Iran nuclear deal, a robust sanction regime against Russian aggression, managed to say 'no' to the Israelis for a change, etc... Of course, the fat orange baby is undermining all of this, but I won't forget what Kerry achieved.

It seems like such a smart thing to do, and very similar to how America’s first elections were run (runner up became VP). Senator Kerry is right, America is yearning for change along the lines of bipartisanship, and as far away from Agent Orange as possible

    • @joa8593

      I imagine foreign policy. McCain had a fair amount of common ground with moderate Democrats on certain domestic policies (Enough for a presidential term without having to touch the stuff you disagree on anyway), but he was pretty extreme on foreign policy and the President has a lot of foreign policy duties.

    • @aquamarine99911
      @aquamarine99911 6 лет назад +10

      The domestic policy divide - Republicans supporting zero taxes (and humongous deficits), no government provided or mandated health care, no social security, no environmental regulations, no abortion, no gay marriage - is pretty huge.

    • @joa8593
      @joa8593 6 лет назад +10

      @@aquamarine99911 McCain supported carbon regulation, campaign finance reform, a negative income tax for the poorest Americans, a DREAM act, and some serious healthcare reform (his plan was terrible in many ways, stupid even, but in a few ways it actually went even further than Obamacare toward fixing the system). That's plenty for 4 years. Of course the new wave of Republicans opposes all of that so maybe nothing would have gotten passed.
      There would have been a lot to disagree on (education, healthcare regulation, transportation, etc), but I think Congress could have been left to fight over those in a Kerry-McCain presidency while they focused on the issues they CAN agree on.

      +Joseph G I was speaking about a the problems of a bipartisan ticket generally. Matt Rowland - I'm on board with you. Trump in some very fundamental aspect is the antithesis to what conservatives/republicans stand for. Generally conservatives are deferential to the military; John McCain served his country honourably and suffered horrors I can't even imagine. Trump bitches about him immediately because this veteran and seasoned politician asks questions about Trump's policy and rhetoric. John Mc Cain is literally and unequivocally the diametric opposite of Trump. I didn't agree with 100% with all of what McCain advocated for but that is true of all politicians; I always trusted that the man had the best interest of his fellow citizens in mind.

    I read a lot of admiring comments about John Kerry in this section and I agree with them. Kerry's a longtime public servant: naval officer, senator, cabinet secretary. He's a remarkable example, particularly in the Trump era, of an dedicated and accomplished man, prepared to tell the world America's story.
    I'm sure there are others like him, maybe even some in public life. If so we need them now. We can definitely do better than Trump. If we can get a good meaningful opportunity to learn about them, if our election and nomination system doesn't scare them off, perhaps we could get to choose a capable candidate.

    It is great shame the United States never elected either John Kerry or John McCain to be its President - you might not have agreed with everything they did but both put working together in the interests of their nation, like finding the remains of servicemen who died in Vietnam and ensuring no one was left behind against his will, above their own interests or those of their parties.

    John McCain was not a good guy. This was such a shit soft ball interview for Colbert...lost a lot of respect for Colbert after this he should have pressed him about McCain and he didn’t

    Can you name a single name of the children that were bombed in Yemen recently? Can you name a single doctor blown up in Afghanistan when a hospital was bombed?

      The galvanization is something that worries me greatly in this country. Ideally we could be mostly moderates with the more left and right leaning folks still getting to say their piece and have the majority center deliberate on it fairly. Instead we’re reverting to tribes and not looking at each other’s views.
      To be clear I blame the republicans more than the democrats for that, and this president is only the latest example of it wedge being intentionally shoved into American politics. But whoever’s FAULT it is, the important thing is fixing it.

      Gilgamesh891 Trump is on video saying “Punch that idiot (heckler) in the face, and I’ll pay your legal bill” at a rally. Do not lie any more.

      @Gilgamesh891 I see you've adopted the GOP's newest talking point. It sucks how days after they started using it the Proud Boys attack went down. Have you got some egg on your face or what.

    Sounds to me that kerry is a savvy politico. Fishing for approval and trading on anothers death and heroism He is horning in on Mcains status by as a hero. He did .0000001 percent over there that John did. Wants the respect to rub off on him.
