The reason why is Rit is for natural fabrics like cotton; auto carpet (except for wool) is plastic, can't absorb the color.

I pinned this comment because I 100% overlooked this as a factor as to why it didn't work. Im not sure if other manufactures use natural fabrics and im not even sure if this carpet inst natural but hopefully this helps other people from running into the same issue I did. I appreciate it!

Rit does make a dye for synthetic materials it requires using boiling water. From their website. *Important Note: Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use Rit DyeMore with the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing.

@@ComicbookGuy70 you need to soak the carpet in a trash can full of boiled rit dye for about a week and then dry and wash all the dye out and it will be ink black until the end of time.

@@ComicbookGuy70 Also from their website "Add Salt or Vinegar (If Dyeing Cotton, Linen, Silk, Wool, Nylon Rayon and Ramie). To enhance the color: (1) add 1 cup of salt when dyeing fabrics containing cotton, rayon, ramie or linen; (2) add 1 cup of vinegar when dyeing fabrics containing nylon, silk or wool."

It failed because you used room temperature water. RIT dye is heat activated, and you should get the water as hot as possible. The dye didn't activate in your case and was just sitting on the surface. You should also add table salt to it to get the dye to activate easier in the BOILING HOT water, and attach to/soak into, the carpet fibers.

The correct product to dye a carpet is RIT Synthetic. This is the one to dye polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Additionally, it requires at least four paint coats to recover the same color; you are changing the color, so it needs more paint coats.

I did my carpet on my truck the same way you’re doing it with that dye. Spraying it with the bottle it came out fine. Just let it sit out in the sun for a while and spray some more scrub like you were doing baking Son.
