Laura I just love watching you do what you do no matter what is is! Your sweet voice and kind words and helpful hints just always hit the right mark. Thank you for being you!
It took me a long time to realize that I was just as important than anyone else in the family and to take care of me first! I started out with my scraps done like you do - in pre-cut sizes but, found that it doesn't take long to become overwhelmed by them. Sorting them by color, while useful, would take up far more room than my 1,500 SF house could handle. I've begun asking other quilters on FB is anyone would like some and it's finally becoming more manageable - LOL! Well, that PLUS doing more scrappy blocks...
I love doing this with my leftover fabric also. The remaining little strips that can't be used for sewing I collect into a pillow case, and when that is stuffed full of the leftover non- sewable fabric, I sew the end of the pillow case shut, pop it inside yet another inexpensive pillowcase and use it in a pet bed. It's washable and functional at the same time 🤩
What a fabulous idea, Laura! It can be confusing as to how to save and organize scraps and this really makes sense. My husband who is also a quilter, thinks this a great idea, as well. Get better soon. So grateful there is a you.
Laura, really enjoyed this much easier precut sorting of fabrics not planned for a specific project! I, like many quiltmakers/fabric artists have to touch the fabrics & purchase fabric because...someday I will use it. It takes some discipline...but really doesn't hurt! Thank YOU for the reminder YOU is important, to YOU; taking care of YOU/ME is often the last person we have learned to put in #1 priority. Great tip.
I have been doing that for years, and yes it does make us use them , I store mine on a shelf in shoe boxes, thank you for all your great ideas ,just made made myself a needle box from your tutorial ,keep the ideas coming
I actually was NOW cleaning and straightening my unorganized sewing room when I decided I need to do something with these scraps of material . I just came across your video! Yay!! Thank you channel!
Thanks so much for making it easier for us to manage scraps. I also want to thank you for telling us all to take care. We spend so much of our time taking care of family, pets and the homebound. Sometimes we forget that we matter too!
Thanks for showing your system. Precut sizes really make more sense to have on hand. I have also cut your 2 x 3-1/2 rectangles for the scrappy quilt and found they make cute 6” squares for Kleenex holders too. I keep a stack by my machine and use them for leaders and enders. The 2-1/2” squares will work for that too.
Great idea! I wish I lived close enough to get the crumbs you threw away! I'm sure there'd be other quilters who would gladly take them off your hands!
Thank you for sharing. I guess I'll have to learn how to throw away little scraps at some point before they take over. I know that's what you mean to pass along. Your work is never is vain, just all beautiful.
I use this same method but I'm guilty of keeping those smaller pieces. I've used those to stuff pillows with so I don't feel too badly about keeping them. You've inspired me to make 2.5" squares. I don't usually make those but see the benefit in starting that habit. Thanks for sharing.
I've just started quilting and find that my fabric stash is already growing a bit unruly. Your idea of making everything into precuts after finishing a quilt is wonderful and timely. Hope you feel better soon.
Laura, thanks for your great advice. I have tried the boxes ideas for storage but it just hasn’t worked for me. I’m just left with lots of boxes! Organization by size makes scraps so more usable. It’s throwing out those real small pieces that seem “bad”. Thanks for permission, Laura. Stay well!
Thank you so much, Laura. What a great system to organize and use scraps. I am getting started today! Hope your cold is getting better! Take Care of "You!"
Thank you for the tips Laura. Have ever thought of donating the little scraps. In our area (Eastern Ontario) some quilters donate the tiny scraps to sewers who make dog beds to use as stuffing. Hope you get better soon. 🤗
Thank you for sharing your scrap storage system. I have the drawer system you have and my goal for this year is to cut up my random pieces of fabric. Is there a video that describes the chairs you use for sewing in your sewing room? My chair just is not comfortable and I would really appreciate your advice. Feel better soon!
Every little bit I place in muslin bags, filling it also with scrap batting, cut up old towels, even old clothes, all clean. Make great pet beds I cover with flannel envelope covers. Bed and covering fully washable and dryer friendly.
Thank you. Great tips! Hope you find a place or a person who uses tiny pieces to stuff crafted hearts etc. it ALL help the environment. Looking forward to more videos.
Great ideas! Also, a tip I got was to put a cough drop in hot water and drink that to help your throat. I am getting over a cold like you. Feel better soon!✂️🍵💖
ohmygoodness!!! Laura, I keep many smaller strips for strip piecing--which I love to do--and a small collection of tiny pieces (e.g., 1x1") for small applique projects. Great for adding "eyes" and such where needed.
I happened upon this clip at the perfect time. My sewing room is a mess. I've ordered some shelving and when I begin to organize I am going to refer back to this video. Thank you.
HI Laura, oh I wish I could fly over and pick up your throw-aways !!! they are ideal for crumb quilting to which I am addicted! your throat - you may want to try Provodone iodine here in my country it is called Betadine - you mix half and half with bottled water and at the first sign of a cold or sore throat, with an earbud put some in each nostril and sniff then gargle for 30 seconds with a mouthful and spit out. Part of the FLCCC's highly successful protocol for poor countries during covid. :)
Hello Miss Laura, and welcome to the weekend... I hope today finds you and feeling better, and that your throat has caught up.... Amazing that you unselfshy took time for a video class while your under the weather.... what can I say... you are FABULOUS... Jon
Great idea. I just brought that similar plastic drawer set and was thinking it would work for my scraps. I started processing them as soon as I finish a project to avoid the big pile I had. And I’m already using them. Thank you for the idea. Get well.
I’m that OCD woman that my brain won’t let me move on to my next project until I completely clean and organize my entire sewing room before I move on. This has allowed me to keep all my scraps organized in clear heavy duty plastic bags and all the colors and cuts stay together. I’ve found that by taking the time to do this it will help keep MountmSrapmore totally under control.
Oh I have good intentions, but rarely cut up leftovers. I do have a container of leftover binding strips. They sure come in handy. My plastic stack drawers hold my notions, thread, etc. Great advice on scrap management and self-care! Thank you.
Glad I found you, such a helpful video! Your system for dealing with all the scraps of fabric is brilliant and I will definitely try that with all my scraps. We are in the process of renovating at the moment but the minute I can get into my sewing room it’s game on! My name is Connie and I live in Adelaide,South Australia and we don’t have a lot of quilt shops here so RUclips is a godsend for me. Thank you for sharing your system, its the best one I’ve seen. Have subscribed 💕
Our whole family was sick over Christmas! I’m glad you’re feeling better! I’ve been doing your system for a few years and I do use them so much more! But I love your idea of putting cardboard around your 10” squares! I’m going to have to do that to my pile. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Thank you for this idea. I have never bought precuts but this is a great way to try out some of those patterns I keep seeing for them. Better yet it really tidied up those scaps.
Just been doing the very same - I never had many scraps but they multiplied when I wasn't looking. I decided no more sewing until it was tidied up. I'm still finding my way around what scraps to keep and not sure about using strings but those "crumbs" may have to go. Perhaps into a cushion topping for a stool or a cat bed - now I definitely don't have enough for that yet! LOL!
Love this video. I kind of have a similar process of the precut sizes. I have several Joan Ford’S books on “cut the scraps”. Her books have so many patterns for her precut method and I’ve made many patterns from her books. The one tip from you I’d like to try is to cut them into my desired sizes as soon as I finish a project. I think this will save me the extra step of a bunch of scraps that then need to be cut and one time. Thanks so much.
I had been sorting into colours, but now I just do lights and neutrals, mediums and darks separately. Faster to put away with only a choice of 3 sections.
This is the way I process scraps! I have a tower that holds 6 of the flat, square scrapbook storage bins. I started with several sizes, but now I cut 5", 3" squares and 2 1/2" strips. I use scraps much more effectively now!!!!!
❤❤❤I am in the process of re organization of my scraps, oh I have so many, it is a huge job and will be happy when it is done and I can easily find what I am looking for. I just joined a group “conquering mount scrapmore with Joan and will make a couple versions of the potato chip block. It is really neat. Some of your cutoffs “strings” I couldn’t throw away because I enjoy making string blocks in different sizes. Another good informative video, thank you
Great idea! I hadn't thought of that but it's a fabulous way to get more out of bigger pieces. The rest could go for string quilts or doll clothes or those poufs I've seen recently. Love the organization ideas🤗...need to get a few of those cabinets. Can't wait to see what you make next! 😉🌷🌹🌻💕
Some of the larger pieces (especially flannel) I use for rags. Skinny strips and selvage edges my husband uses for tying up plants in the garden. Use it up, wear it out!
Laura, I hope you are feeling better soon. I had a “cold” 2 weeks ago. I decided to do a home Covid test, because I had some old kits that were expiring. The first test was negative, but 3 days later, I tested again, and was shocked to see it was positive. I actually felt better starting the next day. My only symptoms were a sore throat and a runny nose.
I do all that too, but not 10" squares. Anything bigger than 10x10", I save as is. I find those larger pieces more versatile. I also have "crumb" bins of any pieces less than 2.5", sorted by color. I like to make color-coordinated crumb blocks.
Thank you for sharing your method for storing and sorting your scraps. I have struggled with how to organize them for years. Every quilt I make is donated to hospitals, seniors and people in need so I do try to keep the scraps and use them. I will be adopting your storage tower idea because it makes sense to my brain. Thanks again Laura
Love this video - I was so inspired I’ve spent 2 days organising my scraps into pre-cuts and bias binding. I’m saving the teeny bits for stuffing toys. Thank you so much 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 x

Your system is very organized. I keep my scraps by color since I use AccuQuilt and I don't want to pre-cut and not have the right size piece for my project. My question is what do you do with your tiny scraps? Do you have an easy way to recycle them? I've heard that there is one store that recycles fabric and clothing.
what a wonderful video. I'm off to my sewing room to make this happen as you've shown. Brilliant. I have both of your books love them 💕. hope your mending with that cold. your Florida friend.
Love this system! I have The Container Store mesh drawer system on wheels. I think I’ll convert one unit for scraps. Currently I precut scraps similar to you, but put them in the plastic 12x12 bins available in any big fabric store.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm normally extremely organized, however I haven't been able to figure out how to store my fabric scraps - until now! It never occurred to me to iron them and make precuts out of them. It seems like a rather daunting project, but I know how wonderful it'll feel to get this project done.
I really like this system and will give it a try. I'm glad you said you toss the smaller pieces. I do the same thing, but some people say nasty things about that.
This is actually the best way i've seen so far to manage scraps. Great idea!
Laura I just love watching you do what you do no matter what is is! Your sweet voice and kind words and helpful hints just always hit the right mark. Thank you for being you!
I put the small left over bits in a “pillow case “ for a dog bed.
my wife uses the left overs from trimming to stuff 'cage beds' for animal shelters and has made pet beds for friends
Hi, we use the tiny scraps, thread, batting pieces for filling up a slip cover as a cushion for the rescue animal shelter.
It took me a long time to realize that I was just as important than anyone else in the family and to take care of me first! I started out with my scraps done like you do - in pre-cut sizes but, found that it doesn't take long to become overwhelmed by them. Laura, complete healing to you and you also take good care of self. Thank you for the inspiration of your video!
What a fabulous idea, Laura! It can be confusing as to how to save and organize scraps and this really makes sense. My husband who is also a quilter, thinks this a great idea, as well. Get better soon. So grateful there is a you.
That is a great idea. I love when everything is all tidy and organized. I agree, take care of yourself.

Laura where did you get your office chair? I desperately need a new one but most of them are so big and clunky.
Love your idea for scraps.
I actually was NOW cleaning and straightening my unorganized sewing room when I decided I need to do something with these scraps of material . I just came across your video! Yay!! Thank you channel!
when i get sick it goes right to my ears and my throat, so you have my sympathies! lots of warm liquids and rest
Thanks so much for making it easier for us to manage scraps. I also want to thank you for telling us all to take care. We spend so much of our time taking care of family, pets and the homebound. Sometimes we forget that we matter too!
I just cut a bunch of my scraps into 5" blocks. Amazing how it seems to take up a lot less room!! And in my little sewing room that's a big win!
Feel better soon! Going to repurpose a plastic drawer unit for my scraps! Thanks a bunch.
I just love your idea, but most of all I’m glad your feeling better. Take care of you first and we will all be here when you are back to 100%

I just spent a week cutting my scraps from mask making & sewing them into 5” blocks for a strip quilt.
Great video! I love that you used the word, "controlling." That's definitely what it feels like I'm trying to do rather than "manage."
I would love to see your hexagon project or what you are going to make! Feel better soon!
I love making log cabin quilts. So I always cut 2 and a half inch strips. I color coordinate them or keep them in theme piles.
This is a great idea. Simple ideas are often the best.
I happened upon this clip at the perfect time. My sewing room is a mess. I've ordered some shelving and when I begin to organize I am going to refer back to this video. Thank you.

Great solution for scraps.
And thank you for your good advise on take care of you. Because there is only one as you say❤️
Thanks for this video. I'll soon be setting some time aside to get my scraps in order and this seems like a great approach.
Thank you for the tips for the scraps. I wish you all the best with your health. I enjoy all of your tutorials. Hope you go on with them. 🤗
Love your cutting and drawer arrangement system ! Will give this a try and hope to make my first scrap quilt.
Thanks & Take Good Care of You! 💕
You are a swet Ladie . Thankyou for teaching us so many good things. GBY TX/PR
Sew very organized. I need to do this and then let the tiny pieces go.
I really like the idea of putting that board on both sides of your stacks of 10 inch squares! I hate pressing the same fabric multiple times! Thanks!
Perfect for ME! Thanks for the idea!
Get better soon 🤧🤒😷. Thank you for the video 😊👍
Great system! I kept getting hung up on how to sort the colors, but I like just sorting the white, christmas, and kid themes.
I had been sorting into colours, but now I just do lights and neutrals, mediums and darks separately. Faster to put away with only a choice of 3 sections.
I would love to see what you do with your Hexies.
I have the same one; it's bursting at the seams. I really need to do some projects. 🪡
This is the way I process scraps! I have a tower that holds 6 of the flat, square scrapbook storage bins. I started with several sizes, but now I cut 5", 3" squares and 2 1/2" strips. I use scraps much more effectively now!!!!!

Hi Laura. Hope you feel better soon.
I’ve been waiting for another video 🤗 I hope you’re feeling better soon. Take care.

Thank you for your suggestions. I immediately went and did my cutting and it was fun.
Great idea! I hadn't thought of that but it's a fabulous way to get more out of bigger pieces. The rest could go for string quilts or doll clothes or those poufs I've seen recently. Love the organization ideas🤗...need to get a few of those cabinets. Can't wait to see what you make next! 😉🌷🌹🌻💕
Great idea. Hope you feel better!
Some of the larger pieces (especially flannel) I use for rags. Skinny strips and selvage edges my husband uses for tying up plants in the garden. Use it up, wear it out!
Great idea, started on my stash today. Love your videos 😬

Donate to someone for crumb quilts or use as stuffing just don't put in landfill cloth takes longer to decompose than you would think
Thank you for sharing your method for storing and sorting your scraps. I have struggled with how to organize them for years. Every quilt I make is donated to hospitals, seniors and people in need so I do try to keep the scraps and use them. I will be adopting your storage tower idea because it makes sense to my brain. Love this video - I was so inspired I’ve spent 2 days organising my scraps into pre-cuts and bias binding. I’m saving the teeny bits for stuffing toys. Thank you so much 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 x
What a great idea! Especially since precuts are pretty pricey. Thanks
A wonderful idea! Thanks
I like to do English paper piecing too
I make a lot of T-shirt quilts - I used to hang onto the leftovers as it didn't seem right to throw them away. Now our community has "green bins"- I can recycle all my scraps!
I have been working on doing this with my scraps…I have been working on it for a few months…almost done!
What a clever idea! I will definitely keep that in mind. Also I hope you feel better.
Any scrap fabrics that you're not using & are going to throw out, why not start making pet beds for rescue & humane societies.
That’s what I do, I keep all my tiny pieces until they pile up and make dog beds for my local dog shelter. Unfortunately, it takes months for me to have enough scraps to make another bed.
Also batting scraps cut up go in the dog beds. I cut scraps into 2.5, 5 or 10 inch squares at end of each project. My Accuquilt Go is SO helpful!
I have done that for a couple years now!
I donate all of my scraps to my local guild where a couple of ladies make pet beds for the humane society.
Has anyone posted a video on how to make a pet bed with scraps please?
Great organization. Great advice.
Do you add a half inch for the sewing of quarter inch seams
what a wonderful video.
Take care of yourself, and thank you for the great advice on scrap organization.
Hey Laura have you made a 12- patch 16-inch square block. If so, will you go over it with a tutorial. Thanks
Hope you are feeling better! You had great tips for scrap control!!
I really like this system and will give it a try. I'm glad you said you toss the smaller pieces. I do the same thing, but some people say nasty things about that.
What a great idea to pre cut them! Thank you
