Those guys had me send a resume and application on their guild website where officers would later go and discuss my application on the open forum. I decided a guild was not needed and just pugged myself through the entirety of wotlk. I can´t speak for the xpacs that came after that since i quit the game, but one thing´s for sure. No guild required in wotlk xD.
Back in wotlk/cata I once had an interview like this for a top guild, paid to change servers etc, paid the guild tax, did the professions, jumped through all the hoops, had all the gear, and then never got a raid spot, even though i was supposedly in the list and had the guild rank for it. Later i found out that they never intended to give any applicant a raid spot, they just wanted people to fund them. Ended up changing servers again and getting server firsts with a different guild as the top healer, and actually felt like part of the guild after missing out on a huge chunk of an expansion. Pretty much missed ulduar to twilight and ended up doing arena instead

Because it's predatory and a scam, 99.9% of the time. Every guild I've ever seen with a tax just collects a big pile of gold that only the leader and their IRL friends can access. Besides there's already an in-built tax system. Guilds having tax means they're taxing you extra on top of the tax.

I was in a Counterstrike clan (Crimson Empire) that reminds me of this. It was run like a military unit. With military rankings, medals and corporal punishment. 6 hour practices, 4 nights a week with ranked matches, league and tournament 3 nights a week. It was incredibly stressful but rewarding and fun. I get why people want to be in a clan like this. 😄
