Is it a sin to criticize what is known to be as the greatest movie of all time? Well I'll take a chance by giving my thoughts on Citizen Kane in the most mentally broken-down state of mine as I can in this quarantine while still recognizing what made it into a household name of cinema.

I have no problem with anybody saying that they don’t like Citizen Kane, as long as they can admit that it was influential or well-made.

I hate Citizen Kane (yes, actually hate), but, the innovation and style truly was groundbreaking and for that, it must be admired. I graduated film school, so I hope that gives my thoughts a little credibility.

A part of me is frustrated with Citizen Kane, like you say, because I think there are far better and groundbreaking film that have some out since, yet most critics still say Kane is the best, which I don't really get. In fact, I really disliked Citizen Kane when I first saw it because I didn't get why it was so believed. Over time, I've grown to respect the film and admire what Welles was trying to say, but it's never been my favorite movie or anything.

Nice, nice, nice. Very well researched, I loved the way you flashbacked; very good job!

Personally, I appreciate what Citizen Kane accomplished on a technical level, but I don’t really find the film to be emotionally engaging. It doesn’t really move me in the same way Casablanca does, for example. From an entertainment perspective, I find Touch of Evil to be a superior film. I’ve only seen Citizen Kane maybe two or three times, but I’ve watched Touch of Evil at least a dozen times.

A very interesting and well articulated take as well as a nice summary on the technical achievements that make the film noteworthy. I'm really glad I recently discovered this channel (found it by finding your Sunset Blvd/Birdman video). I appreciate how you put in effort to approach reviewing film at a different angle (including this one in its unique approach reflecting on Citizen Kane). This channel definitely deserves more subscribers.
Also, I loved the observation regarding the dinosaurs!

Thanks a lot. Boy I thought nobody saw that review anymore. The Jurassic park video was very fun to make.

Hey! Great video! Yeah, I remember watching this movie in my freshman year of college. It was for my Intro to Cinema class as the film was considered to be a unique film for its time. Although I appreciate the creativity of the film, I can see why people hate this movie. I guess it is because our generation has seen a lot of movies that have experimented on complex storylines and plots way after Citizen Kane came out. My guess is that's why some audiences despise the film haha. Other than that, I love how creative and researched this video is. Keep it up!

Second Note: my last comment was made about 3/4 of the way into the video. I agree that it could be frustrating when compared to a film that basically transformed filmmaking. It’s hard not to for some people. It’s frustrating when other people put down movies because Kane did a lot first, and there are a lot of ideas that have come since then that are just as good as Kane. But what I think is the problem is the cult of personality. Fanatics are the ones who do compare others to Kane. It’s like those mega fans who say that “nothing/no one is better than (fill in brand/director here)”. For me, because of the attitude of fanatics, I have grown to love a lot of movies and directors equally.

The more I have studied this movie, the better it gets. Did not care for this one in my 20s.
Showing it to my classes, few get it though. It's not a movie for modern young people, I think. There's artwork for them, and then there's artwork that doesn't speak to them at all. Kane is in the latter group.
What I'd like to know is if in 15 years, your opinion stays the same or changes.

The first time I saw it on TCM and I fell asleep. The second viewing I got sucked into it.

It’s pretty easy to fall into groupthink when it comes to ranking these old films, so it’s great that you take a side opposite the mass praise.
Very well-researched and thorough video you’ve made here. A+ work

It is a dull film. A great film should be interesting and engaging.

So, you’re not so much about actually hating the movie, but the way others have pushed it as the greatest film. This is an understandable position. I have a friend who absolutely hates Wizard of Oz because in film school that’s what was talked about the most. I was actually interested in seeing if there was any point against the film itself, but it seems like you are critical of the culture surrounding the film and that is a good point.

Classic Modern Review and its great to be back. I mean, I’ve been doing a retrospective of the Back to the Future franchise on my channel for the past few weeks. So I guess I haven’t left. Keep up the good work.
