They could also make the Dock work as a video receiver for a signal sent by the Switch 2 in your hands, allowing DS games to work with two screens just like the Wii U Virtual Console did with the GamePad.
Now I can finally see a potential Kid Icarus Uprising HD happening. With how precise you have to be when aiming in that game using a joystick would not be fun. Pointer controls would have been viable but full on mouse control would arguably be a better experience than the original.
I trust NERD to cook with this idea. At first I was thinking "yeah this solves the touch screen issue but how would you press buttons?" I totally think Nintendo could use the similar idea from Konami’s Castlevania Dominus Collection since Konami did put out the three Castlevania Nintendo DS games and you could use it without the extra screen on it.
If that C button turns out to be Cast allowing the NS2 to cast to the TV without being docked then we could potentially see a return of assymetric gameplay and a very fulfilling DS comeback.
Honestly I don’t know why people think this is something crazy. Nintendo has hinted Switch being the the sweet spot they’ve found and will move forward from here, and it makes sense they’re putting the whole library of games on it and its successor(s).
It's a neat idea, but I don't see how it would be used beyond just DS/3DS games. Nintendo struggled for more than 4 years to come up with good ideas to use essentially the same gimmick with the Wii U Gamepad, and I don't see Nintendo putting a button on their console basically *just* for NSO
@@Silph_Co yeah that is a good point for sure. I guess this would rely on switch 2 games also using 2 screens to be worth it. I doubt that would be a thing for mobile to work.
Now that there’s a USB socket on both sides of the Switch2, maybe there could be an accessory where you can turn the switch2 to a vertical display and connect the joycons to the sides for a DS-esque screen split
Exactly, that layout would be the best option in my opinion too. They could easily make the accessory snap into place securely at the bottom with the magnets and be able to hold both Joy-Con similar to the Joy-Con Grip.
I can see that in new games, or even fully ported DS/3DS games, not in a virtual console, you can't access buttons in that way... But, for new games looks amazing
I just want a Mario Galaxy 2 port. Seems like the reason they didn't do it the first time was the lack of self-calibrating pointer functionality the Wii had. Doesn't seem like the Switch 2 is fixing that, hopefully they'll come up with another solution
With the additional USB port on the top it will be possible to attach a 2nd display, which may even support stereoscopic images for the full 3DS experience. Therefore I’m quite sure they will add the DS games to the NSO service soon.
The only problem will be finding a surface to use it as a mouse if you're playing in a "traditional" setup; TV and chair. I could use the mouse on my leg, so long as I don't need to move the mouse too much but, I don't know.
The mouse controls are also really nice for tabletop mode. Having to move your finger across an 8 inch display while your whole hand blocks the screen sounds really annoying. Hope we get a flipnote studios release.
you don't technically need a desk for this to work, a modern mouse works perfectly fine on most types of pants, so you can use your lap if you are deskless
There are a lot of classic games that I enjoy going back to and one thing that I kind of miss is the DS era. I’ve always hoped there could be a way to bring back DS (and potentially 3DS) on the Switch or a future system so using it as a mouse for the touch screen could be a neat compromise. One thing I’d like to see is some way to attach Joy-con to the top and bottom so you could use the Switch vertically for DS games perhaps. Maybe something that connects into each USB C port that allows the new Joy-con to attach into?
Honestly after the steam deck i just want everything to have at least one touchpad, id much prefer that over detaching the joycon and having to use it on a flat surface. Honestly though im not sure if they'll do something like this, itll probably just be some gimmick feature used in "1 2 switch 2" or whatever and then be mostly forgotten
My "C button" theory: it turns the optical sensors on and off so that you can naturally alternate between using the controller and gliding on a desktop or your lap
They should have gone with the reverse-Wii U wireless dock to the TV idea for DS and 3DS games porting. Once again the community comes up with better ideas that Nintendo themselves.
Actually, now that you mention it, I think it CAN cast from dock to tv. Pretty sure both the top and bottom of it had at least a USB-C port, meaning the dock could be modified for that.
Another idea is a wireless cast to TV by having Chromcast capable dock. You will be able to use switch with controls and it's screen like bottom screen, and TV will be your top screen
The 4 buttons and analog stick also makes it much more possible. Using the analog stick or the left joycon directional buttons to move and the bottons on the right joycon would of course mirror the DS face buttons
Even if there is no casting to the dock, perhaps you could just connect Switch 2 via standard USC-C from the top port to the dock and play 'dualscreen' for DS games with the Switch2 acting as the touchscreen+ controls and the dock simply displaying the top screen to the Display.
I've seen speculation that the mysterious C button is a "cast" button, where the Switch will run a game and cast onto a TV, becoming basically a Wii U setup.
A few nintendo game options that have obvious mouse usage potential are Mario Maker and Mario Paint! We could get SNES Mario Paint for NSO, or maybe even a brand new Mario Paint. I think it would be cool if the dock was able to stream a screen to the dock and TV, while still using it in handheld; It'd work basically like the Wii U in reverse
Another idea is that you could use some of the extra buttons as hotkey tapping specific spots. So like a game that doesn't need the face buttons for the right side because you're expected to be using the stylus could let you use ABXY for tapping specific spots of the bottom screen to do things like open a map or something.
Ah yes, I love spending $100 on used DS games instead of just playing them digitally on a fresher, smoother, more user friendly console that would generally improve the overall playability of every single DS/3DS game known to fucking man. Without also having to go to that one single dude in town that knows how to repair a 20 year old handheld just so I can play said $100 generic DS games that I had to collect from eBay.
Side note, playing Ouendan/ Elite Beat Agents through the Wii U VC is a phenomenal experience. An official port with higher quality music would have been perfect for that system, but alas...
DS emu in NSO makes much sense in handheld mode with an accesory to play switch vertical.... like it already exist for switch 1 but this time could be an official accesory
I think that Switch 2 will be able to play DS and 3DS games via a new NSO app, but it will only be possible in handheld mode and require purchasing a second screen accessory that the main system slots into and uses one of the USB slots for power and data transfer.
I'm still hoping for them to implement the ability to make the Switch itself a controller similar to the Wii U gamepad. If they could cast from the console to the gamepad on the Wii U, allowing the Switch to interact wirelessly with the dock to put games on the TV should be a possibility. This would not only allow for another way to play DS and 3DS with two actual screens, but it would allow Wii U games to be playable in their original form as well. Allowing Nintendo to put their entire library of games on one console.
As someone who hates playing first person shooter games with a controller and only plays on PC. It would be amazing to have a console that supports mouse play right out of the box. Imagine metroid prime 4 with a mouse. Or any competitive shooter.
Before this video, I didn't understand how the mouse controls would make sense for a DS game. The mockup helped visualize that much better than others could and now Im convinced that'd make a good feature, although I'd personally prefer/hope the pro control has a PS style touch pad for DS games when docked. That'd still be my preference.
I just want nintendo to release an official adapter like the flip grip / TATE mode adapter, to put the joycons on the top and bottom spine of the switch, so you can play ds/3ds games with the screen in portait mode showing the two ds/3ds screens vertically
Hi john! Hope you, and your family are well! Honestly, switch has always seemed like a perfect handheld to emulate ds/3ds games if Nintendo so wished! With switch 2, they just need to release a magnetically attached vertical mount to snap the new joycona into for portrait mode, and there you go, ds/3ds mode! A bracket already exists for switch 1, so bring it over ninty! Though I'd be happy too for Gamecube on NSO with Animal Crossing 😅 Hopefully, this, and this videos insight, becomes reality!
Was thinking this myself. Yeah, got 3D Land, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks on Switch 2 alongside the rumored WWHD/TPHD ports and you have the ultimate Zelda and Mario machine. Well like you also said 3D Land, NSMB1/2/Wii, and Galaxy 2 are still needed for Mario but imo those are likely too. NSO could and most likely will benefit a lot from this. DS/GCN on standard sub, 3DS/Wii on Expansion Pass (with both probably receiving a $5-$10 increase) and you have a winning formula. Maybe even get SM64 DS on that bad boy.
It still feels like a huge compromise (I personally hate using the mouse when em*lating DS on a PC) but the great part is that this is literally a hand held with a touch screen so touch controlls would 100% be an option and I'd be so excited for that.
I think this would work out a bit better than emulating wirh mouse and keyboard. You'll have the other joycon in tour off hand to better line up with the hand holding your DS, and you could easily shift your grip on the mouse joycon to shift back to using the button controls.
I wish Switch 2 had a Dual Screen and a Stylus This optical sensor will be cool for FPS and RTS games on Switch DS like this will feel like a PC emulator, so I am out... But I have a working 3DS with a couple DS and 3DS games in my collection
I'm legally obligated to mention the drift that occurs on Switch is actually the os correcting what it thinks is drift. Often it mistakes micro-adjustments as drift and will recenter the camera/cursor. Basically Nintendo created their own drift (also Sony seems to do this too on their systems). Gyro drift is a thing that occurs but usually after a while due to temperature change and slowly losing track of its position. Gyro drift also looks a lot like stick drift with a continuous movement in a direction. Switch drift is goes for a bit and stops. Nintendo (and Sony) need to take a lesson from Valve and implement a auto-recalibration system that detects the stableness (aka stillness) of the controller before recalibrating. Hopefully the Switch 2's os deals with that issue.
I felt pretty meh about the mouse mode rumors until the second sideways JoyCon slid onto the screen in the reveal trailer. Two mice seems so obvious in hindsight but really surprised me.
I always thought the switch 1 could have already have DS games, they could have sold a periferal to make the screen vertical and put the joy cons on the sides (3rd party exists already) and then split the screen in two. It already has touch controls

Not everyone can spend 500 bucks on dragon quest 5 dude. I love my ds but like, come on

@@jojloj7348 how about using a 3DS to play DS games?
Could the top usb c port be used for an additional screen attachment for DS/3DS?
Not happening
The switch has always had a touchscreen
Yes, but the touchscreen is inaccessible when docked.
@@omarg2079... And the switch 2 is the same?
Side note, playing Ouendan/ Elite Beat Agents through the Wii U VC is a phenomenal experience. An official port with higher quality music would have been perfect for that system, but alas...
I hope we can use it on our couches and laps. I want to chill
Cool idea! I definitely want DS and Wii U games, but who plays Nintendo at a desk? Broader functionality at least would be nice.
I really hope for a noteable point and click adventure presence on the Switch 2 after seeing the optical sensor.
Holy cow I'm so hyped now!
As someone who hates playing first person shooter games with a controller and only plays on PC. It would be amazing to have a console that supports mouse play right out of the box. Imagine metroid prime 4 with a mouse. Or any competitive shooter.
Not sure about using the mouse for DS games, but I am looking forward to it transforming titles like Civilization and XCOM.
So because Switch 2 is using magnets it might be easier for Nintendo to make a dedicated vertical grip for handheld DS play.
The mouse can be used for playing Mario Kart Maker.
Though I'd be happy too for Gamecube on NSO with Animal Crossing 😅
Hopefully, this, and this videos insight, becomes reality!
The Nintendo Switch 2 will have games.
@@InfinitySevens Of course it will Captain Obvious.
Source??
@@No_True_Scotsman It’s a joke
Yup unlike ps5 🥳
@ The PS5 DOES have games!
I can 1-up that: since they're coming back, they could release a 3D display connected to the top USB C port
@@Andyjoe522 unless you're playing a game that exclusively uses the touch screen this sounds incredibly fiddly
I wish Switch 2 had a Dual Screen and a Stylus
This optical sensor will be cool for FPS and RTS games on Switch
DS like this will feel like a PC emulator, so I am out...
But I have a working 3DS with a couple DS and 3DS games in my collection
This was my hope the moment I saw that an optical sensor. Second was RTS games like Civ 7 with a mouse OMG
You dont need a mouse to play NDS games when you already have a touch screen
I always thought the switch 1 could have already have DS games, they could have sold a periferal to make the screen vertical and put the joy cons on the sides (3rd party exists already) and then split the screen in two. It already has touch controls
exactly what I thought of when i saw joycons could be used that way, really hope so!
My brain sees a mouse and goes to strategy games. The switch 2 version of civ 7 could be nearly identical to the pc version.
I hope the Switch 2 can be used like the Wii U, so handheld mode and then cast the second screen to the TV.
I mean, my hands are quite large as is, & if a 3rd party company brought out a mouse shaped grip, maybe I’ll get one
