  • The Guilty Pleasures Cinema is where one celebrates the movies you're embarrassed to love. Now, not a dream, not a hoax, I, Scott Summerton, a film school graduate of 2002, go off on Citizen Kane and it's heralding as the greatest movie ever made.
    Let's do this.

Citizen Kane is the greatest movie that no one ever wants to watch.
"Citizen Kane is probably the best."
    "Wanna watch it then?"
"Nah, I'm not in the mood for a great movie."
"How about something by Christopher Nolan then?"
    "Yeah! Definitely!"

I have to give you props for admiting citizen kane is over rated. Personally I feel it stumbles as a narrative and has some out right annoying characters.

Just kinda tired of hearing people praise it blindly is all. Sure it did a lot and things would be different without it but yeah, we've surely done better since the early 40s, right? Or is everything since just failed attempts?

There's a mystery at the centre of all Welles films. The meaning always seems allusive. Like films in search of meaning, that ultimately fail
With Kane, you always get the impression that the central character is unknowable. Much like we all are. That meaning is just something we impose on the universe, a human construction to try and make sense of the world.

Citizen Kane is straight up boring. Credit where credits due, Welles did a lot for cinema but the end result of Citizen Kane is its boring, great camera angles don't make it exciting, unless you're filmmaker, for everyone else, probably wouldn't really know what they did until it was pointed out. I mean, how many times do you watch a movie and say "wow, they must be using a 10mm lens at 30 degree angle, this is amazing" ... you either like the end result or you don't, regardless of filmmaking techniques and Citizen Kane is just boring...
It gives away the ending at the beginning, then spends 2 hours searching for the answer which they never find, and then just lets the audience know it was what we saw in the beginning all along, in other words, it wastes 2 hours of your life.
But people get so up in their own arses about it, greatest of all time? I don't think so. A Touch of Evil had an amazing 3 minute no cut opening with the camera on a crane moving around town... THAT far exceeds anything in Kane, and it wasn't a BS waste of time story

That is possible honestly, considering it's constantly hailed as the greatest. :)

I think you need to show some respect. Yes it is a difficult movie to enjoy and I think that the movie is a victim of its own success with it's portrayal and depiction of the inner emptiness of the hugely charismatic newspaper tycoon. However, this film is an absolute treasure trove of hidden meaning and subliminal messages that requires numerous viewings to really appreciate. That this came from a 25 year old is truly humbling. Predator, with all due respect, is child's play in comparison and as a supposed lover of film, you should be ashamed to boast this as your favourite film of all time.

Thank you for the reply! Your opening really captures the whole thing though, I don't need to show it respect, respect has to be earned. Far too many blindly respect it, and yes it is an incredible piece of art that was made by someone literally not knowing the rules and therefore his outside the box thinking helped establish film language as we know it. However to still, in 2017, say nothing has surpassed this work from 1941 just seems crazy to me. Kane will be something people talk about in 100 years still with reverence, that is not in dispute. To compare Predator to it is apples and oranges yes, but you again come back to saying "as a supposed lover of film you should be ashamed"... really once again saying that all filmlovers should blindly revere Citizen Kane. No. Not blindly! ALL should watch it. Study it. Learn from it. But to just say "yes, this is the best, we have never done better" is foolish.

I don't say you or anyone should blindly revere it as the best - The Exorcist is probably my favourite film of all time. But I do think one should afford it the respect it so deserves.

That was the key component to the whole thing I was getting at though, and personally don't feel Citizen Kane deserves as much respect as is being heaped on it, again, often blindly. I'm also not trying to say anyone is wrong about any of these either, it's all opinion based when discussing art and whatnot. I just feel that on a whole, Kane is grossly overrated. It's a legendary accomplishment that is hailed as the greatest because of its status more than what it is, nowadays.

Guilty Pleasures Cinema blasphemy! I urge you to stick it on, pick a scene, turn the sound off, freeze frame, go back and forth and see what delights start popping out before your eyes. That reporters scene straight after the newsreel for instance where he's standing in the shaft of light waving his hands like a conductor of an orchestra silhouetted in black looks like an actual cartoon. Or the scene with Thatcher where Kane is broke and actually getting smaller and bigger in size before your eyes is amazing.

This is the most irrelevant piece of rambling I could have witnessed. The technical aspects of Citizen Kane alone aren't what make it great. Innovative yes, but it's also great in every aspect of it's craft. You argue against arbitrary arguments that are never made. Nobody ever actually says Citizen Kane is the best because it was first...You just assume people use that rationale when rating it that high. It had a great influence on many films and in that aspect it is certainly respectable. But the film alone IS great. It is entertaining...It is touching and poignant. It's complex, well-acted, funny, and beautifully shot and directed. As a film, it is easily one of the best ever created. It's not my favorite film of all time, but it's in my top 10. Of course it's all subjective, therefore saying it's overrated is meaningless as it obviously isn't. It gets the rating that the people agree upon. It is probably the most often cited "Best film of all time" period, therefore it is "rated" correctly. There is no objective way to argue other wise as consensus is the best form of rating we have. So by that standard, it is the best of all time. You can disagree with that but it doesn't change the fact that many others, myself included, acknowledge it's supreme greatness...To compare it to Skyfall is a joke. Not because it's new, but because it doesn't even come close to it's complexity, storytelling, or direction.

Thanks for the reply, apologies for coming across a bit rude but for some reason its natural instinct for me when disagreeing with someone on YT haha...So used to hostile arguments so its refreshing to see you respond politely despite my obvious hostility. All that being said, by consensus I was aiming more at critical and audience rating consensus rather than financial success. I'll respond with more later but I got to get back to .y movie as people are waiting for me (Once upon a time in the west) cheers.
Okay I'm back! A certain family member fell asleep -.- so we had to cut it early :)
Anyways, I think that Citizen Kane on it's own, is a masterpiece. In fact, I am strictly against rating/judging movies based on 'impact' because I am of the opinion that impact has nothing to do with quality inherently. I do agree that people who haven't seen a movie shouldn't comment on them, and sympathize with that. Citizen Kane does seem to be a movie that doesn't click with some people for whatever reason. Based on this video it comes off that you didn't really enjoy the experience of watching the film, I had quite the opposite experience. People seem to have the idea that the only people who appreciate Citizen Kane are those who recognize it's technical brilliance and cultural impact, and are often associated with being "stuffy, pretentious, etc". So naturally being a 19 year old people question my interest in it on other boards :).
Anyways, do you have any criticism of the movie elements itself? The elegance of it's plot, it's storytelling style, the dialogue, the humor? I think it excelled in every category. Could it just be that you simply didn't enjoy it? Because if so I some classic films that I simply just don't resonate with for whatever reason, perhaps I don't identify with the narrative, or the subject matters doesn't interest me, etc, etc (Taxi Driver, Lawrence of Arabia, even though I actually did enjoy those, I don't hold them in the same acclaim as others due to lack of interest) But I wouldn't call those films overrated, but rather that I can respect the film rather than truly love it. I think I accept that I'm probably the one in the wrong when it comes to disliking these things since I can obviously see the beauty within it but simply only be able to hold it at arms length. Some films that I love tremendously have the same effect on others, Blade Runner for instance, is one of my favorite films of all time, and MANY people find it boring, slow, uninteresting, etc, etc.
Lol, anyways, all this overlong text is really just a question; Is your dislike of Citizen Kane simply from the fact that it is not entertaining?

      *****
In that case we are in agreement then :). I don't think Citizen Kane is the best film ever made, and I don't think any film will always be, or at least, must always be.
