DAIEI GOTHIC (2024) Radiance Films Blu-ray Review
I totally agree with you, I was not impressed with this movie at all. There are too many videos saying the movie is great, I don't understand why, it makes me think I can't trust these types of videos to tell me if I should watch a movie. Thanks for your review.
Great Blu-ray Review 🌝
Great Review! Thank you!
This was a tremendous year for us . Meaning movie/pop culture kids on the fringe. It was followed by another huge year which brought us Return of the Jedi, Superman III, Octopussy and Never Say Never Again, Mausoleum, Blue Thunder, and of course Joysticks and DC Cab. D&D Choose your own Adventure books were thriving and pop music made a big resurgence in every genre. I’m waiting for that series to be made.
I meant 2007.
This is absolutely one of the most Halloween feeling movies. I had to wait until 2009 to buy it even though it was supposed to be released in 2097. Another cult Horror film is spawned due to the lack of faith in it by the studio/distributor.
Here's the thing about The Toxic Avenger, you have to watch it the right way. You don't watch these movies like it's Goodfellas or The Godfather. You go in knowing that it's the most stupid thing ever. Only then you can see the magic. I say I'm a huge Troma fan but really I'm a huge Toxie fan. I think if you don't take any of it seriously and you go and watch The Toxic Avenger again, you will love it. It's not to be taken literally. It's almost like these movies are meant to be seen while you're high. lol Thanks for this review of Toxic Crusaders.
I still have their first 2 albums and saw them when they toured with Mojo Nixon here in Australia. They were obviously excellent, knowledgeable musicians and put on a great show.
And a friend of yours shot and directed that Toxie vs Putin short as well
Indeed! The Emmy Award-winning Alexander Monelli, director of AT THE DRIVE-IN, MARIONETTE LAND and ROAR: THE STORY OF THE SOUTHERN COLUMBIA FOOTBALL TIGERS!
We must not have seen the same film. This thing is SO boring! I'm glad you paid for it and not me. I saw it on free tv in the 70s. Never wanted to see it again. I've seen Plan 9 from Outer Space at least 7 times and have always been entertained.
I wonder if it plays better seeing it now on Blu, with strong color, not pan and scan, and without being interrupted by commercials, which could stretch out and make duller any talky stretches of the film. I found it to be a lot of fun watching it this time. Didn't care for it the first time I watched it years earlier on TV.
I actually did not mind the changes and loved this as a modern adaptation. It was both eerie and romantic - a strange blend but it really worked to up the unsettling and unnerving feeling.
Hi, can you please tell me if Cannonball Run in this collection has the theatrical audio and not the TV edited version? thanks
It's the original PG theatrical audio.
@ I can’t believe more people don’t talk about this. Who wants to hear lines like “like shot through a gun”?? So lame, lol
@@billg938 Oh, that line is in there on the disc, but I remember that being the case since I saw it on cable in 1982 or so. I haven't been able to see a film print of it since it left theaters in 1981, so can't verify that the line, while clearly looped, wasn't like that back then.
@@cinemaniacstv so your disc says “like shit through a goose” then? That’s the version I’m searching for.
@@billg938 Correct. That's the version I've seen on cable and video since 1982 or so. I'd love to see a version that isn't dubbed, but I've not seen any proof that it exists, shy of being able to see an original film print.
Nice video. I used to buy these. Still have the 1999 and 2013 editions. The guides by 2 people named Mick and Marsha are also very good. I would also recommend the psychotronic video guide.
THE PSYCHOTRONIC ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FILM and THE PSYCHOTRONIC VIDEO GUIDE were huge for me as a kid. Opened a door into a secret world of wacky cinema that I ripped off the hinges and never left.
I guess it is very nice family movie.
Great review. Can't wait to see this. Pam for the Oscar!
In my world we used to say videos. Like, let's go rent rent some videos. I never really said tapes or VHS.
I think in the video store days, it was "Rent a movie" for my friends and I, but the format was just "tape", never "VHS", unless we were differentiating between VHS and Beta.
We are going to be invaded again from what I hear another Body Snatchers is coming down the pipe.
1:50 - 2:20... Slight corrections, Mr. Nelson. Yes, that was the actor from GHOST. His last name would be pronounced AH-VEE-LEZ. He was actually Willie Lopez, Sam's murderer, who eventually did become a ghost himself. The late, great Vincent Schiavelli portrayed the angry Subway Ghost. Another great actor that actually appeared years earlier in FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. Funny enough, my earliest exposure to Rick Aviles was courtesy of Jim Jarmusch's first all-color film MYSTERY TRAIN. Even played a sleazy pimp opposite Morgan Freeman and Christopher Reeve in STREET TIME!
Oof! Correct you are! I only saw GHOST once, when it first hit tape, and recall Aviles being in it as a "bad guy", and mixed him up with the train ghost.
As a 7-year-old Star Wars-obsessed kid, I vividly remember experiencing the Holiday Special too. In fact, I watched it on WHIO, Channel 7-the same broadcast that’s now on RUclips. You’ve done an excellent job capturing the spirit and mindset of that era. Especially as kids. ruclips.net/video/6hH8rxarVG8/видео.htmlsi=PjJszODBMso7lbWB
Great Review! Perfect type of review. It’s exactly what I was looking for this movie. I look forward to seeing this film and love the story of the film makers seeking Pamela for this role! Looks like a genuine indie film!!!
I think the uproar was more about the fact that it was a Clint Eastwood film and he has done a lot for the company and since this may well be his final film, it deserved a bigger theatrical release - regardless of the merits or demerits of the actual film
Makes sense.
Great review man. I’m a huge Charley chase fan. I haven’t got this set yet but Iv Ben looking forward too it for a long time. The dude was such a great writer/director he had a character all his own for his work behind the camera. As much as I love Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Harry Langdon, Charlie chase was just pure fun. However Our Gang takes the cake for me when it comes to Theatrical Comedy Shorts
I love old time comedy (grew up watching the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, and Our Gang), so discovering "new" comedians from that era is a thrill. Chase really own his own guy, unlike anyone else from the era, the kinda rare persona that's generally not a down-on-his luck guy scraping by.
@ Yeah, chases best films were his silents. The first couple years of his talkies were pretty great, though 1933 and forward they just became bland and not very funny, same for his Columbia shorts, he started off at Columbia making classics but after the first dozen of those they became bland probably due to his heavy drinking
Be SURE to check out the Rifftrax treatment of this movie!!
Thanks so much for this! Saw it this summer at the Anteo Cinema in Milan. Sensational. Missed the extras of course, so now need to track down the Blu-ray release! Oh, and like you, loved those street scenes, brought back so many memories ...
Excellent overview. I really like Film Masters offerings, disc extras and handling of their releases. I'm going to place my order of this two disc set today, not sure why I waited this long. Thanks.
Actually it mentions the format wars in the opening crawl. Like V2000 vs Betamax vs VHS, VHS vs DVD (and laserdisk and in some way VCD). And after DVD vs Bluray vs HDDVD. No post apocalyptic stuff :)
Oops! I must have been distracted. Thanks for the clarification!
Solid review! Highly informative.
Commenting now to come back 6 months later to see how the channel is doing
The dont give up on your deeams message stuck wirh me but I thought the movie overall was fine.
Saw this in the theater and watched again with my parents on Thanksgiving. Great flick and breaking out from the nursing home on a scooter reminded us of the climax to Wild Goose (1973) by Bruce Cronin starring Babe Sargent I hope there are more "geriaction movies" in the future, maybe Thelma could join the Expendables franchise?
Love THE WILD GOOSE! It was shot in the town next to where I grew up, and I discovered it via a VHS copy at my local library. I know the same director and star did another film around the same time, but I've yet to see it. It's funny, I was just thinking about THE WILD GOOSE the other day, intending to look to see if there was a good copy out there, as mine was a slow-speed dupe of the tape at my library, taken from an old 16mm transfer in the 80s.
Edgar Kennedy is who you mean?
@@erniebaud Thank you!
I watched yesterday and think it might suffer in comparison to later light-dark period comedies. Royal Flash came to mind, possibly because of Reed. This movie feels like it’s somewhere between that and the ensemble adventure-comedies you mention.
“Our cast wishes to remain anonymous” 😝 😆 😂
Well worth a watch, and as you mentioned can be paired with Pizza: A Love Story
Thank you for the kind words!
awful pronunciation! try! 🤣
yep accidentally discovering giallo and poliziotteschi just a few months ago was the best thing that's ever happened to me 😅
They're two genres with a high number of entries, and just about all have something worth watching in them. Might be the best thing to happen to you lately cinematically, may not be the best thing for your wallet...
@cinemaniacstv 😅😅yeah just ordered about 6 blu rays actually
You purposely choose Mr. Robot for your thumbnail?
This was such an excellent review!
how does it look?? like remastered or what?
@@jessemonster7292 it looks great! Cauldron is dependable with their Blu quality.
@cinemaniacstv nice!
@@cinemaniacstv I'm ordering my copy tonight super excited
Creepy series 😅
Indeed! Something about those silent husks of skeletal knights...eek.
Great video. First time on your channel. I do have to say, this is actually NASCAR racing. They did film footage of some real NASCAR races including Daytona.
Oof! Thanks for the clarification!
Definitely appreciate you saying at the beginning “congrats on accomplishing a film, distribution, etc.”, a lot of people don’t get it. Thanks for checking it out ❤
Sounds awful :(
Thanks for your civil review, though you didn't like the film. I would like to share a couple of thoughts. This is a micro-budget production -- you either meet it on its own terms or risk bringing unfair or even misjudged reactions. At a budget barely $8000, and a six-day shooting schedule (one second unit evening), our limitations are obvious. Complaining that an elevator -- in a building that was chosen because it was period correct -- because you noticed braile markings is not terribly fair. Nor understanding that on a break-neck schedule an inappropriate haircut on an actor who'd agreed to get his hair cut and showed up otherwise is the kind of the thing that just happens on a micro production. That the private eye's office is big is obviously because the visions are being played out there -- but it's clearly an area that includes a reception desk and two P.I. desks. It's a noir fantasy that takes place largely in one person's mind. The level of acting reflects a large cast (24) that for a movie like this is admittedly variable, but the top four or five performances (amount of script time) are professional level (the two leads are pros who work a lot in this region). The cast consists of pro, pro-am and, yes, community theater talent. We've been blessed with some very good reviews that often acknowledge the low-budget and limitations of the production, but admire the script and the effort on a micro-budget. Your reaction is understandable, perhaps fair, and you were not, as I say, unkind; I'd even characterize it as thoughtful. And you acknowledge it's hard to make a movie. I would add: particularly when you have a budget that goes to actors, set building and limited costumes. That doesn't make it not worth doing.
I greatly appreciate the insight!
Such a good film hope it gets released in the UK
Just watched it, I am now transformed, and all that with zero calories. But forreal, tho, excellent film, I'm glad you liked it too.
I've been on the fence on whether I should blind buy. It seems like it might be worth it just based on extras alone including the CD soundtrack.
The soundtrack is cool and has a couple of bonus tracks, which may be cues not used in the film. Definitely an interesting packagage overall, and loaded.
Hi Mark, Since you work at the Mahoning Drive-In and I heard him interviewed in a podcast from there, I'm guessing your friend at the show that night is named "Geoff". -he's my friend, too and I know him from CineSea, the film convention in the movie. He's a great guy! I really hope you're right about "Film is Dead. Long Live Film!" being destined for Blu-Ray. I would love to see it on my own screen a couple of times per year! Peter Flynn is a regular joiner at CineSea and he showed us a working print, back when it was called "Viva Film!".
Peter says Bayview is set to release a Blu-ray and/or DVD early in 2025! And yes, Geoff is a good pal!
Re: Blu-Ray, I am so there! It was on TCM a few days ago, but we had to miss it because I would have had to pay Verizon a ton of extra cash every month to have the service upgraded. I wanted to go to the show you attended: I know a lot of those people who who were also there, but unfortunately I couldn't. Geoff is kind of a Ninja in the World of Film collecting! I do Super-8 and 16, but Geoff does 16 and 35!
agree one of my fav horror movies of all time
