I love making string/strip quilts, I use the off cuts from those and smaller scraps in crumb blocks. (I prefer visual chaos, so I throw everything together.) I also have a few other go to sizes - 2.5 inch squares - they are the center of my courthouse step log cabins. I also like to just sew squares together, or 2.5 x 4.5 rectangles (Magic ratio).
I love the blocks that you're doing your own pattern with. That will be beautiful. I like tiny scraps for ornamental patchwork on clothes or to patch holes even. But my scraps come from other people normally I buy material scraps, I use old pieces of other clothing, used sheets, pillows cases or curtains things like that. I enjoy the recycling. I hate cutting too! I also have heaps of scraps and started cutting them into sizes for a few different quilt designs in my head. I agree it is hard to cut them into specific sizes not knowing what you will do with them. I do love scrap quilts. I also hate following patterns and prefer to wing it. I really enjoyed your video:-)
Yes I’ll definitely be winging it for the next couple projects after this - I don’t think I can cope with another quilt from someone else’s pattern for a while now! Too much like an assembly line! Glad you liked the video!
No - I sew mostly with scraps or other folks scraps so I do loads of different things with them not all paper pieced. I also do a lot of crumb quilting and currently experimenting with a few more techniques.
You don’t ‘have to’ but that is the way most patterns are written. So if you follow the instructions to the letter it usually tells you to cut out everything first and then start piecing…not my idea of fun!! So I prefer to do quilts where I can work block by block!
In the olden days, scrap quilts came from the scrap bag: small pieces left over from the home sewing of regular clothes. Nightgowns, men's shirts, dresses to wear while doing housework, children's clothes were made of printed cottons. Today we BUY quilt fabric and slice it to make the pieces we need. Old-fashioned quilters only cut and sewed one block at a time. When there was a stack of completed blocks those could be joined with sashing and borders. This may be why fat quarters, nickel and dime squares, jelly rolls and cinnamon buns* developed. It's easier to cut from small sections than to wrestle with yardage. * Collections of squares and strips of coordinated fabrics
I think part of why I like working with scraps and remnants so much is a similar thing - I don’t have to cut down lots of yardage to usable pieces. I just prefer bolt ends and scrap bags to jelly rolls and charm packs 😂
While I'm working on one quilt... even almost finished except for binding.... I HAVE to try out the next one. I end up cutting all the new one... except for "the ends of the last rows".... a mere 164 pieces to go. The first one keeps poking at me. The new one keeps poking at me. Sheesh! Good to know I'm not the only one. ))) There are bins of single color crammed with that one color solids and prints all shapes and sizes. IF the one I am working on needs more XXXX I know where to go. Only the BIG pieces that could be a back, go in bins of "backings" full of colored sheets or tablecloths. No closer sorting of those at all.... just BIG for backing. If the right color is not big enough, I add more or blocks or piano keys made on paper. The back gets to be another whole quilt. ))) Garage sale clothes are the most in the bins, discards from others, When others know you quilt, mysterious boxes of cloth appear at your door. ))))). Quilting is absolute joy.
My problem is that I have a lot of differents kinds of fabric. In felt, in lace, leather, wool, etc... and I wonder if I should cut them because I couldn't do patchwork with them... What can I do with that ?
Look up crazy quilts. Folk definitely use lots of different types of materials for quilts. You could do patchwork bags and pouches with different kinds of fabric too.
Thank you for your pattern. I downloaded mine today. Thank you for sharing your scrap storage system.
Thanks so much for watching! Hope you enjoy the pattern!
trimming scraps is my favorite part of the process.
Very good out of the norm quilt video! Also helps with collage quilts
Thanks!

String quilts are always gorgeous. Whatever system helps you sew more is the one to stick with!

Thanks! Glad you like it - hopefully we'll have got you quilting by the time I have the pattern ready 😜

I'm weird - I really like to trim up my scraps, and I have to make myself stop and actually work on some blocks. LOL
Not weird! Lots of folk like to cut their scraps to useable sizes. It’s just not for me that’s all!
Love these ! Do you use paper for all of your scrap quilting ?
No - I sew mostly with scraps or other folks scraps so I do loads of different things with them not all paper pieced. I also do a lot of crumb quilting and currently experimenting with a few more techniques.
Do you have to cut all of the pieces before you can start sewing some blocks? I would lose heart too

I have a system for scraps that can be described as “barely contained chaos” but I hope to one day create a less chaotic scrap situation…
Embrace the chaos until then!
