Furthermore: I should add that, for whatever reason, Kane's mother makes it clear that she wants to remove her son from his father. The situation is ambiguous in the film, but a huge yearly sum of money from their estate quickly placates the father! It's odd, but apparently Charles never sees either parent again! He does, however, manage to acquire the sled Rosebud! Prof. Dr. Dr. H. James Birx, New York

Answer: Kane's mother gave Charles up because a huge gold mine was found on their property and, because he would eventually become one of the most wealthy persons in the world, she wanted him to have a proper education & environment in New York City. Prof. Dr. Dr. H. James Birx, New York

Does anyone know why Kane's parents gave him up?

In the film "Citizen Kane," the character Charles Foster Kane, often referred to as "Citizen Kane," was given up by his parents, who were named Mr. and Mrs. Kane. There are several reasons presented in the film for why Kane's parents made this decision:
Financial Success: Kane's parents were relatively poor, and they owned a small boarding house in Colorado. They struck it rich when they discovered gold on their property. With newfound wealth, they decided to send young Kane away to be raised by a wealthy guardian in order to provide him with a better life and more opportunities than they could offer.
Lack of Parental Affection: Kane's parents were shown as distant and unaffectionate towards their son. In one of the film's pivotal scenes, Kane's mother decides to give him up, not out of love, but because she believes that he would have a happier life elsewhere.
Desire for Education and Culture: Mr. and Mrs. Kane believed that sending their son to the East, away from the rough and uncultured atmosphere of their mining town, would give him a chance for a better education and cultural refinement.
Pressure from the Banker: The Kanes' banker, Mr. Thatcher, played a significant role in the decision. He convinced Kane's parents that it was in the child's best interest to be raised by a wealthy and educated guardian. The banker believed that this would ensure that Kane would grow up with the privileges and advantages that his wealth could offer.
Ultimately, "Citizen Kane" explores the impact of this early separation from his parents on Kane's life and character. The film delves into the complexities of his relationships and the profound effect that his upbringing had on his later ambitions and loneliness, making it a central theme in the movie.

@@iitutorcom Thank you so much for that explanation. I have never seen the film but always wondered who would do such a thing. I had several theories but wasn't sure. On a lighter note i always felt his mom was a real witch 😉
