Originally filmed as Smokey and The Bandit Part 3: Smokey IS the Bandit. Buford Justice would play both the sheriff AND the bandit (somehow?) ... after test audiences were confused, more filming was done, adding Cletus Snow (Jerry Reed) to the fold. You'll notice that footage with Reed doesn't feature Jackie Gleason as he had given up on the film by this point and didn't return for reshoots.
Funny thing is that Jerry Reed was supposed to be the Bandit in the first movie, but Burt Reynolds took interest so Reed became the Snowman. The sequels in my opinion are not as bad as some may think, but not as good as the first.
When I got the trailer, the paper NSS band around it said "SMOKEY IS THE", which made me excited at the possibility that it featured footage of the original scrapped version of the film, where Jackie Gleason played Smokey AND The Bandit. Sadly that wasn't the case, though there is an earlier trailer than this on RUclips, with Jackie as Justice in front of the flag, talking to the audience, where he explains the premise of that never-seen cut of the film.
This is amazing. Really wish a company like Shout Factory would get the rights to this and do a mammoth Remastered Blu-ray release that features the original Smokey IS the Bandit film, Smokey Part 3 Theatrical, Smokey Part 3 TV version, and maybe a 4th disc of BTS stuff. It'd be cool if this plus the first two and the Bandit TV series were all put on Blu-ray in a massive "Smokey and the Bandit Collection". I think it'd be more successful than they think.
Nobody knows where the footage for the initial Smokey IS the Bandit movie is or if it even exists anymore. Some say its part of Gleasons estate while producer Mort Engleburg insists not a frame was ever shot of Gleason playing both roles. Regardless, I highly doubt we will ever see it. Personally I think its long been lost or destroyed
This trailer really looks good. The movie wasn't all that good in reality but the trailer really captures the fun feeling and excitement the 1st film had, even using the theme music. Seems if they'd promoted it more with this trailer more people would have gone and seen the film
It was misleading using both Burt's laugh repeatedly even though he's not in the movie except for a quick cameo at the end plus Eastbound & Down wasn't part of the soundtrack
Thanks for posting this * the little scene of the angry cyclists running out of the tunnel is from the original ‘Smokey IS the Bandit’ version of the movie * I think the few seconds of the guy getting thrown against the popcorn machine is also from the original version of the movie, theres a scene where the Bandit (being played by J.Gleason) goes into the roadside diner and gets tough with some bikers, in the released version of the movie we only ever see the outside of the diner but in the original script for ‘Smokey IS the Bandit’ the action takes place inside - there may be some other cut footage in this trailer too I’m not sure
They should have just stopped with the original. Smokey II absolutely sucked. Then, they had the nerve to make a Smokey III without Burt Reynolds, where Snowman was now the Bandit. Lord have mercy.
You need two things for a good sequel. They are a good story and the original cast. This movie didn't have a great story. Yet most folks from the first two movies were involved. Burt Reynolds made a cameo. But that was more of the sheriff's fantasy. Sally Field was nowhere to be seen. I don't recall Carrie/Frog even getting mentioned in this movie. Besides her involvement with the Bandit, she almost married Junior twice. Some cast members got more to do than the previous movies. How much of the Smokey is the Bandit story even true? One person involved with this film said that Jerry Reed was on board from the beginning. Suppose he didn't have that mustache. This time he didn't even sing the theme song. I bought the 7 movie DVD set. As of this date, I haven't gotten past this one. I've seen the original at least 7 times. I saw the second and third twice apiece.
I was always really dubious about that "7-Movie Collection" set. Calling the film-length episodes of the short-lived ACTION PACK series THE BANDIT "movies" is a stretch, and putting them alongside the originals is a bit misleading.
This third entry had the Snowman posing as the Bandit, with Burt just in a small cameo at the end. The original scrapped version (that has never surfaced) had Jackie Gleason as Justice AND The Bandit.
This is the best sequel ever. Better than Toy Story 2, better than Die hard 2, better than the Empire Strikes Back, and better than Godfather 2. And you better believe it's going to be on my show!
Yeah, definitely. I mean, I can live with the second film since at least it still has Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, even though I don't like how they treated his character and their relationship. But this movie is a disgrace, it only has Burt in a very confusing cameo at the end. And Jerry Reed is horrible as the Bandit, worked much better as Bandit's friend and sidekick. Junior is also more annoying than ever. Only watch it for Jackie Gleason, he's still fun.
@@goldta70schick24 Run out of ideas. I mean, even the alternate version of the film sounds completely bizarre (Jackie Gleason playing both Smokey and the Bandit), so they never had an actual plausible idea for it. Though I must admit that photo of Gleason in the Bandit costume made me chuckle.
Definitely. The studio wanted a Smokey and the Bandit 3, trying to capitalize on the fame of the original and even #2. At least to a certain extent. Many of the people involved in the original did not want to do a third movie.
The Trans Ams were also modified to look much faster than they really were. The top factory 305 V8 engine maxed out at 165 HP or something weak like that. The early 80s were a bad era for any kind of performance out of muscle cars
IMO Smokey and The Bandit Part 3 is very underrated
I actually like it more than number 2
The first isn’t just the best, it’s the ONLY Smokey and the Bandit.
Should have stopped at 1
More like Smokey and the *SNOWMAN* ...
I saw this in the theater when it came out. It was really more of a spin off than a sequel. It had alot of funny moments.
It was terrible worse movie ever made

Brandon Wills Agreed!
I was disappointed when I hired this film as a kid back in the 80s as Burt wasn’t in it. Wasn’t the same without him
TV movie budget after they had to ditch the "Smokey IS the bandit" storyline
Burt was in S&TB3, but for only 5mins, in that scene, before the ending credits!

Mark Elliot
