The Scariest Moment Of Filming Smokey and the Bandit

- Опубликовано: 6 сен 2018
- Burt Reynolds recalls the most terrifying scene during the filming of Smokey and the Bandit. He remembers the scene where Sally Fields' stunt double was behind the wheel and he was in the passenger seat. They were supposed to jump over a wall, land in the Little League baseball field, go AROUND the game, and then through another wall.
However, that's not exactly what happened. Instead of going around the game, the stunt woman panicked and they ended up flying over all the kids in the field. Luckily, they all ducked and nobody was hurt. But as you can imagine it could've ended quite differently and put an end to a lot of peoples careers...

About 3 years ago,I saw Burt , at a Best Buy store in Jupiter Florida. He was so polite and nice. I remember that he was looking for a 70" LED television. I felt so bad for him. It was obvious ,that he was in a lot of pain. May God rest his soul. We have lost a wonderful actor, and a great man.
Did you say hi to him?
@@moonbeamskies3346 of course I did . I politely said good afternoon Mr. Reynolds , and he simply replied good afternoon to you. Very polite man. Actually much nicer , than I thought he was. He wasn't the guy you remember in all those movies. He was a little old man with a cane. Getting old really sucks.
@@ghall1964 I still could never accept that the frail elderly man of the last 5 years or so of his life who could barely stand up was Burt. :-(
@@jamesnoble8205 Actually if I hadn't heard his voice , and that trademark laugh,I'm not sure I would have even recognized him.
It's his heart troubles that really did him in...your strength is just zapped from it and everything else falls to pieces, little by little. And without strength in your body, the arthritis gets much worse due to immobility. A very tough ending for him. "But no one had more fun than he did" 😉
Burt is just so classy. He never says a negative thing about anyone, and seems to always be able to put himslef in others' shoes. He doesn't trash talk the stunt woman, but instead compliments her on what she did well, and admits she wasn't experienced enough. He doesn't suggest anyone overreacted, and unlike some commenters, he gets how very tragic that all could have been. A true gentleman, and a good human being. R.I.P, Burt.
Well said, couldn't agree with you more. Class act.
He's better than me. I'll say it. "stunt woman".... there is one word there that is the problem.
Today there are probably far better stunt women drivers. I guess they had to start somewhere to get to where there are now.
@@Bonzi_Buddy
Nice catch...didnt even notice that!😃
Wait...I watched this two more times, where did he say that??
At the very beginning he had nice words to offer her but basically saying "handling cars is a different thing". He was very kind in saying she wasn't woefully inadequate. I'm just saying back then stuntwomen drivers were far and few between and probably not very good because of that. Today there are much better skilled stuntwomen drivers.
It is hilarious as they had petite men doing stunts for women back in the day because they were largely incompetent.
People are just too kind to state the truth... like women cops are nearly fuckin useless too.
@@Bonzi_Buddy Its so easy to interpret words, in of all places..the comment sections...incorrectly.😅 And it seems many take things a little too personally. Thanks for taking the time to respond, I see what your saying, and agree with a lot of it. Above all, I respect your point of view & that's one thing there's never a surplus of in here!😃
And obviously, this is coming from a woman's point of view no less.
He had a soft spot for everyday folks. Always liked that about him.
Had a good chat with him once online in the early days of the internet, must've been at least 20 years ago now.
I met him and had the most delightful time with him. Will always be my most treasured time in my life :)
One Actor I always wanted to meet, he always seemed like a class act all the way
Part of that is because Burt realized one thing--moviegoers (average folks) help create the profits a movie makes--you don't have to "suck up" to them, but you damn sure better appreciate them. Having a successful picture at the box office helps the "stuffed shirts" (movie production funders/backers) be more willing to fund the next project. Burt's popularity was due to his genuine appreciation FOR those ticket buyers; the "big shots" weren't stupid--Burt's movies were properly "greased," ($$) knowing that a Burt Reynolds flick was gonna BE a money maker, thus, a good "investment." lol
Burt WAS an average folk on many levels.A home town guy until the day he passed away.
back then an apology and some sincerity went a long way.
well sincerity still does many times today. sad part is most are not sincer.....

@skittles, When Burt screams, Watch the kids!! That wasn’t scripted it was Burt yelling at the stuntwoman. 😂
I always thought it looked really real how they went through. Turns out it was real.
I just watched it the other day and I can see it wasn't supposed to be like that.
The late Jerry Reed sang it best: "They call you the bandit an outlaw untamed
Shackled only by freedom you wear no man's chain
Some say they despise you well maybe they do
But deep down inside them I bet they wish they were you
Bandit you're reckless and you live much too hard
Bandit you're the joker in the deal of the cards
You're a legend to the old man a hero to the child
Bandit steal a lady's heart with only a smile
They call you the Bandit they call you the Bandit
They call you the Bandit they call you the Bandit"
RIP Burt. Love ya!
Jerry Reed RIP, a King among men. Talented guitarist, singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, wordsmith, comedian and a wonderfully warm human soul.
Two greats from my childhood Burt and Jerry.
That was my favorite song from the movie...
He reminds me of my late father, a tough man with a soft centre, steel fist in a velvet glove. RIP to both of you.
Burt was a stuntman in his own right, so, I can imagine the sheer terror of thinking the worst on his part !!!

Burt Reynolds always seemed like a class act and he never got over Sally Fields.
Monday206am the best thing about the movie was you could tell there were real sparks flying. The characters didn’t make sense without each other.
Monday206am he got over her at some point because he married Loni Anderson. 😂
@@TheJeffro451 Just because you marry someone doesn't necessarily mean you are over a previous love. As I recall, in an interview a few years before his death, Burt admitted that he never got over Sally. I'm sure you could find the interview pretty easily, if you are so inclined.
"She was the love of my life"...his own words.
He loved her. They were both kind souls.

In my childhood I survived jumping ramps on my Sting Ray...no helmet or pads...
Me too! It was a good year eh? What would mortally injure todays kids was a get up and brush yourself off minute for us. I grew up in the desert. We rode our bikes all over the place. 5 or 6 miles in 110 heat, no problem. If you wanted to go somewhere thats what you had to do before you was old enough to own a car and get your drivers license. I had to work for my car, 1 year insurance and then i could get my license. We had alot more freedom back then but we earned it. 3 channels on tv, no video games or computers, 4 party line phone, so go outside and do something, and if you want something then get a job. Just a little different than now.
We all did

Burt Reynolds is kindness personified
Wow, had never heard this story. Hearing the sincerity from Burt as well, just wow. True gentleman. Glad no one was hurt.
Burt is full of shit here. He wasn't in the car when this happened. His stunt double was. His opposite double for Sally Field were married on set making this film.
Never saw that scene in the movie. It must have been scraped for the scene they used...
@Annunaki420 What do you mean?? Its in the movie. Frog is driving and they take a dirt road that dead ends. They jump a wall and end up in a little league game, and going through the bleachers.
70s kids were so much tougher than the ones that followed
Yeah those that survived. Like me.
Born in 68, lived through the 70's and was tuff as hell in the 80's. I think you meant to say today's kids are wimps.

Put's the whole shot of him grabbing the roof yelling "KIDS! WATCH THE KIDS!" in that scene in a new light.
Wonder if that was from THE shot?
watching the movie as an adult i did question how that really fit in with the rest of the movie...here he was being hailed as a peoples hero and nearly killing kids
I love Burt, but he’s full of shit here. First, the camera is in the left side, not the right side. Second, it was a football game, not a baseball game. Third; the jump can be seen clearly, they didn’t jump over any kids.
@@bandit7498 gotta say chief, I'm gonna have to go with the guy that was there's account of the incident, over a nobody on YT.
Coma White lol. Watch the damn movie bro. They didn’t exactly have CGI back then so they didn’t make all the baseball players football players. And they didn’t digitally remove kids from under the car. It didn’t happen. The proof is on film.
I consider Smokey and the Bandit a documentary.
As you should. About 90% of the script was improvised.
... me thinks some hush under the table money too, but what do I know.
I was there as a high school teenager watching from the sidelines. Burt Reynolds doesn't mention that the car actually crashed into a concrete dugout (destroying the car) that had a couple of my schoolmates in it. They scrambled to get out of the way. One of them ended up with a broken leg. A few days later they built a breakaway replica of the dugout and ran another Trans Am through it to continue the chase scene.

Those grandkids could be as old as possibly 18, depending on how young they were when they had kids. Granted, that would mean they each were giving birth at 18; which is pretty freaking early.

I'm from Jupiter and ran across Burt many times. My dad was friendly with him back in the 70's and early 80's and did work on Smokey II, which was filmed in the area. Pretty much everyone liked Burt. He came up from humble beginnings in Riviera Beach, FL when it was a small fishing village and he lived in a small wood A frame home just south of Silver Beach Road and worked at the gas station at the end of his street on the corner US-1. His dad was a pretty hard core cop having busted my father in law as a teenager mostly for sneaking into the drive in theater that was there in the day. Anyway I was leafing through some pics of the production of part II and saw some celebrities that went on to star in The Cannonball Run that would have started pre-production right after that one.
