The thing with Farcry 2 that most people bounce off of is that it subverts the way these types of games are traditionally played. If you play it like a traditional action game and drive to your objective at a breakneck pace on the main roads, then systematically clear out every outpost for loot and rewards, you are going to have a bad time. This isn't GTA, this is a realistic survival game. There is no reward for killing. Let that sink in... There is no reward for killing. Clearing out a camp may earn you some ammo and a few medpacks, but you can't hold much ammo or syringes, thus you are just replenishing the ammo and health you spent to kill the enemies that are simply going to respawn anyway. On top of that the weapons they drop are too damaged to be worth using outside of a pinch. So it is so much better to just avoid the fights you aren't hired to do. There is no reward for killing. Realizing this changed everything and the game just clicked for me. It went from being a frustrating experience to an unforgettable one. This isn't a game about driving a truck into an enemy camp and then gunning down hoards of enemies, nor is it a game about sneaking through a camp systematically stabbing everyone in the back. This is a game about navigating dense jungle to avoid main roads. It's about trudging through river banks to avoid patrols. Puttering slowly down swampy waterways hoping the militia manning a machinegun nest near that bridge don't notice you. This game is about off-roading through a muddy jungle to reach an objective without risking getting shot. Eventually you stop playing the game like a game. You start to think like you are there. You engage the enemy on your terms. You learn to tread where no NPC dare tread. You learn to live in the jungles and deserts, leaving no man's land only to hit the enemy hard, sniping, using explosives, setting fires, planning killzones. You strike hard and fast, complete your objective and disappear back into the jungle, back to the trails and swamps, riverbanks and fields. You are alone in a hostile environment where everyone wants to kill you. Act like it.
Yes! I couldn't have said it any better. It's not just an open-world FPS. It's just as much about how you traverse that open world and how you use Stealth to your advantage.
Well said this game is crafted a lot better than some give it credit for, it is a beast and aims for realism over all else. I can't stand the far cry4/5 bitch boys who say fc2 is shit because it doesn't have fast travel or some other wank device to speed things up for them so they can get to their shooty shoot fix faster.
Well, I played this game 10 years ago. It was pretty much gun jammed, vehicles overheated, and driving is no picnic if you want travel from point A to B... Which was good. 👍 In my opinion, it was overall good, except software bugs. Edit: Medicine for Malaria was..😎👍 In my opinion.
Bro!!! The second time, and following year of watching this, Winner! You brought me back in time foe reaL, I'm gonna buy the game again. Actually, I gave the away the game with a handful of other games to another a kid in the hospital with me at the time. He had the system and only one game. Never played it again, so this was an Awesome stroll down memory lane. Thanks, man.🎉
Literally just had the thought of "man its been a hot minute since Ive seen a screenslayer video" and you uploaded this 18 minutes ago. Awesome. Now to actually watch.
I remember playing this for the first time back in January of 2019 when it was free on Games with Gold. The constant NPC attacks while traveling across the map are SO ANNOYING lmao
For what it's worth the real story is pretty schizophrenic, the Jackal is the protagonist from the first game, he became an arms dealer after the events of the first game. The Jackal at some point grew a sick sense of morality and decided to sell guns and arms to both sides of the conflict causing a stalemate and saving civilian lifes due to both sides not fighting each other and just stockpiling. You the player are a CIA asset sent to kill the Jackel, you fail and are burnt and have no way home. So you work as a generic merc for both sides. Both sides of this civil war are retarded and fight effectively for the same thing. At some point the stalemate breaks and war returns, a result of the player killing so many important people, the Jackal grows bored of all this and sets the cards up to get all the mercs killed so this can't happen again. In the meanwhile he sets up you thr player to help him (you are supposed to be sympathetic to him for some reason) only way to save the civilian population for good is to kill all the mercs and faction leaders. In the meanwhile the chaos plays out so the Jackal and You can create an evacuation path. This is why you die at the end in both, the Jackal and the Player both agree its their fault all this suffering happened. This story is way too hard to follow
The Jackel in this game is not Jack Carver from Far Cry 1. That was confirmed a long time ago. This game is a mercenary simulation. Reasons don't matter. Life doesn't matter. Just stones. To say that this game has a story is redundant.
@@neobrutalist5233 he is, gave devs confirmed it this year for some reason. Clint Hocking, one of the developers in an interview said so last year, even in the game files his character is "jackcarver"
The game doesn't help you at all to figure out the story, to be more realistic. You are stuck in this shithole african civil war, which nobody could understand even in real life. If you want more lore though, you can read Reuben's blog.
Honestly the story was really easy to follow. The missions you do aren't supposed to have any significance outside of just continuing the cycle of conflict in Africa. The story intentionally makes this about 90% of the missions you do to make you feel that the work you do is pointless dirty work, and that you are no better than the Jackal. The game being inspired by the Heart of Darkness, brings up topics of morality and if there really is any "good" way to kill a man, and that every man is capable of becoming a monster in the right circumstances. The ending of Far cry 2 is plain and simple... Break the cycle and kill yourself, because there is no coming back from what the player and the Jackal have done in the past because they became the monster they once sworn to not become.
Love it. One of my favourite games by one of my favourite RUclipsrs. You should do prison of war. It's a game I grew up playing but haven't seen anyone doing a let's play on
I’ve honestly never felt any kind of way about killing dudes in games. But FarCry 2 was different. I had a buddy mission to redirect a supply plane to a local airstrip for theft. I had to force a local faction official to place a phone call to do so, before killing him. After I took my machete off his neck, he placed said call, raised his hands in the air, and simply asked, “what happens now?” I knew full damn well. Game went out of its way to make me feel as morally reprehensible as possible.
FC2 had a amazing multi-player map maker on 360! I built a TDM map that my friends would play for hours. Looked like a African bazaar with churches and a way to get out of the map on both sides for each teams snipers. I didn't play the single player almost at all but the online MP was legit!
@13:22 Ah I see what went wrong there. Ya used paint. There's two ammo types for the mortar. For some reason it starts ya with paint. Ya have to switch to the actual explosive rounds
People seem to forget that this game had one of the best multiplayer systems. Even a map builder that worked on console and custom lobbies. The gunplay was awesome and well balanced too with insane landscapes.
I gave up on this game once I hit the halfway point, but even so it never fully left my mind- the moment to moment atmosphere of the environment in some ways has never been topped. If they gave the respawning outposts a rest for just one second and allowed weapon repairing, it could have been a masterpiece. Also why no Blood Diamond memes? Perfect opportunity right here :P
Holy shit, I'm stoked beyond belief. Far Cry 2? Man... Also, most performance issues with the game are related to the FPS. I highly recommend G.O.R.E (Glam's Overly Realistic Edits) realism mod.
He could take out every single funny movie clip or TV clip he uses and his videos would still be as funny as fk. It's him that's funny not his clips. I know you didn't say the clips are funny. I'm just saying.
I booted this game up a couple weeks ago, did NOT run into the same animation bugs you did lol. But yeah, thinking back I was always a "gameplay over story" kinda game.
It's more message over story. You enter trying to stop the jackal because his actions have killed hundreds of Africans. Then you go fighting both sides of a war you don't care about, for blood diamonds, like you are the hero. The land would have been better if you never came and let the jackal continue. The game attacks blind interventionism.
Honestly this game was the first and I think only game I played about just how messed up sub saharan africa can be. A war waged by sadistic madmen backed by foreign powers with civilians caught in the middle. The land so torn, buildings rusted, dilapidated infrastructure that only has value as a backdrop for warcrimes.
hey i just wanted to point out that your cadence and tone in this video sounds like an episode of survivorman with les stroud narrating the beginning cool vid
Yea, this game WAS and absolute nightmare. I'm having flashbacks of this god damn game, of playing for 2 hours only to be killed and rage quit, to very quickly realize I didn't fucking save the 10% of story I spent hours on and have to start all over again. FUCK!!!
2:15 That's a framerate related bug, because it was cool to bind your physics to your framerates for a while, and it still is for some stupid companies.

Honestly preferred the tone of far cry 2 to any of the newer ones, 3 had a fun tone but 4 onwards choose being obnoxious to be their thing
If we could get the tone of FC2 with the polish and attention to story of FC3/4, that'd be such a fantastic game.
After the third game they just copy pasted it every time with a slightly different plot
I have 5, and it's ok.. but they are trying way too hard on the personalities. Lost interest around 30% completion
@@scaleworksRCfeel like that was the point, they wanted the game to be over-the-top, obnoxious, and satirical.
@@capitcha That makes sense
"Literally the slightest sound of a car gives me anxiety now" is exactly how I feel when I leave the bar area in the game.
Far cry 2 doesn't have a story it has a message.
Exactly
It also has room for rolplaying, which i did personally
Far Cry 2 IMO had the best tone, atmosphere, and constant state of dread. The only Far Cry game that tried to replicate it was Far Cry 5
Don't mind the weird moving bodies and head. just lock the framerate to 60 fps. totally should do it.
I always remember this game being a fever dream with a very loose story
