Maleficent was crazy EVIL 🧙‍♀️ ... and FUN at the same time. I soo want to know more about her ➡️ is the live-action adaptation worth checking out?

I don't know if someone has mentioned this, but the entire of score of "Sleeping Beauty" (including the songs like "Once Upon A Dream") was adapted from Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" ballet. The melodies of all the songs are taken from that classical score, just with lyrics added. Just another fascinating and beautiful aspect of this movie. It's always been my favorite Disney film.

This was my favorite Disney film when I was growing up. Everything about it is perfect. I love the names of the Good Fairies-- Flora (plant life), Fauna (animal life), and Merriweather (merry weather). Also that Aurora/Rose was raised in nature without all the "amenities" of her royal birth and was humble, kind, virtuous... this story reinforced for me that what matters is to be a good person. I also love the Evil Fairy Maleficent-- hateful, spiteful, and powerful-- she's the Jungian Shadow to Aurora/Rose. She, too, is beautiful, graceful, and filled with virtue, but she uses her "gifts" for selfish, destructive purposes. Even Prince Philip (who really doesn't have much of a personality tbh) could be seen to represent the Jungian Animus, in that his purpose is to rescue/protect his feminine counterpart using the virtues/"gifts" of strength, determination, courage, etc.
Thank you for sharing your reaction to this timeless classic! I enjoy the content you create here.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful character breakdown and support. You are spot on with everything, and I'd say I love the fact that you pointed out Aurora/Rose growing up without 'amenities.' She is so pure, innocent, kind, and downright a joy to see on the screen! And to that Maleficent! I think my eyes will never recover from the epic delight that was the 'dragon transformation!'

I know I’m 2 yrs late w/this comment, but I disagree about Prince Philip not having much personality. At least compared to the other Disney princes, lol. The ones in Snow White & Cinderella are hardly in the movies at all. Young Philip has a skeptical reaction to baby Aurora, talks to his horse (which has tons of personality of his own), is smooth & charming when he meets Briar Rose, stands up to his father about marrying the peasant girl he just met & fights to rescue his princess (w/the help of the good faires)! Pretty 3-D for a Disney prince of that era. 😜

If you think about it.... the entire kingdom missed out and slept though the most epic Dragon fight.
Phillip by far did the most heroic act any prince could perform. Fought past a horde of angry goblins to escape the Forbidden mountain, eluded the attacks of a powerful sorceress, forged his way through a forest of impenetrable thorns, and fought a fire-breathing dragon without hesitation to save Aurora.

The Spindle scene is one of my favourite scenes in the movie and also one of the scariest scenes in animated Disney history.
Many people were terrified by that scene as kids especially when Maleficent appears in the fireplace with her eyes piercing out of the darkness. It wouldn't be surprising if this caused many kids to be scared of the dark because of that scene.
Speaking of the dark, the shots of Aurora following the glowing green orb with the darkness following behind her is pretty creepy but brilliantly done.

    • @latenightswithsammy
      @latenightswithsammy  2 года назад +6

Jonathan ... you are 100% on point. First off, that green orb reflecting off the walls was pure cinema! I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to see that scene as a child ... at to that, that Aurora touches the Spindle! It's heartbreaking, devastating, and downright scary all at once. Also, as you pointed out, Maleficent's entrance ... Genius movie making!

      @Spindler2007 2 года назад +6

@@latenightswithsammy indeed. Every detail is brilliantly well done. The music even calls out Aurora's name at the beginning of the scene which makes it even more creepier.
What is also creepier is that Maleficent's eyeline doesn't match the direction of where she is facing. What I mean is she is facing Aurora but her eyes are looking a little to her left. It's like she is looking at both Aurora and us.

@@latenightswithsammy Thanks. For some reason, scary moments in animated Disney movies never scared me as a kid but I did find them a little creepy which is what made them so good and made me enjoy Disney movies even more that there is this darker side to these fairy tales.

And to that, I think it's a smart move from a movie-making perspective. Creepy moments always tend to linger longer than a good scare. It also bumps up the reachability factor (prime example for me, David Fincher's Zodiac). Also, I think Disney + Pixar are genuinely masterful in making a film for multiple audiences; there is always something for everyone.

“Now shall you deal with me, O prince, and all the powers of HELL!!!” Disney, Walt Disney himself, was so fearless, creatively. His goal was to entertain as broad a range of people as he could, using his art, which was animation. It’s been only comparatively recently that the idea has emerged that animation is predominantly or only for children.

This movie is so full of great disney voice acting. The actress who played Flora was also the main female elephant in Dumbo AND the Jungle Book, the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. The voice of Maleficient was also the voice of Lady Tremaine, Cinderella's stepmother.
Malificent is by far the best disney villain of all time. The Jolie version was a pretty film for the most part, but I felt it way overused CGI. The good fairies were turned into such ugly character designs that I found it impossible to take them seriously. But my biggest problem is that they took away Malificent's mystique. In SB, there is no reason for her to be as vile and soulless as she is, the Jolie version is simplying Disney being apologists and trying to explain her evil away by making her a tramatized woman. In doing so, they no only make her victimhood the only motivation she has for easily 80% of the movie's run-time. By doing this, they completely destroy the humanity of the OG character of Stefan, strip the story of any underlying romance (for EVERY character), and render the underlying source material unrecognizable. I was not a fan. Don't watch it expecting to understand THIS Malificent, because it's a completely different story altogether.
P.S. Sam, Disney animators did record live action to assist them in the animation to ensure it was as close to perfection as they could make it. This is one of my favorite Disney movies.

The DVD/BluRay for Sleeping Beauty has a commentary track from three experts, one of whom is John Lasseter, who directed and animated so much for Pixar. And he absolutely geeks out over the final fight sequence, including the race to the castle, the thorn forest, and especially the dragon. And he's right, it's stunning, and I can testify as someone who was a kid when it first came out, that it seemed unexpectedly dramatic and powerful for a Disney animated film. When Maleficent said "you now face me and all the powers of HELL!" it was shocking. I don't think anyone had ever said "Hell" in a Disney movie before, but also it meant that she was specifically a force of pure evil, working for the devil.

As for Maleficents' backstory there is literally nothing, not even in the source material.
You see "Sleeping Beauty" is a fairy tale, the earliest written down version of which is from 1696. And that is just the earliest version we know about. The story is probably even older than that.
Anyways, in the original story Maleficent is just a nameless fairy which was not invited because there weren't enough golden plates to serve the dinner on.
The character changed a bit over the centuries but the first time she became "Maleficent" was actually in this very movie.
So there is really not much of a backstory. She is just an extremely evil fairy.
Of course in the movie with Angelina Jolie she is turned into an anti-hero.
Now I don't want to spoil anything but the film follows "Sleeping Beauty" in quite a few points.
The difference is that Maleficent has an actual reason to do what she does which is way better and more understandable than just to be not invited to a party.
And the story develops from that idea.
It's different but it's actually quite entertaining.
Plus it does indeed provide a backstory for the character.
And there is a sequel, which is apparently really bad. But I haven't watched that one yet so I can't say anything about it.

    • @latenightswithsammy

    • @TeeJayDesastron
      @TeeJayDesastron 2 года назад

Yes, pretty much. The movie with Angelina Jolie is its' own thing.
I can't really tell you anything about it without spoiling it so.....
Well, I guess you could say it is a matter of potential.
In the animated movie Maleficent is very clearly a purely evil being. She calls herself the mistress of all evil and that is indeed what she is.
In the version with Angelina Jolie Maleficent has the potential for both good and evil within her, and we do get to see several different sides of her, sides which the animated version simply does not have.

I refuse to call him "the king," as you do, because the king of his homeland is still alive, and is a bumbling fool called Hubert. King Hubert, for instance is (later in the film) seen using a fish as a sword, attacking Aurora's father, King Stephen, who holds up a serving platter in self defense. If I recall, however, they were both sloppy drunk at the time.

    A few points -
1.) They’re the 3 good fairies, not hood fairies lol. The 3 hood fairies sounds like a Wayans Brothers parody of these characters haha.
2.) During the escape sequence the goons tried pouring burning oil on the prince, not acid (pouring oil on attackers was a common anti-siege tactic)
3.) There’s no connection to Bambi but it’s a common trope to have the main female character have some kind of association with nature. It’s an archetypal (indicating the Divine Feminine) thing that goes way back in storytelling, and now you can see it in the stereotype of the Disney Princess with the forest animals all around her.
4.) Prince Philip is NOTHING like Joffrey from Game of Thrones lol.
5.) Philip was in control of his sword and shield. As a prince he would have been trained as a knight or warrior, so he knew what he was doing during that final act, he wasn’t just being magically guided or anything. He might have had help in the final battle but he’s also a legitimate badass on his own. Note that we’re introduced to him as an adult riding a horse, and horsemanship was considered a military discipline for a knight at the time, as knights would ride into battle on horseback (the term chivalry actually means something like military skill with a horse in French). So Philip is actually a warrior prince, hence why he stood a chance against Maleficent.

This is my favorite Disney movie of all time. I'm glad you enjoyed it. For me, Maleficent makes the movie. Aurora is a nice princess but she's not that interesting. I would argue the main characters are the three good fairies. But even as a kid I thought Maleficent was cool as hell. Her design is so memorable with the green flames and her black gown and horns. And you can't forget to credit the amazing Eleanor Audley for her voice work and live action reference for the animators.
There's a clip somewhere on RUclips called "Reconstructed Recording Session with Eleanor Audley" from the late 60s when she voiced Madame Leota for the Haunted Mansion Disney World ride. 15:55 - Philip caught Aurora dancing around with his clothes, which were just stolen from him. For all he knows, she was directly involved in the theft and pulling a prank on him. I can understand why he would want to do some playful payback by swapping places with her dance partner (who is *still* wearing the stolen clothes). He meant no harm by it, and he's clearly not a bad person.
Here's a fun take on "Once Upon A Dream" and the Aurora/Philip relationship:
Aurora says that she has see and spent time with her dream prince "so many times." When she and Philip cross paths in the forest, the latter tells the former that they have met before; they've met "once upon a dream." One could argue that he was just going along with Aurora's game, but if that's the case, why did he repeat the phrase in front of King Hubert? Why would he tell his father that he met his true love "once upon a dream" when Hubert wasn't there and wouldn't know what Philip is talking about?
SLEEPING BEAUTY takes place in a magical world where fairies and curses exist. I don't think interacting with people via dreams is outside the realm of possibility. What if Aurora and Philip *have* meet each other through their dreams long before Aurora's sixteenth birthday? That would explain why they warmed up to each other so quickly.

If she had had the good sense to keep her mouth shut about "you weren't wanted" to Maleficent, the royals could have played it off as their royal messenger being at fault, and apologize for the mix-up, claiming that they're so glad to see her and that she could still make it to the party. Super rare for Disney. They actually showed blood. Not alien splooge, not demonic-looking tar. Real, red blood. I can only think of one other animated Disney flick to do the same. Encanto showed literal human blood. Considering that we've had countless villains go splat on the ground as they fall to their deaths, we've had combo-deaths such a Ursula (who was impaled and struck by lightning at the same time), and we've even had at least one animated film dragging the villain into hell, you would think that at least a few deaths would have shown blood onscreen. Disney death-scenes are abundant, but are almost always, somehow, bloodless.

It's possible that this was an accident, but in the vision shown to us by Maleficent, both Philip and his horse are translucent. If it wasn't an accident, it could imply that they are both dead by the time he rides back to Stephen's castle. If they are, somehow, still alive, then Aurora, who was already at breaking point before, will wake up, take one look at the impossible age difference (her being 16 and him over 100), and her mind would snap. I can't believe this, but I am starting to find the whole situation downright hysterical!
PS: Accidents do happen with a project this huge. Maleficent was supposed to be white, but a mistake was made in the palate used for the film, turning her skintone to something quite... Different. Vegetable. Green. And now it's become a marker for shorthand. Her green face is now so iconic that, when I watched Maleficent for the first time, I realized that if the narrator had not called her that from the get, I'd never have dreamed that the cute little fairy child would ever be anything bad.

SLEEPING BEAUTY marked the end of the Disney Golden Era. First, it was anticipated as a major production worth of Road Show engagements, produced in the the 65mm Technirama process with multi-channel sound. If lost money for a number of reasons in addition to its over-produced, over anticipated reaction. It was reduced to Cinemascope 35mm prints for general release afterward. In spite of its tremendous production value, it was a box office failure on a number of levels. As beautiful as it is, there are problems with the film. Some Critics felt that the "Princess" film had already been visited twice before, and was handled far more successfully, which may seem like a logical criticism.
Compared to SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA, there is not much that the main character does in SLEEPING BEAUTY that connects the audience other than the curse that hangs over her. There are no scenes for the development of her character, and when we finally see her at age 16, she seems too sophisticated for a child reared in isolation with three "peasant women." It is more jarring hearing such a deep, Operatic voice coming from Aurora, whose speaking voice does not match. This seems more artificial than "regal," as if it should be assumed to be in character of a Princess. This is something that was kept consistent in the previous Princess films. Another challenge is that The Sleeping Beauty was too many names. First , she is christened "Aurora." Then she is known as "Briar Rose" while in hiding, called "Rose" for short. I heard children asking their parent who the fairies were talking about with all of these names in different parts of the movie. In SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA there is no confusion.
The expense and losses on SLEEPING BEAUTY nearly ended Disney animation. Part of its expense was in the use of four colored outlines on the characters, which was time consuming and expensive to do. Near the end of production, Xerography was introduced as a cost-saving measure. Following completion, Disney had a huge layoff of staff, which came at the time that Hanna-Barbera was expanding. So there was an available talent poor of Inkers and cel painters, as well as Animators.
At this time, Disney was making huge profits in its black and white live action comedy films like THE SHAGGY DOG. This was cited by Roy Disney who urged Disney to close the Animation Department based on these figures. Walt disagreed since animation was what built the studio and it would have been an abandonment of their audience to discontinue this. A compromise was met where their next feature had to be produced at lower cost in order to stay in business. This led to the art style used in 101 Dalmatians, which made full use of Xerography to replace the hand inking process. It was also used to advantage for duplicating images of puppies, as well as image print outs of certain live action reference footage of props such as vehicles. So SLEEPING BEAUTY was the closing of an era, and the link to the next.

Lord of the rings was JRR Tolkein. The three Good fairies are a bit too much the focus of the movie, but I lo e them, and I am nitpicking. Don't complain about the grammar or spelling, please. I have not found my glasses yet.

This movie doesn't reference the lord of the rings films. If anything it may have inspired them.

Suggestion for you - The Neverending Story trilogy, that's if you haven't seen them, the first two are good, the third not so much

The Angelina Jolie movie is a reimagining which interprets Maleficent as the hero and changes a lot of stuff, so if you're looking for a backstory for the original, 1959 Maleficent, you won't find it there. But the movie's passable if you take it as its own thing.

Wow ... Maleficent as the hero?! That's quite a pitch. Now, if I were curious about a backstory of 1959's Maleficent, is there any source material that delves into it? Cause TBH ... She is an awesome villain!

@@latenightswithsammy She is an awesome villain! One of my favourites. Honestly, there isn't much information about the 1959 version, because all the subsequent adaptations tend to reinvent the character and portray her as misunderstood. I would love to see a backstory which keeps her evil, though.
There's a lot of content about the filmmakers' development of her, if you're interested in that. Concept art, animation facts, etc. For instance, her head animator, Marc Davis, was usually assigned heroines (Snow White, Cinderella, Tinker Bell, Aurora) because he was good at drawing female characters. He really wanted to do a villain and Disney finally gave him Maleficent because they wanted her to be elegant and beautiful.

We're completely on the same page! I would love to see an animated series ... OR something loyal and somewhat "builds" upon the 1959 version.
That's super interesting! I had no idea there was a 'dedicated animator' for Maleficent! And to that, an addition of a villain among his protagonist-filled portfolio. What a great craftsman! Oh, and that was awesome trivia! Thank you so much for sharing this 😊

That would be wonderful! The film and characters definitely have a ton of untapped potential that no one's really built upon in an authentic way. I would love a series set in the same world.
No problem! I highly recommend checking out the making of the film. There's a lot of info about Maleficent and her design process out there.

Idc if its disney princess movie, and i dont think disney princess series or anything like that exist, beacuse this is epic medieval based movie, i mean in that time(14 century) lots of things happen in balkans (famous Kosovo battle of Serbs and ottomans{turks})
