What a pleasant painting done in a short amount of time! It proves that really stressing over the process shows in the final product. You've expressed joy on a canvas imo.
Thank you Malcolm for an excellent demo! Trees have always seemed so complicated for me as well as the color green, but you really simplify the complex. I love how you show us the reference pic simultaneously with your canvas and color palette and even explain how to work the brush for those tree trunks to keep it all loose. I am so happy to have stumbled upon you and am now a subscriber. You are both a great artist and a fantastic teacher, too!
Love how the blue tree shadows echoe the bluish/purplish backlit foliage, that really "makes" the painting, that going back and forth between these 2 spots. Thanks for this demo !
Through the years I Offen wondered how the impressionists painted?? I am so glad came cross this demo. You make the painting process SO MUCH more enjoyable!! Thank you.
Fantastic, Malcolm! Thank you so much for demonstrating how I to paint this reference photo. More than ever, I would love to walk on that pathway! And isn't that what a painting should inspire??? Also, I never thought of looking at the masters for a specific situation. That is great advice. I'm going to tackle this soon, which will probably take me hours, and yet once again, you made it look so easy. I greatly appreciate this video.
Claude Monet was so fond of my great great uncle's oak trees that were painted at Fontainebleau, he made copies of them as well as named the paintings after him. They are called the Bodmer Oak. My uncle's name was Carl Bodmer. His journey with German Prince Maximilian in America is similar to that of Louis and Clark, finished less than 20 years after theirs. He exhibited paintings at the solon in Paris in 1850 and has amazing records of original American landscape and natives in artwork. Not only are we relatives, but have experience in the same countries, cities and are both artists. It must run in the family. 😂
Genius painting! I love it. Thankyou for your art and your instruction. Love the thick bold paint but it looks just like the oicture- better than the oicture!
Thank you for this wonderful example of an impressionist method method. By the way, I bought two of your books and am enjoying them very much. Carole - Florida
A masterly application of broken colour Malcolm. Thanks for your demonstration learned alot about the impressionist approach. You have an amazing command of colour & of teaching too.
Although it is not my "style" (as if I have any), I absolutely love your paintings and videos...... One day I might be able to let go of my desire to reach "full realism" ....
Yes, I did, but that is often because I get into the flow of things and forget to change brushes. However, I do wipe the brush every few strokes with tissue, and this keeps new paint clean.
I love those shades of green so natural and alive at the same time, and those brushstrokes are really very impressive, thank you very much for sharing your process, it is superb
I'm subscribed to your son's channel and I'm following his writing advise. He recommended this channel. So nice to see that father is also a very creative and humble person. Such a pleasure to watch. Much love!
As usual, you are an outstanding teacher and artist...wow! This video is just what I needed, as my work is oriented towards an impressionistic style. Benn diong a lot of painting for commissions and the scope of those are impressionistic, with a few being very detailed in structure....this makes going 100% going impressionist somewhat difficult. Best to you Malcolm.
Just found this instruction video today. Glad I did. I really liked the explanation of the color choices, scene manipulation and finished product. This is what I was looking for. Thank you.
-You make it look so easy, ha! I am loving working my way through your PWI- online course. These small studies are so very helpful indeed. i'd be very happy to be able to paint - one of your block-ins. slowly but surely, I'm getting there, ther's no going back now- i have the painting bug x
Very cool, uncomplicated and nice study Strong, intense colors ... sometimes like stained glass I like the twirling of the trees Fresh & free like a bird in spring. Inspiring 😎
Loved it. I was wondering how you would deal with the right hand corner... I would have messed that up by making a big (and probably too dark ) triangular shape, but you gave that area light and air as a choice.... It was wonderful to see your thinking process.
You make it all look so easy, love your tuition and hope one day to be able to create something I am truly happy with but meantime I am enjoying the learning process.
Wonderful demo of how to tackle a subject that would have most of us scratching our head in puzzlement. You have an amazing talent , thank you for your generosity in sharing your brilliance with us.
What a brilliant video, and really helpful, thank you! It's something that I really struggle with too. My big problem I find is painting areas of fields of grass or moorland where it gets close and in the foreground. I don't want it a big boring flat green, I don't want to paint individual blades of grass, and I still want to create a sense of depth, and trying to manage all those things totally baffles me.
What a pleasant painting done in a short amount of time! It proves that really stressing over the process shows in the final product.

Thank you. It is a joyful experience.
I think you’re an incredibly talented painter and an even better teacher. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Thanks so much 😊
I can’t tell you how much this has helped me with a painting I’m currently struggling with! Now I’m excited instead of defeated, thank you so much!!
Lovely to hear that, thank you.

That is a good point, thank you.
You're as good as the impressionists. What beautiful vibrant life and motion. Thanks for your help
Wow, thank you!
I enjoyed revisiting this scene, I always learn something new as I progress along my path.
Good to hear that, thank you

I am itching to try this! I have several of the old books, too. Thank you!

Very instructive! And beautiful study! I am inspired to give it a try. Thanks!
It's amazing how many diverse colours I miss seeing until it's pointed out. I will start looking for those blues and purples!

Thank you, yes I try that sometimes, but always come back to this style. We all have our favourite style I guess.
you sound just like me!! i am stuck with this idea of photorealism that I must escape from!!!!
💯😁
This is so fantastic, Malcolm, thank you. Did you use one single brush for the whole thing?? Makes it look a little Van-Gogh-y, haha. Really great!
Yes, I did, but that is often because I get into the flow of things and forget to change brushes. However, I do wipe the brush every few strokes with tissue, and this keeps new paint clean.
